Dear Sir/Madam,
My name is David Sheridan, I am 25 years of age and am currently studying architecture in
the Mackintosh School of Architecture, Glasgow. I am writing with regards to the possibility of
working in your office this year, to gain experience in a practice environment in between my
studies.
I have a degree in Architectural Technology from the Dublin Institute of Technology in which
I was awarded a 2.1 and I am currently in my third year of a Bachelor of Architecture degree at the
Glasgow School of Art. Previously I spent three months working for a well-known and award-wining
practice in Dublin and gained excellent experience as an assistant architect.
Once I receive my Part I qualification in June I wish to take a year in which to gain more
practical experience until I return to university at the beginning of September 2014 to begin my Part
II. I would be privileged to work in your practice to broaden my knowledge of the profession and
gain valuable working experience. I understand that due to the current economical climate there
may be little amount of work available, but I am open to any duration of employment as I believe it
is essential in my development as an architectural student.
I am a very hard-working and dedicated person, who thrives on the opportunity to be given a
challenge and do my upmost to complete it to the best of my ability. I enjoy working, and am rarely
phased or overwhelmed by large workloads. Similarly I am used to working to deadlines and always
ensure that I keep on top of my work from the beginning to ensure this. This is largely due to my
educational experience, as both in the degree I have completed and the degree I am currently
studying the workload is extremely high, and strict deadlines are regular and heavily enforced; but
also due to my professional experience where I worked on a number of projects at planning and
tender/construction stage.
I would appreciate if you could take the time to consider me as a potential addition to your
practice this year and I look forward to hearing from you.
Best Regards,
David Sheridan

For the Water project I chose to design a hydrotherapy spa for pre and
post-natal women. The site is located on the grounds of Culzean Castle
in Ayrshire in Scotland, between a lake and the sea; in an area of dense
forest.
I want to create a sanctuary of health and well being for women who
are both going and have just gone through pregnancy; to provide phys-
ical and mental respite from the stress and strain of carrying a child. I
want the user to feel both isolated from the outside world yet immersed
in nature, for they are going through the most natural experience of
human life.

The Salt project was situated in the coastal town of Saltcoats, 50km
south-west of Glasgow. The town owes its name to its history of salt
making using salt pans and cottages along its coast. The project
was ‘commissioned’ by Peacock Salt, a local company who have
the intention of producing artisan salt in the town of Saltcoats, using
blackthorn-branch filled Graduation Towers; a traditional European
method of salt production. The complex would also include a visi-
tor’s centre/museum, café and salt inhalation rooms. For this project
we were first to do a town study, and use this research to inform the
buiildings and how they react to the site in a way which benefits the
town. I developed the existing development plan for the town to
create a ‘cultural quarter’ in which the towers and complex would
be a focal point.

This project was located in the town of Inveraray, 100km north-
west of Glasgow. We were to design a residential and commercial
building which incorporates four dwellings and a workshop for a
sculptural artist. The site is located at the junction of the two main
routes through Inveraray, Main Street and The Avenue, at the south-
ern threshold of the old town. It’s location by the shore of Loch Fyne
also gives it tremendous views across the lake. I wanted to design
a building which had a strong heavy form, yet was permeable to
pedestrians passing through. I wanted it to be a sculptural piece
to enhance the southern entrance to the town. Its form is based on
both the work of Spanish sculptor Eduardo Chillida and the Scottish
Tower House so as to relate to its function and location. It is brick
construction with vertical circulation concealed within its large di-
aphragm walls. These deep walls enhance the heaviness of the
building from the inside.
