John Baskerville designed the typeface Baskerville in 1757. The typeface is a transitional style serif font that falls between an old style and a modern style typeface. Baskervilles intent with his typeface was to upgrade or improve upon the styles of William Caslons. Baskerville took the style of Calson and changed the thickness of the strokes and the variations between the strokes of the typeface. Baskerville wanted to create a perfect typeface that was easy to read and could be easily used for printing.

Adrian Frutiger designed the typeface Courier in 1955. Frutiger was commissioned by IBM to design a typeface for the use in typewriters and thus courier was born. Courier is a monospace slab serif font that looks like an old typewriter font. Courier is best used when consistency is needed for alignment and use of columns. It is used mostly in electronics and also is used for screenplays. IBM did not secure legal rights to the typeface and therefore has become a standard for typefaces.

Paul Renner designed the typeface futura in 1927. The typeface is of the Bauhaus style and was designed to be a geometric sans-serif font. Renner was not part of the Bauhaus however like the ideas of the Bauhaus style he believed that a modern typeface should be new and exciting rather then being a remake of an old idea or design. Renner wanted futura to have only the essentials and no decorations. The typeface is very reminiscent of old Greek writings and is very geometric is shape and style. Furtura was the first of its kind and was therefore very influential in typography.
