This project was based with in the city of Preston , this was a master planning concept, the area given was Church street , this is the oldest part of Pres-ton looking at the history around the site we were shown that Preston was a wealthy town/city.

This idea is to create an independent fashion academy sponsored by the high street for the high street with the help of the Mary street Porta funding this academy would teach how to create and sell/advertise fashion, the top students from all courses will be put up into a pop up boutique’s and be ready to launch for the event of Preston Fashion week this would increase sales open to all and using the resources that are already there be a fantastic back drop for the city.

Development The concept of designing just a square box which is 30m high needs to have some interesting quality’s to it, the red brick is to bring the connection to the city. The gardens a focal point for the people of the city to use. The Fashion academy, a way to make the city develop its self into a true viable post indus-trial city.

PRESTONFASHION WEEK

Preston Fashion Shows

Holding the fashion shows within the miller arcade which in relation to the project is adjacent, this building is Preston’s historical architecture. The miller arcade is one of the first indoor shopping centres within the north-west. Sadly the Mill-er Arcade has empty properties this area of the city of Preston is abundant with takeaways and nightclubs which only has activity around the area at night. This “concept” the fashion academy would utilize the empty spaces and create “pop up” fashion shops with gallery’s and exhibition spaces around the area. Creating a unique city vibe to the area hopefully this will encourage higher quality of tenants around the area of church street.

Studio Spaces

The studio spaces within the fashion academy are positioned at the top of the building taking over the top three floors over looking the city. This is where all the courses will socialise and develop the necessary skills to create collections of fashion. Which in turn would be sold in the city. The concept of keeping the students in the city after they’ve graduated with guaranteed job vacancy’s is crucial within the development of this pro-posal.

UtopiaThe Marina

This project was based with in Burnley, this north west town is slowly in decline and showing that the young peo-ple of this town wish to leave as soon as they can. Looking at history of Burnley its clear to see that this town has lost its purpose it was the heart of the cotton industry, this was the main employment for the town with the hub of this happening in the Weaver’s Triangle this was the power house of the town, but now this is probably the most de-prived area now. As seeing this dramatic decline with in the town its tried to fight for help of the government and lost in many cases. The concept of the “Lost Generation” and how its effected the young people of the town is clear to see within the researched gathered. The main purpose was to re- vitalize this area of Burnley but also to bring people back to the area like they once did when the factories were there. This concept was to bring a new hub to the weavers triangle but also to create a revenue to allow the work to maintain around the canal. These canals were great struc-tures constructed and now these have forgotten its time to bring back the canal and get back on the waterways. This would be the help of a marina that other towns along the Leeds and Liver- pool canal can travel along the waterways to experience a new way in which to travel.

Graffiti Work - Mass Produced With No Identity

This project was based with in Burnley, this north west town is slowly in decline and showing that the young people of this town wish to leave as soon as they can. Looking at history of Burnley its clear to see that this town has lost its purpose it was the heart of the cotton industry, this was the main employment for the town with the hub of this happening in the Weaver’s triangle this was the power house of the town, but now this is probably the most deprived area now. As seeing this dramatic decline with in the town its tried to fight for help of the government and lost in many cases. The idea behind this piece of work was I wanted to show the connections between Burnley Leeds and Liverpool an abstract map. The reason for denim is that this item is now mass produced around the world we look at jeans and have no idea where they came from or who made them, a bit like Burnley its lost its identity and has become another town with mass - produced architecture.

Housing Development SawleyThis project was all about housing, creating affordable housing the a rural area. The location was Sawley just outside of Clitheroe. The housing was for four groups of people the use of mixing social housing with private housing. The design was simple and clean designs with the idea of private and public spaces for each resident. The plot was on a flooding plain the so this had to be taken into consideration the solution was to create an embankment stepped a bit like at the sea side with the same idea of bringing people theatregoer.

Page 18: Portfolio Liam Bentley

Flooding ConceptsDue to the nature of the site flooding strategy would be crucial for the design of the housing project. Ideas in- clued stilts, a over flow river and dam as shown in the rough sketches. To decide in which one would be accept- able cost and safety were the main objectives as there would be elderly and young people around the area The decision was to create a dam but with the effect of a steps to create a place within the new estate a place in which the locals and the new residents could use as a social encounter and interacting place

Museum of Weather Ribblehead

Set at the base of Ribblehead viaduct, the project was to create a museum of weather experimenting with abstract art the concept of stripping back the un-important and showing what needs to be seen. The concept was to create struc-ture that wouldn’t be a complete finished building the main structure would be steel cages filled with rubble to create walls the main heart of the main concept was to create an oasis within the harsh exposed lands of Ribblehead. The muse-um side would all be interactive , winds would create sound "the singing ring-ing wall'. A place of solstice, a colourful area of colour. The main concept was to make the building interactive for anyone to enjoy.

Using The Un-Used To Create New Live Work Units within PrestonThe brief was to create a live work unit in unused areas within the city of Preston. The client was a ceramist creating one off pieces to exhibit and to sell . The location selected was a small unused space on Winckley street which was next to a tapas restaurant/bar. The design was expanded on the re-quirements for the client and his needs ,The design was to create a tower of ten stories comprising of studio , workshop and living quarters ,designs were developed through a series of models to suit the site and the requirements for the client but had to take into consideration of the local area which is a conservation area this does not reflect the design but to create a structure that could be assembled and disassembled was an option.
