GRADUATION PROJECTCONTRAFRONTGRADUATION PROJECTCONTRAFRONTGRADUATION PROJECTNIJMEGEN CONTRAFRONTNIJMEGEN CONTRAFRONT2010NIJMEGEN 2010NIJMEGEN location across the historical city centre of Nijmegen a new high-density urban city centre (3.000 accommoda-tions and urban facilities) will rise adjacent to the river. Currently this is a visual open and green space (100ha) with several agricultural holdings surrounding a former citadel situated behind the river dike in an idyllic land-scape with many orchards.

design the new urban plan attempts to give shape to the new rising city the Waalsprong as it’s city façade. Re-sulting in a rigid, though fl exible urban plan consisting of enclosed units which retrieves it’s city edge from the river dike, creating a new endowed space with the cita-del in the center of the river landscape, instead of being swallowed by the new urban city centre. High-density building units releases pressure on the rural space by adding green buff er zones and a fl uxing city edge to the urban design plan.

concept creating a new landscape based on former land usage and human occupation rectangular on the river. This hierarchical composition of watercourses has been the re-gions image of the past one and a half millennium, until the industrialization cut and pierced it with new massive infrastructures. Emphasizing it’s former strategic gateway function is a important motive.

1ARNHEM-NIJMEGEN location a new bikeway crossing the a rural and open agricultural landscape fouled between the expanding cities Arnhem and Nijmegen. This area, known for its small-scale agriculture (varied landscape), expressed by many orchards, willow- and awl-rows and grand vista’s will be the backdrop for a new utilitarian and recreative bicycle highway.

design generate new innovatory and sustainable designconcepts applicable to new bicyclehighways persuading motorists to bike to work or school, down-sizing the problem of traffi c jams. Off ering suffi cient provisions by creating and designing numerous nodes arranged as service-, rest-, view- or recreational point.

concept ’de fi etsketting’ (bicycle chain): planning and de-signing visual adaptable nodes across the bikeway, redu-cing the experience of distance by adding a visual iconic and attractive design identity (kiosk, servicepoints). These individually perceptible kiosks (gadget) stimulate users to continue, by shortening the distance experience, and will anticipate a pleasant ride.

The projectarea, one by one kilometer free of any vast building masses, is characterised by a rolling landscape and small-scale agriculture. Furthermore, a listed mon-ument (Schaesberg castle ruins) and its domain is situ-ated next to the city edge of Heerlen.

design the historical education will be expressed throughout a variety of design interventions. Added to the domain will be a bungalowpark (stay tourism), mu-seum, regional shop (local fruit/vegetable), agritourism and a public park. All carrying out the message of the development of the historical landscape. Linked to re-gional recreational network (hiking/biking) the domain will function as plural transfer point for the region.

09STUTTGART 200920STUTTGART 20STUTTGART

09STUTTGART 20STUTTGART location situated in a very natural forest environment, the open expression of the garden contrasts with its set-ting. Landscape typical elements such as a pond which is a natural spring and the monumental chestnut lane are prominent features. The historical and characteristic house is centered en elevated on the terrain, this makes the approach toward the house very theatrical.

design based on a powerfull design statement another connecting element will be a light element which will allow you to experience the garden throughout the day. This is an important feature. Staying and sitting is a big part for your experience of the garden, we believe that by creating two terraces you will have all the visual stimulation and also peace and nature at your hand. The contrast in shapes, material and most of all color will make this design a true statement.

concept the new design will embrace the openness of the garden. Color is the main theme and will connect the front and back, in the shape of a very powerful and col-orful fl ower ribbon. It will create unity and accentuate the altitude lines. A color explosion of fl owers and plants will be the prominent feature. This will both contrast with and complement the natural vegetation of the surrounding forests.

World cities as Amsterdam, Paris and New York will need to cherish and invest in future developments of the public space within the ur-ban context.

design ’groen uit de kunst!’: the evolution of horticul-tural designarchetypes as a result of movement in art and architectural style resulting in future artifi cial green (see concepts). The lack of space obliges innovative de-sign solutions executed with current opportunities and standards (imaginary green, projections, optical illu-sion, placebo)
