American Spirit Federal Credit Union has been known for its ability to weather economic storms. Herefore, wewere prepared to adapt to the tough Knancial climate over these last few years, while still yielding strong Knancial results.Hroughout the economic downturn, American Spirit has stayed strong Knancially and has developed products andservices to Kt the changing needs of our members.

A well-capitalized credit union, as deKned by NCUA (our regulator) is one whose net worth ratio is equal to, or above,7 percent. Our net worth/net income ratio was 14.65% for 2013, which renders American Spirit a strong, stable Knancialinstitution. We can also be proud that we once again received a Four-Star (“Excellent”) rating from Bauer Financial.

As a result of the conKdence you place in American Spirit FCU every day, 2013 proved to be one of the mostsuccessful years for Knancial performance. We know that you have options when it comes to choosing a Knancialinstitution, which is why we make it our goal to listen intently to your wants, wishes and desires. Here at AmericanSpirit, we work tirelessly to improve upon our products, processes and services to ensure the best member experiencefor you.

Our annual report contains highlights of American Spirit’s Knancial performance, loan, deposit and membershipgrowth. It will give you conKdence that your money is being taken care of. American Spirit remains one of the strongestcredit unions in the country. But it is more than just the numbers. American Spirit’s value to the membership is measuredby how many people were better oI or made better Knancial decisions because of their credit union. Sure, we now servemore than 12,000 members, but what is more important is how much these folks saved, thanks to American Spirit FCU.

One of the most rewarding accomplishments in 2013 was the opening of American Spirit’s Krst student branchin the Gauber-Cobbs Middle School in Newark, which is run by students with the help of credit union staI. It isencouraging to see our young people working with such commitment in providing quality service to their fellowstudents and their teachers.

American Spirit Federal Credit Union believes in giving back to our members and the communities we serve. We recognize that when our members, SEG groups and the credit union all work together, we can truly make a diIerence. It is our community spirit which enables us to do what we do. We were approved by NCUA to serve the underservedarea of Middletown and we have expanded our eIorts to reach the underserved areas of Newark and Dover.

American Spirit’s goal is “To be the best Knancial institution our members have ever experienced and the bestplace our employees have ever worked.” His year promises exciting developments for members, such as upgradeof our home banking system. His upgrade will improve security, reliability and provide programs to help memberssave better, borrower smarter and learn more. For employees we intend to continue oIering good jobs with excellentbeneKts and the kind of job security folks can count on to support themselves and their families. He Board ofDirectors and the Supervisory committee is made up of credit union members who remain committed to makinga diIerence. We thank them for their time, energy and service.

We are looking forward to an improving economy and helping our membership improve their personal Knances.American Spirit’s membership reached over 12,000 in 2013 and grew in assets to $64 million. His growth is encouraging, knowing that our community recognizes the credit union diIerences and the extraordinary diIerence of AmericanSpirit FCU. On behalf of the Board of Directors, the credit union’s management team, staI and volunteers, it is ourprivilege to present American Spirit’s 2013 annual Report. Hank you for your support and we look forward to servingyou in the years to come.

My first sign of a change in him was one summer afternoonhe was reading on the couch and never once asked,‘When canI stop? How many pages do I have to read?’ In fact, he read for

an hour and a half without any interruption, somethinghe has never done in thirteen years.

Homework Tips!Put spelling words or vocabularywords in a word search usingwww.puzzle-maker.com.Then giveyour kids clues as to where to findthem, such as “It starts in the upperleft and runs right.”This will helpthem learn the words, and will buildauditory and visual processingskills. If you have them typethe words into the puzzle-makerlist, it’ll help them learn the wordsand practice keyboarding.

When practicing spelling wordsor reading aloud have your childbreak up the word by sound. If theword is “school”your child wouldsay /s/ /k/ /oo/ /l/ or if the wordis “reindeer”your child would say/r/ /ae/ /n/ /d/ /ee/ /r/. This willhelp your child build strongerphonemic awareness skills, which are essential for reading.
