    ype and ypography

Tis is an experimentational business card that I designed. I used various tools

and techniques within InDesign such as the type on path tool to create interest-ing visual elements.

o make the business card original and to reflect the experimentational purposeso the product, I used techniques like the manipulation o anchor points on thename. Tis was done by simply dragging points to the desired point. Similarly, Icombined different onts or each letter within the word ypography. I chose ablue colour scheme, complemented by a combination o grey and white ont col-ours.

    Shape and Form

For the Shape and Form section I made a business card based upon a brie. Teclient was a business called Bright ideas design. Te company is young andunky so i tried to develop a business card that would reflect this. Here is the firstdraf compared to the finished product.

    First draf.

    Final draf.

I developed the design by getting rid o the rame around the outside as this wouldcause problems relating to bleed when cut. I also simplified the text ont and effectsto make it easier to read and used the concept o colour bubbles around the logo textrom the original logo. I kept the background the same but added thought bubblesrom the i in ideas.

Colour and Image Grid and Composition

    Critical evaluation:

Image:My choice o image is a close up o an eye which I sourced rom Flickr.com. I elt thatthis would contrast nicely with my idea o shapes as well. I particularly liked the detailo the eye and elt that it would work well within my design and ensured that I adheredto the brie.

Shape:I have used both deault and customized shapes within the design. For example circlesand oblong shapes e.g. or the mouth. I have also used the circle shape to create the tear-drops using additional anchor points and dragging them in. Initially I was struggling orinspiration so I used different shapes as a starting point and built upon it rom there.Colour:I have used a black background which I eel contrasts nicely with the other bright col-ours that I have used like blues, whites and reds. I tried to pick colours that were aes-thetically stimulating or me and a balance that looked effective at a first glance. OverallI think the design turned out okay or a first draf.

For my exploration into colour and image I designed a cd ront cover. Te project wasrelatively open in terms o creative scope but I did have certain guidelines to adhere to.For example the size o the cover, it had to include atleast one image and source thatimage rom creative commons.

I worked within a team o our in order to create a clear recognisable house style acrossa number o double page spreads and experiment with the grid and breaking the grid. asA group we produced three spreads, keeping the ocus on the house style and the visualaesthetic o each product in terms o the grid and composition.

    GRADUATE MAKEOVERThePlanpresentsthe guide to giving

yourself acareer makeover to go get thatjob. From interviewtipsto personal

presentation, this is how to sell yourself asthe perfect graduate employee...

In the modern job market the average ap-plicant to agraduate jobis acarbon copyof the next andof the next andof the next. All have GSCEs, three A levelsand ade-gree. So howdo you make yourself stand

    out from the crowd?

    PRESENTATION!

The hardest part isgetting through the rststage-the CV. No more than two pages. So says Annmarie Hanlon, responsible forhiring andring over the last 14 yearsforthe AHA Consultancy. Much dependson agoodlooking CVpickedup from the pile onthe table. Istillget people sending me theirCV with hand-written notesin the margin, andgraduatesare especiallybadat listingalltheir modules from the last three years.

    That just makesme switch off.

After those three yearsof hardwork it seemsthat employersare not asinterestedin yourdegree than you are leadto believe. Anacademic CVisboring andyou dont get asense of the applicant. Personalisation isim-portant; even sending apicture of yourselfisbecoming more and more acceptable.

Keeping it short isalso veryimportant, asismaking it eye-catching. Sometimes youhave to speculate to accumulate. Yellowisa verypositive colour to print onto, redisverynegative andso is orange. Annmarierecommendskeeping three different CVsfor different jobs. A generalCVis goodformiddle of the roadjobs, but you should al-wayshave aback-upto sellyour academicachievementsandone to sellyour person-

    alityover the academic.

But, like Donny and Marie and Buzz andWoody, the CVhas itsown handin handpartner-the covering letter. Most coveringlettersI get are uselessand lledwith mis-takes-I stillget lettersto Dear sirbecausesomeone hasnt botheredto do their re-search correctly. Theyhave to be ballsyandhave bite to get noticed. Theyshouldalwaysend on an action point such as Iwillcontact you next week to answer any

questionsyou mayhave about myapplication, thatsthe wayto getyour name noticedandto get the

    jobyou want.

Thisis when Wordcomesinto itsown with a ready-made templatefor aformalletter. But thiscan onlyhelpyou asfar as layout iscon-cerned. Technicalitiesof Sir andMadammust be correct. If youhave aname to write to, nish itYoursSincerely but if not, YoursFaithfullywill sufce. It wont earnyou points, but it willbe noticed ifit isincorrect, and you dont wantto start off badlybefore you have

    met the interviewer.

So letsassume it all went accord-ing to plan. Your CV was short, concise andamboyantly colour-ed. The covering letter saidin nouncertain termsHire meand you

get the phone callinviting youfor an interview. Thisis where thereal pressure begins. A CV youcan pore over for hours until it isperfect, but on the dayitself youhave to think fast andclearly for

    yourself.

Even before you open your mouthyou are being judged, SaysAnn-marie. Idont care what anyonesays-suitsare usuallya must, andyou shouldbe aware of the gen-eration gap. No matter howcon-temporaryyou maylook you haveto think of your employers. Youarent going to get that jobin thecityif your face isfullof piercings

    andyou have ashavedhead.

So with that in mind ThePlan hasput together the perfect dress toimpresswardrobe for that big day.

    Inthewardrobe

    Even if you havent got

    much money you can

    still look good.

So says Nick Jeffries, astyle consultant andfashion buyer for Next UK.Suitsneedto look smart, but that doesnt needtomean spending alot ofmoney. When I nisheduniv e rs i ty I ha d d ebts, but Iknewthat mylastsplash of cash wouldbeon agoodsuit that hada

timelessappealto it andwouldstilllook goodintwo or three years time, insteadof one of thesemore modern suits thatwillbe out of fashion in a

season.Black isa goodcolourthat can be used foreverything from funer-als to weddings to in-

terviews, and looked after andcleanedin the right wayand youwillget plenty of life out of it. Ba-sicallyblack goeswith everything.Youcanwear it witha blackshirtandtie for thecool modgangsterlook. Or swap with awhite shirtandcolouredtie for the interviewsituation. A single breasted suitjacket, with a high neckline is agoodlook, as it is contemporaryenough to be in fashion, but hasthe staying power that you need

    for asituation like an interview.

A big fashion faux pasis the car-toon character tie. Althoughamusing when receivedat Christ-masit doesnot project the correctimage. It makesyou look like ajoker. You cannot go wrong withthe white shirt andplain colouredtie. The tie doesnt have to be adullcolour, but agoodsilk tie isal-

    waysagood buy.

Nick is very passionate aboutshoes, andsayshe despairswhenhe seesthe wrong kindof shoeson

    peoplesfeet.

    You never want to look

    like your dad,

but some people just endup get-ting sucked into that awful thinlace up strange pattern on thetoe of the shoe affair that Ihate somuch. Dont go for chunkysolesanddont go for Velcro. It lookslike you cant tie your own lacesandyour mum doesnt want youto wear out another pair of shoes

    playing football.

Above allhisadvice isto be com-fortable. If you dont think you lookgoodthen you wont feelgood. You dont have to look like amil-lion dollarsjust to look the part. Agoodsuit willnot be noticed, but a

    badsuit will.

    Intheinterview

Thisis where you can make or break yourjobprospects. You have to be preparedforeverything andremember the golden rule-condence iseverything. Hesitation isneg-ative after you have been askeda ques-tion. Annmarie isadamant about this. Itlookslike you are not preparedproperlyforthe interview. Dont just walk in there prettysure you knoweverything about the com-

pany, KNOW that you know everything.

A favourite trick of interviewpanelsis to ex-amine some papers andkeep quiet. Thisis not your opportunityto go off on somemeaningless babble about your journeyhere thismorning, or what happenedlastnight, thisisa test to see if the stressisgettingto you. When theydo ask you aquestion, ifit can be answeredin a short answer then

    do so.

Be preparedfor them to ask you if youhave any questionsfor them warns Ann-marie Ive got allthe jobsI have ever gonefor, andIthink itsbecause Iimpressedthemwith the questionsIasked at the endof theinterview. I wouldsay to them Howmanyother applicantsam Iup against?or Doyou think Im the right person for this job?I wasnervouswhen I saidthem, but they

    paidoff in the end.

    Finding a job isnt hard.

Finding a jobthat suitsyou as agraduateis. Anyone with the right combination ofpersonality, qualications, drive andmostimportantlyoptimism can get the jobtheydesire, but at the endof the dayitsall downto howyou come over to your prospectiveemployersin the CV, the covering letter andthe interview. Get them allright, and youll

have given them what theywant. +

How we developed a house style:

Beore creating the spreads we decided on a ew eatures that would remai contin-uous throughout every spread. For example we all used the light blue, white, blackand grey colour scheme and the gray banners at the top and bottom. My articlewas the only one that broke the grid, I used an image to do this.

In this section I am including a complete development o a ashion and culturebrand called rashion. In responsing yto the brie, firstly I have produced a mag-

azine cover accompanied by our articles making sure that I adhere to the quirkystyle o the magazine aimed at mainly 18-30 year old emales.. It was very impor-tant to use the skills that I had developed during the Grid and C omposition weekin terms o establishing a house style and continuity within the magazine.

I developed the magazine urther by desingning a web layout or digital consump-tion o the magazine and transerred this onto an iPhone ormat and iPad ormatto make sure that the magazine is widely accessible and available to as many peopeas possible.

I then developed the magazine by designing merchandise that people can eitherpurchase or get ree handouts.

    Magazine

in a day.I used various techniques and eatures throughout the cover and articles to try andrespond to the brie effectively. One o the main aspects with the magazine is thecolour scheme, I eel that by choosing pink, black and white the emininity withinthe magazine is reinorced.

Also the selection o the images throughout the magazine was important consid-ering that we had some content to choose rom. I chose the main image on thecover as I liked the concept o making eye contact with the audiece. Te imageswithin the articles corresponded to the respective topic o the article.

I repeated the logo o the magazine that I created in the right corner o every arti-cle and kept the same principle or the three pink bubbles emerging rom the bot-tom right hand corner o each article. I eel that this reinorces a clear house style.

I included a search bar at thetop to make the website as user

Boxed outlines were used as Ielt that it separated differentsections effectively and kept thewebsite looking neat and tidy.

I designed all o the products that would be given out in the bag and the bagitsel.

I incorporated the pink bubbles rom the magazine to im-mediately reinorce contonuity and a specific house style as soon as the public arehanded the bag. Te colour scheme has been kept the same and the logo has beenintegrated again.
