Money Mind - Exotic Invesments: Luxury Yachts

Producer: Sabrina yaccob.

You need to be fairly rich to own a luxury yacht. It’ll cost you millions to buy and maintain one. Money Mind’s Sabrina Yaccob takes a closer look at what you should know before you decide to invest in luxury yachts.

Being given the chance to produce my own segment for money mind, this was the first major project where everything was done by me from preproduction to postproduction. I worked closely with the crew to bring out my concepts that luxury yachts are more then a lifestyle and that one can invest in it too. Wanting to create my own spin to it and add my own personality to the show, I made this talked to the people who have already done it to share their side of the story to potential investors.

This segment was telecasted on CNA, Money Mind on 20th June 2015, 1030pm.

Local Champions, Global Leaders- Toast Box (2nd Place)

producer, editor: Sabrina yaccob.

Through this competition, our group was assigned to Toast Box and was tasked to showcase how Toast Box preserved the Singapore culture.

We completed a collection of videos that to us, best represents Toast Box’s contributions in Singapore. We also decided on having Singaporeans try and talk about their experience with Toast Box.

To add to the homely Toast Box restaurant feel, we have incorporated their theme and design into our booth to get a holistic experience of Toast Box as you watch the videos. On top of that, facts and snippets of Toast Box are placed around for you to look at to understand a little more about it as you go along.

after looking through catalogues. Due to the high level of intricacy, he decided to switch to making pin hole cameras.

All parts of the pin hole cam-era are made from scratch. Mr Khamis never buys any of his part and believes that making the parts is part of the process of making a pin hole camera.

Mr Khamis said firmly: “In order

for my cameras to be authentic, the process should be authentic as well and that’s why all the parts are handmade and not machine made.” He even uses food co-louring to paint his camera when people request a touch of colour to keep the authenticity.

Just like the balcony where he makes the cameras, the house too helped kick start Mr Khamis’s photography career.

THE home of Mr Khamis Ariffin, better known as Karto, in Toa Payoh may look like any HDB flat except that it gives off a rustic and authentic feel akin to a house in the 50s.

However, the real deal awaits in the kitchen of this 68-year-old. Away from the bustling life in Singapore, he sits in the com-fort of his balcony, doing what he loves most – making pinhole cameras and developing the beau-tiful moments he has captured.

How it started

Mr Khamis started making pinhole cameras in the early 90s. Coming from a low-income family, he could not afford to buy a camera to sustain his love for photography. So, he decided to create one himself.

Due to not having any guidance or teaching, Mr Khamis took one year to finish making his first camera, a medium format camera

In the early stages, Mr Khamis would take product photos in his house for three years. From there, he slowly started to take photos of famous celebrities in his home such as Helter Skelter and then to models such as Junita Simon and Wendy Jacobs during his time in HerWorld and other female magazines.

Despite everything, Mr Khamis still remains humble and down to earth. When students come over to buy his cameras, he always allows them to pay at whatever price they can afford. The money they give, Mr Khamis too does not take it instead, he uses most of the money given by the students to help out the less fortunate that he knows and occasionally, he brings students along with him on his trips of going door to door to help the less fortunate.

his humble per-sonality

His past when he couldn’t afford something small like ice-cream or rojak due to not having mon-ey is what prompted Mr Khamis to eagerly help out with the less fortunate.

A TESTAMENT TO CRAFTSMANSHIP:

THE KICKSTARTER: This medium-format camera was the first cam-era that he built back in 1991 which took him nearly a year to com-plete. Due to the high level of intricacy needed to build this camera, it prompted him to make his renowned pinhole camera instead. (Photo: Azmi Athni)

“When I think back, I remember the time in the past when I was a kid,” said Mr Khamis.

“So I don’t want to live a good life and just forget about the past, so I constantly remind myself about what it was like that. It’s a con-stant reminder to me.”

BY: SABRINA YACCOB

the event:On the 3rd of January, an Edusave Merit Bursary Award Presentation Ceremony was held for both primary and sec-ondary school students living in Marsling Zone 6 RC. Held from 1 till 5 in the afternoon, the students were awarded for their excellence in academics, leadership or both. Guest-of-Honor on the day was Mr Ha-wazi Daipi who took the stage to deliver a keynote address to both the students and parents who attended.

The event which was initially supposed to be held at the open

space at Block 310 but was shifted to Fuchun CC at

11.30 a.m. due to a fu-neral happening on the

site. Mr Hawazi ex-pressed his thoughts on the change.

“We celebrate your success this afternoon

but we don’t want to disturb the peace at the

funeral wake. I think when a

family is grieving we don’t want to be seen celebrating.”

The event kick-started with a dance performance by Elite Crew (pictured left) which many of them enjoyed as they danced to songs of their gener-ation.

Despite the move, the event still remained jovial and Marsling Zone 6 RC still celebrated the success of the students. Parents of these children were seen with

smiles on their faces and were proud of their child’s achieve-ment and believe such award ceremonies can benefit them even more.

ADVICE: “When they get the award, they will feel proud and that mo-ment itself will motivate them to keep up the hard work,” said Mdm Juraidah, 38.

Ain Nadhirah (pictured right), 17 from CHIJ St Joseph won three awards that day and felt pleased because she thought of the award ceremony as a form of recognition for her efforts and also felt like she had done something for herself, her school and the people around her as well. She shares her se-crets to balancing both academ-ics and CCA.

“Keep things simple. How I learn is by being with my friends even though we have different standards we can still share our knowledge together.”

The day ended with a pho-to-taking session for the award-ed students and the guest-of-honours to celebrate this joyous moment.
