With HI 93703 turbidity measurements can beperformed with high precision in the field as wellas in the laboratory. HI93703 turbidity meter isa hand-held, microprocessor-based, batteryoperated instrument used to determine theturbidity of water and waste-water. The metercovers a 0-1000 FTU range in two scales: 0.00to 50.00 FTU and 50 to 1000 FTU. Theautoranging feature of the instrument sets theappropriate range for the measurement.Note: HI 93703 has been designed

according to the ISO 7027International Standard, consequentlythe turbidity measurement unit is theFTU (Formazine Turbidity Unit). FTUis identical to the other internationallyrecognized unit: NTU (NephelometricTurbidity Unit).

GENERAL DESCRIPTION

4

HI 93703 is a portable turbidity meter with the mark, in compliance with the European

directives, ensuring low emission values andaccurate measurements in presence ofelectromagnetic fields.

The meter is housed in a rugged and lightweightcase, with an easy-to-read LCD. To save bat-tery-life, the instrument is equipped with anautomatic shut-off feature which is activatedafter 4-minutes of non-use.

The meter is very simple to use. All operationscan be carried out with only four keys andtrouble-shooting functions can be performedwith displayed error code guides. An exclusivepositive-locking system guarantees that thecuvet is firmly placed in the cell. The keypad iswater-resistant and can be wiped with a moistcloth for quick cleanups.

The one-point calibration at 10 FTU* can beeasily performed using the available stan-dard. In addition, HI 93703 is the first por-table turbidity meter that allows to store thelast calibration date and to retrieve it at theuser’s convenience.

Hanna Instruments has chosen 10 FTU * asthe calibration point because it is the valuethat best fits the water turbidity measure-ments in different applications, from drink-ing water to wastewater treatment.

Hanna Instruments uses the primary standardAMCO-AEPA-1 to avoid all formazine-relatedproblems. Formazine is a very toxic, unstablesubstance, which requires particular care: itsstandards have to be prepared only a fewminutes before performing the calibration, andcannot be reused because of their short life.Hanna Instruments standards are extremelystable, can be reused, and last up to sixmonths, if free from contamination. HI 93703can be used with both standards.

PRINCIPLE OF OPERATION

* 1 FTU = 1 NTU

HI 93703 has been designed to perform mea-surements according to the ISO 7027 Interna-tional Standard.

The instrument functions by passing a beam ofinfrared light through a vial containing the samplebeing measured. The light source is a High Emission InfraredLED with a wavelength peaking at 890 nm,ensuring that the interference caused by col-ored samples is minimum.

A sensor, positioned at 90° with respect to thedirection of light, detects the amount of lightscattered by the undissolved particles presentin the sample. The microprocessor convertssuch readings into FTU* values.

As noted above, FTU unit is equal to the NTUunit. However, there are other known measure-ment units for turbidity: Jackson Turbidity Unit(JTU) based on the old method of Jackson'scandle, and Silica Unit (mg/L of SiO2). For yourreference the conversion table between thesemeasurement units is shown below:

JTU FTU/NTU SiO2 (mg/L)

JTU 1 19 2.5

FTU/NTU 0.053 1 0.13

SiO2 (mg/L) 0.4 7.5 1

OPERATIONAL GUIDE

To prepare the instrument for takingmeasurements, first install the batteries (seeBattery Replacement section on page 17) andthen turn the instrument on.

To maximize battery-life the meter isautomatically switched off after 5 minutes ofnon-use. To reactivate it, simply press the ON/OFF key.

MEASUREMENT PROCEDURE:

• Turn the meter on bypressing the ON/OFFkey.

• The meter will carryout a self-test display-ing a full set of fig-ures. After the test, the LCD will changeto the measurement mode.

• When the LCD dis-plays “----” the meteris ready to measure.

• Fill a clean cuvet upto one quarter inch(0.5 cm) from its rimwith the thoroughlyagitated sample.

• Allow sufficient time for bubbles to escapebefore securing the cap.Note: do not overtighten the cap.

9

• Wipe the cuvet thor-oughly with a lint-freetissue (HI 93703-70)before inserting intothe measurementcell. The cuvet mustbe completely free offingerprints and otheroil or dirt, particularlyin the area where thelight goes through (ap-proximately the bot-tom 2 cm/1 inch ofthe cuvet).

• Place the cuvet intothe cell and checkthat the notch on thecap is positioned se-cure ly in to thegroove.

• The mark on thecuvet cap shouldpoint towards theLCD.

• Press the READ/⇑key and the LCD willdisplay a blinking“SIP” (Sampling inProcess). The tur-bidity value will ap-pear after approxi-mately 25 seconds.

10* 1 FTU = 1 NTU

• Even though HI93703 covers a very widerange of turbidity values, for very accuratemeasurements of samples exceeding40FTU*, Standard Methods require dilu-tion. In such cases, the correct amount ofHI93703-0 or turbidity-free water to beadded to the sample can be calculatedas follows:

Vos = 3000 / T

where: Vos = volume of sample (mL) to becombined with HI 93703-0 toobtain the final volume of100 mL.

T = HI 93703 reading (exceeding40FTU*)

E.g.: HI 93703 reading = 200 FTU *3000 / 200 = 15 mL (Vos)15 mL (Vos)+85 mL (HI93703-0) = 100

mL

At this point, take a sample of this solutionand measure turbidity. The correct turbidity value of the originalsample will be:

Tn x 100 mL / Vos = Ta

where: Tn = new HI 93703 reading

Ta = actual turbidity value of the original

sample

11

HOW TO ENSURE ACCURATE MEASURE-MENTS

• Each time the cuvet is used, tighten the capto the same degree.

• Discard the sample soon after the reading istaken to avoid permanently clouding the glass.

• All glassware used to contain the standardsand the samples should be maintained clean, washed with HI93703-50 cleaning solutionand rinsed with HI 93703-0 or turbidity-freewater.

• Collect the samples in clean glass or plasticbottles, fit stoppers and perform the analysisquickly. If unavoidable, store the sample ina cool, dark place, but not for longer than 24hours (the sample needs to be kept at roomtemperature prior to the analysis).

• To obtain a representative sample, gently, but thoroughly, mix it before samples aretaken. Do not shake (to prevent air bubbles)and do not let the sample settle.

• It is recommended to monthly calibrate themeter with the supplied HI93703-10 @10FTU* standard or more frequently for great-est accuracy.

• Before inserting vialsinto the instrument, wipe them withHI 93703-70 soft, lint-free tissue. Handle vi-als so that no finger-prints can get on theareas where lightpasses (approximately2 cm/1 inch from thebottom of the vial).

If you experience any problems in taking mea-surements, please contact your dealer or thenearest Hanna Instruments Customer ServiceDepartment.

SOURCES OF INTERFERENCE

• Presence of floating debris and coarse sedi-ments which settle out rapidly will give falsereadings.

• The infrared light source used for HI 93703turbidity meter, according to ISO 7027 Inter-national Standard, can effectively minimizeerrors due to colored dissolved substances. This effect, named "true color", is a commoninterference for most commercially availableinstruments operating in the range of visiblelight.

• Air bubbles and the effect of vibrations thatdisturb the surface of the sample will givefalse results.

• Dirty glassware could also affect readingsalong with scratched or edged vials.

13

CALIBRATION

A monthly calibration is recommended. Tocheck the date of last calibration, simply holdthe DATE/⇒ key down for few seconds.

A more frequent check of the instrument issuggested by using the supplied standard solu-tion.

CALIBRATION PROCEDURE

• Turn the meter on andwait for the display toshow "----".

• Press the CAL keyonce, the "CAL" mes-sage will blink on thedisplay for about 6seconds, then the cali-bration mode stops.

• While the "CAL" mes-sage is still blinking, press CAL again. Theinstrument is now inthe calibration modeand a "CL" will appearon the lower part ofthe display. The dateof calibration can beedited now by simplypressing the DATE/⇒key. To scroll to thecorrect number pressthe READ/⇑ key. Thedefault blinking pa-rameter is the month,on the left hand of thedisplay (MM.DD).

14

• To confirm the dis-played data valuesand to go to the nextstep, press the CALkey once. A blinking"ZERO" message willappear.

• Take the HI 93703-0bottle containing theZERO FTU* Standard(or turbidity-free dilu-tion water) and fill themeasurement cuvet.

Note: in order to minimize any error intro-duced by the cuvet, it is recommended touse, during calibration, the same cuvetyou are going to use to perform the mea-surement.

• Insert the cuvet withthe HI 93703-0 @ZERO FTU* standardsolution (or turbidity-free dilution water)into the measurementcell and press theCAL key. A blinking"SIP" message indi-cates that the instru-ment is performingthe measurement. After approximately50 seconds the in-strument will ask forthe HI93703-10 stan-dard solution @10FTU* by displaying"10.0".

• Repeat the same procedure with HI 93703-10 @10FTU * standard solution.

* 1 FTU = 1 NTU

15

• Insert the cuvet withthe HI 93703-10AMCO-AEPA-1 stan-dard @10 FTU* intothe measurement celland press the CAL keyagain.

• After approximately 50seconds the LCD willdisplay "----".

Now the instrument iscalibrated and readyfor use.

HOW TO ENSURE ACCURATE CALIBRATION

The instructions listed below should be care-fully followed during testing and during calibra-tion:• All glassware that comes into contact with

standards should be maintained clean. Washwith HI93703-50 cleaning solution and rinsewith HI 93703-0 or turbidity free water.

• Rinse the vial twice with 5 ml of the liquid tobe tested. This removes the effect of anyprevious liquid and any dust or foreign matterthat may be present inside. Gently pour theliquid down the side of the vial to reduce airbubbles (no mixing is required when HI 93703-0 and HI 93703-10 AMCO-AEPA-1 standardsare used).

• Before inserting the vialinto the instrument, wipe it with HI93703-70 soft, lint-free tissue.Handle vials so that nofingerprints can get onthe areas where lightpasses (approximately2 cm/1 inch from thebottom of the vial ) .

16

STANDARD SUSPENSION

Presently, there are only two recognized pri-mary standards: AMCO-AEPA-1 and formazine.

Hanna Instruments supplies HI 93703 with theAMCO-AEPA-1 which has a much longer shelflife at all concentrations (approximately sixmonths, if free from contamination). In addition,no special handling or disposal is required anda much higher stability of suspended particleshas been observed.

On the other hand, formazine is a very toxicsubstance, generated by a known carcinogen, its stability is poor (particles flocculate andsettle quickly). Lower concentrations changevalue within a few days or hours after dilutionfrom stock solutions.

The consistency of HI 93703 readings by usingboth standards has been separately estab-lished by Advanced Polymer Systems andHanna Instruments.

Additional documentation about the formazinestandard and more complex calibration proce-dures is available upon request.

VIEWING THE CALIBRATION DATE

• Turn the meter on andwait for the display toshow "----".

• Press and hold theDATE/⇒ key and a"MM.DD" messageappears while the keyis held.

Note: The displayed date is the date that wasinput by the user at the beginning of thelast calibration.

17

BATTERY REPLACEMENT

All components have been selected to mini-mize current drain without compromising func-tionality.

In order to minimize the battery consumption, the meter is equipped with an auto-shut offfunction which switches the meter off after 5minutes of non-use.

The power source is 4 x 1.5V batteries with anexpected life of 60 hours, or over 900 measure-ments.

To always grant accurate measurements, thebatteries are monitored to ensure that readingsare not taken when there is insufficient power .

A "LO BAT" indication will appear on the lowerright hand side of the display when the batteriesare weak and require replacement; at this pointthe instrument is able to perform only 50 moremeasurements.

A "-BA-" indication will appear on the displaywhen the batteries are too weak to performmeasurements; the message appears for a fewseconds, and then the meter will automaticallyswitch off; at this point it is absolutely neces-sary to replace the batteries to use the instru-ment.

18

Battery replacement must only take place in anon hazardous area using the battery typesspecified in this instruction manual (seepage 21).

To install or replace the bat-teries, turn the unit off andunscrew the 2 screws locatedon the back of the batterycover.

Remove the battery coverexposing the battery com-partment.

Place the batteries in thecompartment while payingattention to the polarity.

After the batteries have beeninstalled, replace the bat-tery cover on the back of theinstrument and tighten the 2screws.
