This collection of my work intends to showcase my skills. All of the projects shown were completed during my graduate and undergraduate studies at Ball State University. The projects are grouped by: built work, physical models, digital models and visuals, and also some line work drawings. Not all of my projects are included in this book. These previews are introductions to the projects with more in depth information available on my website. Wrapping up the book is a couple pages of some of the extra images to provide some more sneak peeks of my work.

During my two years in graduate school, I have discovered my interest in the physical construction of objects. This has translated into my projects through detailing and modeling. All of this knowledge culminated in my final creative project, where I investigated a new type of framed straw bale construction system. My final project began in order for me to build at full scale and get my hands dirty. Thus far, I have only begun to scrape the surface of the potential this construction system has as a new method for building. Since freeing myself from the computer, where the precision and tolerances are exact, I have been able to learn much about assembling straw bale with other materials, but it has also been helpful to explore the connections and joinery in the digital and physical realms.

thesis: building knowledge People are makers. We are given this instinct from birth and we gather knowledge as we grow. One of the steps in life to gather knowledge can be formal education; as I have chosen with my pursuit of an architectural education. From my experiences in the architecture curriculum, I have gained a working knowledge of construction principles and building methods. This thesis looks at expanding the knowledge of

conventional framing and Nebraska-style straw bale construction, bales used like bricks, by combining them to create a framed straw bale system. When it began, I knew one thing: I was interested in the building process and how materials were brought together to create buildings. I decided to begin my research by exploring the traditional approaches to straw bale construction by reading books and exploring existing projects.

deck from scrapsThe goal of this project was to keep costs to a minimum by using found material in the client’s barn. A cost estimate was created by digitally modeling the deck. The cost was adjusted after the found materials were acquired. It was requested that the railing and stair be completed at a later date. The project was completed after two days and was a product of myself and a fellow classmate.

the perchIn conjunction with the Butler Theatre department, the 402 studio designed site specific interventions. Our designs were based upon the space in which they would inhabit, an old dilapidated theatre. The perch attempts to cling onto the existing while leaving no trace of its existence as the previous modifications to the space have done.

casita lindaDuring my Spring break, I flew down to Mexico with a friend to volunteer with non-profit organization Casita Linda. The organization has been building homes to help put better roofs over the heads of families in need. I helped with the construction of an adobe dwelling.

tot spotBall State had been contracted to redesign and build the new tot spot section of the Muncie Children’s museum. The 502 studio worked together to produce a couple proposals. Each step involved working with the client before moving forward. The team was divided up into different roles. The design was a result of looking at other successful children’s museums.

home + workshopThis project was built around its program. The project was a student house with an attached workshop. The house was on the campus of Cranbrook. The house was part of an apprenticeship program in forestry and wood working. The home was an interpretation on the Lovell Beach House by Rudolph Schindler. The bedrooms were lift off the ground floor and the public spaces were two-story spaces.

bsu cultural centerThis project was a proposal for the new multicultural center for Ball State. The current center at Ball State is unable to house their needs. This proposal includes some of the requested spaces: gathering space, conference rooms, library, computer lab, theatre, and cafeteria. My design organizes the spaces around this large space. Many opportunities for interaction exist with this layout. The donut-shaped building also allows for lighting spaces from both sides.

regenerative schoolThe goal of this project was to create a regenerative educational facility. The claims that we once made in earlier studios had to be verified by the testing of metrics and calculating the necessary shadow acreage. This project used straw bale, timber frame, and concrete as its main materials. The spaces include: a library, an auditorium, some classrooms, a cafeteria, and residential units. This project also included a welcome center to introduce visitors to the project’s technologies.

lake houseThe vacation lake house was a short project which was only required to be “barrier free.” The house was located on the North side of Lake Tahoe. The house was laid out by grouping the public spaces together under one large roof and pushing the private spaces to either side of the public space. Because the southern facade is entirely glazed, there is a fair amount of thermal mass to help absorb any heat gain. To keep the direct sun from shining deep into the space, the roof has a large overhang on the South-facing side.

thesis: building knowledge To investigate the construction system more fully, the framed straw bale system was used for the design of a small home. There are many different possibilities when it comes to detailing a home. For this particular instance, I have chosen several different types of openings but only one skinning method. Shown here is an exploded axonometric drawing which shows the house’s main layers: structured bays, straw bales, a wooden skin, and the apertures.

The house is roughly 1,000 square feet and has two bedrooms and a full bath as well as a half bath. The concept for the space planning of the house was drawn from Rudolph Schindler. As you enter the home, there is a two-story public space. This space combines the kitchen, dining, and living room. The private spaces are raised up onto the second level and the servant spaces are pushed under the private space.

art barnThis project was an assignment for Building Systems 2 course. The project was to design an addition to an existing facility. The main idea behind the project was to introduce us to AutoCAD and creating working drawings. We were to create a symbol for our “firm” and create a set of drawings with a cover sheet. A fellow studio mate and I collaborated on the design and then we split the working drawings up. We both produced sheets for our set. Before we compiled our documents into one large set, we sat down and looked over each drawing, red-lining the mistakes and marking up corrections to be made.

This section of the book has a mixture of renderings, models, and built pieces. In an attempt to keep this book from getting too lengthy, only the best projects were given their own page. Although these did not make the cut, they were great projects.
