πDATE OF BIRTH : May.29 1991EMAIL : [email protected] : 86 - 15810442570ADDRESS : Art Design Institute, Beijing University of Technology, No.8, East Huixin Street, Chaoyang District, Beijing, P.R. ChinaPOSTCODE : 075000CURRENT DEGREE : Bachelor of Arts, Beijing University of Technology

My undergraduate major is Art and Design and the major research direction is Display Design. But through the undergraduate studies, I found that I like Visual Communication Design very much. So I want to pursue a master degree of Visual Communication. Due that my undergraduate major is Display Design, the portfolio contains some works of Exhibition Design which I think are related to the Visual Communication. Since I believe that art is interlinked, there must have something in common among these design majors. Meanwhile, it is a truth that Display Design itself belongs to the field of Visual Communication Design. So I believe that I have capacity to learn this major well. This portfolio may not be very perfect and professional, but I would try my best to present myself. I hope that I could get the opportunity to finish my postgraduate courses and continue to study major I loved in your university which I have desired for a long time.

This is a packaging design. It was shortlisted for the Red Dot Design Award in 2014. It was my first

time to participate in international design competition. This is definitely a valuable

experience. Although I didn’t get award, the knowledge and skill I learned would help me a lot

in my study.

I have many interests, and I am willing to participate in various activities.

It has five parts, including pattern, layout, VI, advertisment, and illustration. I arrange them from basis to complex. I think this arrangement can exhibit my progress in the study, idea, feeling and skill. Meanwhile this part is also the main part in the whole portfolio.

This section includes two contents, the colour mood and the practice of hue. From the practice I realized how colour affect individuals’ life. Meanwhile, I

believed that my feeling and skills of colour application would be improved.

This part required us to use color composition to represent two different moods. I used cold color, purple and blue to show cool and calm, while used the bright light color and warm color to represent happy. For the composition, to be specific, I used the group of the sharp shape and the group of the smooth shape respectively.

Quentin Tarantino was an important young director in the American independent films revolution in the 1990s.He is

famous for his unique personality and art films. He is one of my favorite directors, and his masterpiece "Pulp Fiction" is also my

favorite movie. His is good at nonlinear storytelling, withmemorable dialogues and bloody scenes. He is good at leading the audiences into the mood by mobilizing the

atmosphere with the method of editing music, photography and so on. Although the action scene in the movie is bloody,

due to the extremely gorgeous frame, it does not feel terror but let the audiences feel very cool, even a bit funny.

He often break up the story, then restructure it. The movie with the tempo-spatial crisscross structure, but it is not contradictory

at all. I tried to use this way to restructure the object, and to create a new space.

inspiration and sketch sculpture

The purpose of this work is to try to change the intrinsic property of the material itself, and to explore the new possibilities. So I chose to use hard wire

which has no life to represent animals, overcoming hardness with softness, couple rigid with soft. On the one hand, I needed to twist wire bit by bit,

breaking the hard and cold property of it, and made it seem like animal’s fur. On the other hand, I needed to ensure the solid of it. The whole process took

2 weeks, and 30 meters wire were exhausted.

Page 13: Portfolio of Shi Chaoran

This section is about the exploration and the research of the layout form. It must be a basic skill of graphic design. I had ten different attempts for the layout form, to be specific, they are balance, center, the force field, contrast, symmetry, direction, blank, unity, rhythm and

point-line-plane respectively. Maybe there are other possibilities.

The logo graphic is composed of "leaf" and "1". The inspiration originates from the name "one leaf". The "1" in the graphic is the vein of the leaf. It reflects the theme of "one leaf” vividly. The main color of the logo is green, green is the symbol of youth and vigor, which can reflect the essence of pure nature of this product better. The combination of green and red is bright and contrasts clearly. I think the logo would make people feel happy.

NO.2TRADITIONAL CULTURE RESERCHAND DESIGN传统文化研究与设计 —以布老虎和京剧脸谱为例

This design is about the revival of the traditional culture. In the face of the westernization of the China society and the gradually loss of the traditional culture. I hope to revive traditional culture through our design. Not only to restore the Chinese love for it, but also promote it to the world. I hope that Chinese culture could also have influence in the world someday. Of course it is difficult to achieve this aim just by our these negligible creativities and actions. So I hope that our actions can inspire and arouse more designers who can attach importance to it, and take action. In this section, I chose the Cloth Tiger and Peking Opera Facial Makeup as an example to design. To be honest, through these two design, I have a deeper understanding of Chinese traditional culture, especially of cloth tiger and Peking Opera.

Cloth tiger is a traditional folk toy in China. It is also a kind of mascot which has symbolic significance. Cloth tiger is close related to China Dragon Boat Festival. However with the development of era and the

transformation of human ideas, more and more traditional toys which are similar to cloth tiger have been gradually replaced by high-tech

new modern toys. Meanwhile more and more traditional handicrafts are also under the loss. So I would like to take a way which is beloved, and

be integrated with the modern life, meanwhile take a way of combination of Chinese and western culture to design and decorate. I

hope to draw the attention of the general publics to protect Chinese precious traditional culture and traditional handicrafts.

Final Scheme

As the result of the discussion. The picture of final solution showed that a little girl is blowing bubbles in the snow in the moonlight. The Cloth tigers were settled in the bubbles. The scene just like a dream.

The Production Process

We built a snow scene by using toilet-paper to wrap around the frame of the window, then covered it with cotton. At the same time we put the cloth tiger into the bubbles. Then we adjusted the floating position of the bubbles well-proportioned.

We first made a sky color backboard with the blue and KT boards. Then we made two after snowing branches with toilet-paper and extra KT boards. At the same time, in order to build the feeling of bubbles floating in the air, we installed a wire mesh at the top. Then we used fishing line to lift the bubbles hanging in the air.

step 2

Page 37: Portfolio of Shi Chaoran

We put the white branches into the window, and fixed them with fishing line.

We placed the girl and the clouds into the frame, and adjusted the position.

I think in the whole process, the effect of lighting is the most important part. We installed LED spot lights, and adjusted the position of the lightingconstantly. After adjustment, according to the needs, we fixed a LED SMD in the top, and covered it with cotton, just like night sky.

In this part of the store design,I drew on the experience of marketing and design method from some successful foreign chain brand. After the work, I obtained many precious experience in the

way of scheme, marketing, design method and skills.

Investigate and Analyze

Lok Tong from Japan

I finally drew on the experience from the growth pattern of the Lok Tong. Its production is Lucky The Cat Family. It is a symbol that represents the traditional culture. The company produced many creative cultural products, and gave them a lot of good moral. The style of store is Japanese, and the decoration is very well. They promoted the culture very successful through these ways, and made it famous in the world.

By drawing on the experience of the Lok Tong. The cloth tiger was analyzed, positioned and schemed.

vintage Chinese elements

The theme of my store is "memories". I combined vintage elements with Chinese elements, because I would like to arouse customer’s memories about cloth tiger.

The main color of the store is red. I decorated the store with the Chinese old goods, such as uneven brick wall, wooden cabinets, old suitcases, old appliances and so on.

Hand-Drawn Renderings

The water table was made of a variety of Chinese folk old appliances and items. I painted them with the light color which made them looks like both nostalgic and fashion.

As the quintessence of the Chinese culture, Beijing Opera is an indispensable part of the Chinese traditional culture.

However, due to the development of the era and the influence of cultural diversity, mainstream culture of today's

society has been occupied by catchy pop songs. Beijing Opera just become the hobby of the older generation. In

order to let more people, especially young people like the Beijing Opera, and be willing to understand the charm of it

actively. In order to promote this traditional culture to the world, we chose a way that combined it with street fashion

brand. We made a printing on the surface of shoes, because I believed that fashion was no border. I hope that I

could use this method to promote Beijing Opera anytime and anywhere.

The roles of Peking Opera are divided very meticulously. It was divided into 10 kinds of roles in the beginning. Later it was incorporated into 4 roles, they were male character, female character, painted face character, middle-aged male character and clown. According to the different temperament types and characters, roles have their fixed facial masks and costumes. The stage movement of various roles also has different standards.

Since almost every Beijing Opera facial mask corresponds to a historical figure, so they also correspond to different individuality too. The makeups with different color can represent different personality characters.

It is a course in my senior year. It is also a tradition of our major. I took part in the design and production process of two devices. This part includes two contents: "peeping" and "we".Participating in this design and production process of the two devices, my best harvest is that I have more understanding for the materials. Futher more I guess I mastered the processing method and craft of the materials which were applied in the production process.

Project and Draft

Every one of us came up with 20 sets of the solution. This section is about my plan and some drafts. Some of these schemes were about public benefits, such as the space of blind experience. Some called on to protect the environments, such as roof nets. Some concerned about thepublic safety, such as QR code. Some expressed the dream like paper planes, and so on. This was a teamwork project. Finally we chose two of these schemes to make, they were "Peeping" and "Face Model".

Page 50: Portfolio of Shi Chaoran

We used the resistance wire to cut every plastic foam along the edge of the cross-section which were sticked on the plastic foams. Then we assembled them together.

Everyone has their own secrets which may inspire intense curiosity of some of the people in the society and may give rise to some criminals. The device of "peeping"

would like to express one of the social phenomenon that some people take photos forwomen's skirts in the public. In this device, when a person walks through under the legs with strong curiosity, they will look up, and see their expression at the moment with the mirror on the top. We hope that people can see their own heart through a mirror, and

do self-examination.

In order to make it more solid, we connected it together with a long steel pipe. And then weadjusted the position, ratio, thickness and so on, in order to insure it more vivid.

We packaged the leg with latex and grey fabric. Then putty was brushed on the surface. As a consequence, the leg was more solid.

After the putty drying, we burnished it. Then we used a nail gun to beat the flesh-colored stockings on the model. It seemed like the legs own the skin.
