THE
FIRSTGREAT
COMMANDMENTJeffrey R. Holland
Wehave a life of devoteddiscipleship to give in
demonstratingour love of
the Lord.
There is almost nogroup in history forwhom I have moresympathy than I havefor the eleven remainingApostles immediatelyfollowing the death ofthe Savior of the world.I think we sometimesf o r g e t j u s t h o winexperienced they stillwere and how totallydependent upon Jesusthey had of necessitybeen. To them He had
said, Have I been so longtime with you, and yet hast thou
not known me? But, of course, to them He hadnt been
T h e F i rs t G r ea t C om m a n d m e n t 1
I testify from the bottom of my heart, with theintensity of my soul, to all who can hear my voice thatthose apostolic keys have been restored to the earth, andthey are found in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. To those who have not yet joined with usin this g reat final cause of Christ, we say, Please come.To those who were once with us but have retreated, preferring to pick and choose a few cultural hors doeuvresfrom the smorgasbord of the Restoration and leave therest of the feast, I say that I fear you face a lot of longnights and empty nets. The call is to come back, to staytrue, to love God, and to lend a hand. I include in thatcall to fixed faithfulness every returned missionary whoever stood in a baptismal font and with arm to the squaresaid, Having been commissioned of Jesus Christ.16 Thatcommission was to have changed your convert forever, but it was surely supposed to have changed you foreveras well. To the youth of the Church rising up to missionsand temples and marriage, we say: Love God and remainclean from the blood and sins of this generation. Youhave a monumental work to do, underscored by thatmarvelous announcement President Thomas S. Monsonmade yesterday morning. Your Father in Heaven expects
your loyalty and your love at every stage of your life. To all within the sound of my voice, the voiceof Christ comes ringing down through the halls of time, asking each one of us while there is time, Do you loveme? And for every one of us, I answer with my honorand my soul,
And having set our hand to the plough,17 we will neverlook back until this work is finished and love of God andneighbor rules the world. In the name of Jesus Christ, amen.
Now it was happeningagain. These children, as theywere rightly called, eagerly loweredtheir net, and they were not ableto draw it for the multitude offishes.8 John said the obvious: Itis the Lord.9 And over the edgeof the boat, the irrepressible Peterleaped. After a joyful reunion withthe resurrected Jesus, Peter had anexchange with the Savior that Iconsider the crucial turning pointof the apostolic ministry generallyand certainly for Peter personally, moving this great rock of a man to amajestic life of devoted service andleadership. Looking at their batteredlittle boats, their frayed nets, and a
stunning pile of 153 fish, Jesus saidto His senior Apostle, Peter, doyou love me more than you love allthis? Peter said, Yea, Lord; thouknowest that I love thee.10The Savior responds to that replybut continues to look into the eyes ofHis disciple and says again, Peter,do you love me? Undoubtedlyconfused a bit by the repetition ofthe question, the great fishermananswers a second time, Yea, Lord;thou knowest that I love thee.11 The Savior again gives abrief response, but with relentlessscrutiny He asks for the third time,
Peter, do you love me?By now surely Peter is feelingtruly uncomfortable. Perhapsthere is in his heart the memoryof only a few days earlier when hehad been asked another questionthree times and he had answeredequally emphaticallybut in thenegative. Or perhaps he began towonder if he misunderstood theMaster Teachers question. Orperhaps he was searching his heart, seeking honest confirmation of theanswer he had given so readily, almost automatically. Whateverhis feelings, Peter said for the thirdtime, Lord, thou knowest that Ilove thee.12
To which Jesus responded(and here again I acknowledge mynonscriptural elaboration), perhapssaying something like: Then Peter, why are you here? Why are we backon this same shore, by these samenets, having this same conversation?Wasnt it obvious then and isnt itobvious now that if I want fish, Ican get fish? What I need, Peter, aredisciplesand I need them forever.I need someone to feed my sheepand save my lambs. I need someoneto preach my gospel and defend myfaith. I need someone who lovesme, truly, truly loves me, and loveswhat our Father in Heaven has
