The end of 30 ft road At the end of 30 feet road, also named Bhatiya NagarDharavi Road, is the place I chosed to investigate furtherat the end of my stay in Dharavi. It fascinated me howthe development seemed to bloom around this place/street. Though it was sad too, because the new develop-ment didn’t pay any attention to the elder structure. Asa result of the new development the old dwellings en-ded up in even worse conditions.

TRASHES 2 SYSTEMSHow do different areas throw theirs trashes? Seems like there is two sys-tems within this area, one formal that BMC takes care of and one is infor-mal. In this bigger system of trash you FDQÀQGVPDOOHUV\VWHPVWKDWPRYHtrashes from household to the stations. The informal stations are often close to the common toilettes and bigger open areas outside of the dense hou-sing areas. No one comes where and takes away the trashes instead some-times they burn the pile so it shrinks.

Within this area the infra- structure of water and road are clearly linked. It seems like the roads are where because of the water drainage and its thanks to the water the roads still exist. How Big is Your World? One of the things that struck me in an early encounter with life in Dharavi was how different sized worlds different people had in the slums. I met a woman, Sangeeta, who told me that if she were to reach someone far away so she had to call first. I asked her, ”How far away is” far away ”?” She replied, ”About 5-7 min walk”.

It got me thinking about how our worlds are different in different countries, cultures and cities. To get an under-standing or comparison, I did the same chart for the life in Dharavi and Stockholm. (As you can see on the image it’s only men at the bigger street moving from A to B.)

DISTANCE AND TIME

How I and my parents, friends, neighbors or other inhabitants in Stockholm moves are different than in Dharvai. Now the Dharavi is placed centrally and not Bromma, in Stockholm, which I first compare with. Because I’m in the suburbs should have access to what the city provides I have to leave in 30 minutes by train at least.

Do you live in the middle of Stock-holm are your distances probably shorter and perhaps more often by bicycle or walking. Few can manage with just living within a 7-minute stroll diameter around their home. Jobs, food, clothing, school, leisure, etc.

DISTANCE AND TIME

The perception of time and distance is different for people in Dharavi than it is for us (Swedes / Europeans living in cities).

After talking with Sangeeta, I un-derstood that their world is smaller then what we would think. I asked her what she meant when saying “far away”; it was a 7 minutes walk. Is it because they can not leave home? Or is it because they do not need? Or because they can not afford? Or nothing that attracts them? (These questions deals only with women.) How far children and men moving in the graph below is based more what I think.

Food market ROOM FOR ACTIVITIESI see this market as a framework for activities to take place in. To be filled with colorful food, spices, meat, fish, cheese, crafts, second hand goods or to put up a concert inside the big hall or another event arranged by the market, the city, the hotel, a company or for a private event.

WHY the location? This is an unused place most of the time during the year, though people pass it everyday all year around. The big bike path connects the city center of consumption with the center of knowledge – the university and the hospital. The site is also close to the buss center –Vasa-plan– where all the bus lines connect. This part is also a grey zone now a day, in my opinion. To the left you have “Öst på stan” as you past Östra Kyrkogatan, and just one block away you will start to feel the center.

In the history of Umeå the site between the school and church has had different names and functions: church square, school park and as now “Vänortsparken”, a public park. In the 70’s the old city plan was ”destroy-ed” by the infrastructure that was built to make the city more adapted for car access. Storgatan got broader and a new bridge was build to connect both sides of the river. It was planned for 60 000 cars using the bridge every day. Today it’s about 15 000, so it is much larger then it has to be. The north south axis in the city plan be-tween the two great buildings, the church and the school, became secondary and inferior to the new street and it also had a negative infuence on the connection between the three parks Vänortsparken, Kyrk-parken and Döbelns Park.

I believe that a food market can bring life to this part again, linking to the old north-south axis but also high-light the movement of people in the west-east direction.

Temporary structure We developed this structure to fit as a temporary onefor a food market. The structure should create a spaceunderneath it where the market can take place and it should also work like a bridge. When folded it takes very little space and when unfolding it you can choose different figurations. Since itbridges over an already existing path we wanted it to be able see and walk through so it wouldn’t stop for the movement, just slowing it down giving attention to the the market stands so the market get its audience.

Group work with Emma Sandvik, Andreas Jonsson and Christina Lövald Hellberg.

Forces

Partly unfolded

Completely unfolded

Support Rod Rods are connected between the ground supporting elements in the structure. The wheel based structure folds and unfolds by external forces. This method allows for the structure to transform its shape.

Wire Wires are attached to the sides of the structure where the roof and the ground supporting structures meet and to the bottom of the ground supporting structures. The electric driven wires are also used to fold and unfold the structure. This method allows for the structure to transform its shape.

Rail Ground supporting elements are attached to a rail and can be locked in the rail at certain points. The electric rail is also the force unfolding and folding the structure. This method only allows the structure to fold out straight or bended according to the rail.

Unlock Locking

After doing some research on Locking and its history Ifound how the shape of the performing of the dance had changed since the 70’s. I also noticed that it used to be outdoors on the streets, it still is sometimes. I decided to “Unlock Locking” back to it’s original shape and origi-nal place – outdoor. The space would not be only for dancers, if it should I believe that the real street dancers would not go there. The space need to be a place where citizens could stop and be curious and to be surprised. The dance is about locking in positions and a lot of turning. I used that for my “furniture” in the square. Every light piece has a locked point it can be rotated around and you as a visitor can create different spacesby reordering the walls. Two walls are fixed and innon-transparent material and works as a coulisse for the dancers so nothing would distract the attention from them. Used if wanted. The light walls has different heights some works as walls other more for dividing areas and others are low enough so you as audience can sit on them.

Future City Project, Standard What would the world look like if we changed the standards? How we live and move ourselves etc. How would that effect the movement within the city and the placement of functions? What is a good standard? A standard has a kind of power, why don’t do it more fun?

The input to the project started with me questioning how we move today in our cities. On the street level we have cars and underground the metro. The car represent an individual movement while the metro a collective way of moving. How would the organsation of movements and functions be affected if everyone could move indepen-dently in the air? I tried that idea by giving everyone in my city the possibility to move on a pink hovering big balloon.

The next question became, how will this new way of moving effect the rhythm and spaces in the city? Will new types of spaces be developed? All the old com-munication areas is now replaced by free movement in the air, what happens with the old ones on the ground and will there be any need to be underground? Shops and other social functions and activities don’t need to be on the street level any more to be accessible. What role will the roof tops play in a city like that?

Since I have the freedom in this experiment to decide the standards I wanted to create bigger spaces then needed for survival. I also wanted to leave some free-dom for the ones living in the city to create a home for themselves. The module became 5x5x5 and all dwelling units consist by 3 modules. All dwellings should also have contact with the façade in 2 directions. Since the module is 5m high you can have two floors if you want to but also divide it into a duplex for sleeping on the upper half for example.

EC.F. Møller Pinterest Initiator to create two Pinterest accounts for C.F. Møller. One for the employees to pin their inspiration and one for C.F. Møller to show their work.

Made a guide for the two accounts together with:Marie-Louise E. Albertsen & Diana Sørensen.Julian Weyer

C.F. MØLLER KONTON

C.F. Møller Architects

A Inspo

Genom att publicera dina bilder på Pinterest ger du Pinterest omfattande tillstånd att använda bilderna ”you hereby grant to Cold Brew Labs a worldwide, irrevocable, perpetual, non-exclusive, transferable, royalty-free license, with the right to sublicense, to use, copy, adapt, modify, distribute, license, sell, transfer, publicly display, publicly perform, transmit, stream, broadcast, access, view, and otherwise exploit such Member Content only on, through or by means of the Site, Application or Services”

FBachelor Project For me the slum was a big network with different nodes. In between these nodes where communities built up on identity like; religion, profession, origin or a combination. Within the communities different unwritten procedures exist and each community has it’s own way of living and dealing with different difficulties. For me as a woman coming from west it was surprisingly few women at the bigger streets moving around, seemed like only men where at the bigger public spaces. After talking to a few I learned that women stays in their community, taking care of kids, cooking and guarding the community and some worked from home doing papadam for example (a thin bread).

I found this interesting that the entire slum worked because of networks and with constant movement but that it were some that never moved more then a radius of a 5 minutes walk. As a result of these small circles that these women lives in they never come in contact with some functions of the society and misses some important information.

Based on this I want to reach out to women, and not only those who’s circles is in contact with the built project. Therefore I not only want to do a project with a location,I want to create my own network working from thebuilt project and reach out to the women living in othercommunities further away.

An issue that needs to be addressed in the slum is how malnourished a lot of young children are. This can be improved only by providing information. The issue is not an issue because of lack of money it because of lack of knowledge. Therefore the project will be learning women about nutrition and food by cooking together. The built project will be a kitchen and a community space. And then the networked based strategy will be an extension from that building.

The oasisThis site would be interesting to use as a home station. The existing function is a government owned barn where they occasionally give out food. That means that inhabitants already pay attention to this site and are used to it being temporary events. The two functions with free food and health information/education would benefit from each other. Spaces needed are for the mobile clinic when not used, a small reception, small storage and a space for meetings and information about health issues.

Amount of people here would be more controlled since the space isn’t as flexible. 1-30 people at one time.

The mobile clinic will have a network of nodes from where it will do its practice. These sites should be within a context of dwelling to easy connect and reach out to women and children. These nodes would be visit regularly and the topic of the mobile surgery can change during time but always be able to help with some easier health issues.

A ”home station” would be good too. A place from where the round starts, a small health center, a small reception and storage.
