Reasons for Investing in Research and
Postgraduate Studies
2
• Provide an ecosystem of knowledge institutions in public, private and civil
society to support the socio-economic development, including the
consolidation of democracy
• Knowledge institutions provide agency to enable society to reflect on its
own reality in context and suggest modalities of changing it for the better
• Ensure that a society is not solely reliant on external knowledge and
external understanding of our context and reality
• Enable democratization of knowledge by ensuring that knowledge
production is engaged with society
• Investment in future generations enable the transformation of the inherited
knowledge system
Reasons for Investing in Research and
Postgraduate Studies
3
• The transformation of economies from Primary (eg agricultural production
and mining) and Secondary Sectors (eg mass manufacturing) to Tertiary
(eg advanced services such as finance and legal) and beyond have been
dependent on knowledge
• The transformation is thus dependent on capacity and capabilities of
knowledge institutions and individuals, which will enable the development of
new sectors of the economy
• Investment is thus necessary in institutions (incl enablers such as research
infrastructure and connectivity), individuals (academics, researchers,
scholars and postgraduate students) and the research enterprise, being is
a system of connected actors, actions and spaces that creates, adapts and
adopts knowledge in order to shift knowledge boundaries, and to positively
impact society, the economy and the natural environment

Support for Research and Postgraduate Studies
7
• NSFAS provides support for financially needy and academically deserving undergraduate students
• NRF provides support for institutions, researchers and postgraduate students pursuing research on a competitive basis
• Research infrastructure and equipment grants
• Research grants
• Postgraduate student bursaries
• Demand and need for researcher and postgraduate student support exceeds available support
• Given the need to grow and transform the research system, SA needs to aim to support up to 20% of registered PG students within the next 10 years
• Similarly, we should aim to support a 50% success and funding rate of research proposals submitted within the next 10 years
