SIMON GAVINA
PORTFOLIO_2015
During the first years after graduation I had the honor to meet Dino Gavina, considered one of the father of Italian Design.
He wanted me to design for Simon Gavina where I had the chance to make beds and sofas for one of the craziest Italian design company and we ate a lot of terrible onion soup together.
INTERACTIVE AND SCIENTIFIC EXHIBITIONS
From the ’90 I have always been involved in the designing and development of interactive and hands-on scientific exhibitions, working for Museums, Foundations and Private Companies and being one of the first to bring this approach to Italy. Like the itinerant exhibition Science or Magic? which is a tale of illusions and magic perception. Mathland delas with puzzles and games, and then an exhibition on Knots, on Mathematical Games. The Marconi Museum in Villa Griffone, Guglielmo Marconi’s house that hosts a series of accurate reconstructions of scientific equipment placed in differente “islands” dedicated to some milestones ranging from the History of Electricity, precursors of the history of Radio, to maritime applications of Marconi’s invention. The Children Museum at Palazzo Vecchio in Florence. The Pediathric Unit in Thiene where I brought animals in an Hospital. During Bergamo Scienza children and Adults could play with the funny scientific experiments of Phineas and Ferb, the two cartoon characters of Disney Channel. In Bologna the big exhibiton for the centenary of the Nobel Prize to Guglielmo Marconi, the father of radio communications. Reconstructiuons of the Marconi Company, a huge sculpture, metaphor of the transatlantic leap, and the Tree of Communications with Hertz and Maxwell as roots, Wireless Telegraphy as trunk and many monitors as its fruits: from mobile phone to radar, from Wii remote control to television.

Sometimes Autoproduction is the best way! In 2009 I founded Mobili in Cartone (Cardboard Furniture). Cardboard Furniture is a perfect solution for low-cost and low-impact fairs, exhibitions, shops and showrooms. Triple cardboard is a very light material, easy to transport and assemble, ecological because completely recyclable.
Today, after 3 years of activity, Mobili in Cartone is now one of the only Italian industrial production companies of entirely recycled and recyclable furniture and we are building a branch in China.
I designed all the 19 products of the catalog, today the company is expanding its portfolio with products designed by other designers.

In 2013 I founded Ciclipede. Ciclipede is a startup company that will produce the first Smart & Social bike on the market. The bicycle is designed to be fold and fit in the car trunk, carried on public transport or stored at home. Thanks to their Gps and 3g functionality Ciclipede bicycles can go social and can be geotagged everywhere like a smartphone. With the dedicated web app the owners of Ciclipede can find other owners in the neighborhood, keep track of their routes or create online events or competitions.

I designed Urban furnishing and products for many italian Urban design companies, one of them is Modo. The collaboration has begun in 1997 and I designed for them more than 70 products that are today the core business of the company.
MODO
For the Milano Design Week 2011 I was called with 6 internationally renowned designers (Antonio Citterio, Gabriele Pezzini, Matali Crasset, Stefano Giovannoni, Tobia Repossi, James Irvine) to interpret the Children Bill of Rights. I designed a skill game called Do Not Loose the Thread. Suitable for children with disabilities, the game represents the right to “use hands”. It is now in Modo’s catalog and fills the warehouse as Arcas, a bicycle rack.

Among the devices of the Science Park, the Rotating Discs, with their Hypnotic illusions, a Spinner to pirouette as an ice - skater, and the Tree of Vision that shows how man has implemented his sight: a microscope to see infinitely small, a telescope for the infinitely far an a periscope to overcome obstacles. The Science Park was nominated for Compasso d’Oro in 2004.

From the collaboration with Fima came the idea to create a metal joint to avoid the massive use of welding in outdoor playgrounds, and to simplify assembly, transport and maintenance. It allows infinite possibilities of modular aggregation and now…. they are happy.

One of my best client was Carlsberg, but I never seen a beer can with them, just wine bottles for their distribution channel in hotels and restaurants.
For some years I’ve been designing the packs, the image and the bottles for Cliven, a manufacturer of cosmetics, make-ups and items for personal hygiene. They have been one of the leading Italian chemical companies since 1958.
