Informal letter #2

Hello Tony,

I read your letter and saw that you’re really bored and sad. Don’t worry! I’m dropping you a line to give you some useful advice about this situation.First of all, change your attitude. Change is never bad. Think in your new neighborhood like a great change, a “new” life. Second look for new people, especially pretty girls. You can go in the morning to exercise and meet new fitness girls. They are the best! If you exercise in the morning, in the afternoon you can go for a walk in the park or the shopping center. In your neighborhood, this is a great possibility for meeting new people too. That’s all for now my friend. I know that you enjoy exercising which is why I gave to you this advice. Please write back soon and please let me know if my recommendation were useful for you.

Good luck,Julio.

PARIS, WHY MISS IT? By Julio Vásquez

As the Capital of France, Paris has been a great city for more than 2000 years ago. With a huge history and different touristic places it has been given some nicknames, for example “the city of love”, or “the city of lights”. It is full of museums, art places and cathedrals. There are plenty of touristic places. Paris is well-known for its Eiffel tower which is located in the heart of the city. This iron structure has been the symbol of France for 120 years. Also in the city there is the famous Arc de Triomphe, whose design had been inspired on the Roman architecture and symbolizes the triumphal battles of Napoleon Bona-parte. Moreover, topping the list of most visited mu-seums in the world; we find the Louvre museum which is located in the Louvre palace. It has a glass pyramid like a signature marking its entrance. Also, it contains important works of art like paintings of Leonardo Davinci such as “La Monalisa”, and statues like the famous Greek statue “Venus of Milo”

The nightlife in Paris is so romantic. That’s the reason why it has been called the city of love. For instance, in the Eiffel Tower there is a restaurant with an awesome nocturnal landscape, perfect to visit with your partner, but also, located on the west of the Sena River we find the Montparnasse neighborhood. There are plenty of cafeterias, pubs and nightclubs there, ideal for sharing with friends.Undoubtedly, Paris has a lot of things to offers to every tourist. You can enjoy things from cultural visits and tours, to romantic plans and nocturnal parties to sharing with different people and friends. Paris is a terrific choice to turn away the routine of the city.

The day of the dead

The day of the dead by Julio Vásquez

The day of the dead or in Spanish “El dìa de los muertos” is a traditional holiday in Mexico. It takes place every year in all parts of Mexico and in some nearby countries. Also, this event takes place in other different cultures around the world. The holiday is always held on October the 31st and lasts two days until November the 2nd.In despite of its name, the day of the dead is very meaningful for Mexican families. It focuses on gatherings of families and friends to remember and pray for friends or relatives who have died. When I heard about it for the first time, it seemed to me that it was dark and gloomy. However, it is the opposite: you can feel people’s gratitude around the graves, inside houses or simply on streets. The atmosphere of Mexico in that time is quite pleasing to share with family.

Page 16: Portafolio Final Julio Vásquez

In addition, the preparations are amazing. People build special altars where they put different old things of the dead people. For example, they put their favorite food and beverages. Also, people use marigolds and sugar skulls honoring the deceased. Moreover, people leave their houses open to anyone who wants to pray for the departed. To sum up, the day of the dead is an extraordinary holiday in the Mexican culture. I am sure that if you go, you could get an amazing experience learning about another culture. You can even get a “Catrina” like a fabulous souvenir. To my mind, this celebration is spectacular, with all its decorations and its traditions. See people with different costumes like skulls, or see a lot of flowers (in special orange marigolds) everywhere it is amazing! You can feel a carnivalesque atmosphere but with much respect by the people dead.

Away from the Beginning

Everything was quite tragic for them. She felt a lot of things for him. Maybe it was love at first sight, or maybe it was only an obsession. As soon as she looked at him for the first time, she fell in love. And around him, something strange happened. He asked himself: “is it true? Or simply a dream?” When he looked into her eyes, he felt as if he knew everything about her life. After a while he knew that she was the woman of his life. Before he crossed the street, she gathered the courage to speak to him. She said: “I don`t know how, but you are the love of my life. I saw it in your eyes”. He only smiled a sad smile. Regrettably, he could not stay by her side, his life was so moved. His work was not very relaxing: he had to travel around the world. His work was his whole life! In that moment, he only saw the girl and said: “Dont forget me, I won’t forget you!” His eyes were full of tears. He was saying goodbye to the love of his life. He was far, far away at last.

A true Friendship

Carlos is the name of my best friend. We have been friends for more than 5 years. He is only a student who is in 4th semester of systems engineering at the National University of Colombia. However, he is one year younger than me.For every girl that we know, he is handsome. He is tall and heavy build with pale complexion. Moreover, he has got green eyes and blond curly hair. In addition, Carlos is very smart. When he took the university exam, he approved it in his first opportunity. Nevertheless, he can be rather lazy at times, he enjoys life very slow.He always enjoys practicing sports. When we were teenagers, we played football every weekend. We also were so competitive in all, for instance, when we walked, climbed played. Currently, he only studies; he has not more time to spend with his friends. To sum up, I feel very happy for having Carlos as my friend. He is a loyal person with greatest perspective about life. As I said before, he enjoys life very slow and he has taught me it. However sometimes we need to be proactive people. All in all I love my dear friend.

Pros and Cons (Rubric C)

Dear Hilda,About your question with regard life for university students here in Bogotá, I’m going to tell you some advice that maybe can be useful for you.In the first place, Bogotá is a very active city. It has many facilities to students. For example, it has wonderful student sports centers with special discounts. Moreover, there are a lot of internet cafés wherever you go. One point of view in favor of living here, is the social life, you can meet many people from all over the world. On the other hand, to live in Bogotá can be expensive. In particular for students, because the students rents are very expensive. The main drawback here is the traffic. It is noisy because there is lots of traffic, especially around university campus. To conclude, you can live here with many facilities but at the same time you would have to accustom to different things such as the expensive life and the annoying traffic, I hope my information can be of help for your decision about study in Bogotá.Lots of love,Julio.

The movie is rather sad at the beginning with its unexpected twist. However, while Mr. Fredricksen and Russel share in the catchy adventure, the movie becomes funny and nice. And the best is the change of attitude of Mr. Fredricksen, finally he becomes a sweet old man. This film is well worth seeing. It will touch your heart. If you want spend your time with your family laughing a lot, I thoroughly recommend it. It’s a must!.
