PORTFOLIO COMMITTEE ON BASIC EDUCATION MEETING

In improving the quality of education through oversight, , the Portfolio Committee on Basic Education, led by the Chairperson

Ms Nomalungelo Gina, held a meeting with the KZN Department of Education, following the oversight visit that occurred earlier

this year. The main purpose of this meeting was to look at the state of readiness for the National Senior Certificate (NSC)

exams in 2015 and Annual National Assessments (ANA).

“This year we initiated a Programme called Operation Bounce Back after the decline of 7% in last year’s NSC Examination

results. The Department of Education is inspired the Freedom Charter clause which says “The doors of Learning and Culture

shall be opened,’’ said MEC Nkonyeni, who was part of the gathering. Amongst the important issues that were discussed

were: 10 strategic pillars from 2014/ 2015 to 2019/ 2020, KZN DOE at Glance, Performance in Mathematics, Mathematics

Development, Access Matters, Budget 2014/2015 and under expenditure, the 2015 Education Summit, Ilembe District 2015

challenges, Oparation Bounce Back, National School Nutrition Programme, School Infrastructure, Learner Teacher Support

Material, Learner Transport, Post Provision Norms and Examination Readiness.
