It’s that time of year again. Preparations are well under way for the annual fair. On behalf of the board of directors of the Port Perry Agricultural Society I’d like to welcome you to the 160th Port Perry Fair.Come join us this year as we have some popular returning events and a few changes. Saturday begins with the return of the Port Perry Idol competition. Other afternoon events are the Team K-9 show returning as well as the 4H Lawn Tractor Pulls. Capping off the evening is the ever popular Truck & Tractor Pull. Sunday you can take in the sights & sounds of the fair with family & friends enjoying everything from the exhibits & animals to the Demolition Derby and the Midway. This year’s concert will feature Kira Isabella with opening act and local country girl Leah Daniels from Uxbridge! Monday features the all new expanded Extreme Rodeo! We decided to enhance the Bull Riding so this year you can also enjoy bucking broncos & barrel racing!Thanks to all our volunteers & sponsors, as well as the community, we couldn’t do it without all of you! So come join us this Labour Day Weekend for a fun filled time! See you there!

On behalf of the Township of Scugog Council, it is my plea-sure to welcome you to the Annual Port Perry Agricultural Fair at the Port Perry Fairgrounds.Our community is fortunate to have some of the finest farmland in Durham Region as well as in Southern On-tario. Each year the Port Perry Agricultural Fair showcases and celebrates agriculture in Scugog. Enjoy all that the Port Perry Agricultural Fair has to offer both the traditional agriculture exhibits that provide a win-dow into a farmer’s life and an opportunity to participate in the many family fun activities planned at this year’s fair.I would also like to convey my best wishes to the organizers and all the volunteers for their hard work in planning and hosting such an outstanding annual “end of summer” event.

Entertainment

Leah Daniels is a girl with purpose. In the past year she has spent extensive time writ-ing in Nashville, released two music videos and was nominated for a 2013 CCMA Award for “Interactive Artist Of The Year”. This is all in preparation and support of her upcoming album release in 2014.Leah will be releasing the first single from her upcoming country album early in the new year. Produced by Gavin Brown (Bare-naked Ladies, Three Days Grace, Billy Talent) it is up-tempo, energetic and fresh.The last year has seen Leah write for her new

CD. She found time to release a duet (Where Do I Go) with Ryan Laird, tour with Alan Jackson, again with Ryan, but her main focus was writing great songs and working towards the 2014 and her new music.

Kira Isabella has a decade of experience under her belt performing her brand of up-tempo country music across Canada - an impressive feat since she is just 20 years old. The Ottawa native was rewarded in the fall of 2012 with a Canadian Country Music Award for Rising Star - a highlight for the young songstress, and solidified Kira’s arrival on the country music scene. If the accolades of awards weren’t enough, Kira was added as support for select dates on Carrie Under-wood’s Blown Away Tour in October of 2012 just in time for her debut album release Love

Me Like That, on October 2, 2012. Then in 2013 things really took off when Kira was nominated for a JUNO Award in the Breakthrough Artist category, and just one year after her first CCMA nod, she won the 2013 CCMA for Female Artist of the Year.

ENTRY FEE: A $5 Exhibitor Membership must accompany all entries foradult classes. This membership entitles you to vote at the Annual MeetingHeld on January 17, 2015.

DEADLINE: Entry forms received by August 15, 2014 will have tags mailed.

To entry after August 15, 2014 please contact the Secretary and special arrangements can be made to receive your tags.

1. In all sections, the competition is open to exhibitors from all parts of the world except where indicated in the prize list.2. Any person who knowingly violates the regulations of the Port Perry Agricul- tural Society, or who seeks to obtain a premium by false pretences or by im- proper interference with the judges, shall forfeit any prize money that may be awarded.3. The Directors will avail themselves of the power vested in them by Section 116 of the Agricultural Act, respecting gambling, etc.exhibiting without the per mission of the President and Secretary. Anyone breaking these rules will forfeit all claim upon the Society for premiums awarded.4. The Agricultural Society will not be responsible for any exhibits not picked up at 6:30 pm on the Monday of Labour Day Weekend.5. Exhibitors may send a list of their winnings to the Secretary immediately after the fair.(not compulsory.)6. The Port Perry Agricultural Society reserves the right to interpret its own rules and regulations. Should any dispute or question arise not provided for in the rules and regulations, the decision of the Board of Directors shall be final.7. Exhibitors must provide delivery for articles upon the show grounds and all expenses for transporting to and from the show grounds connected there with.8. While the Directors will take every possible precaution under the circumstances to ensure the safety of the articles sent for exhibition, they wish it to be distinctly understood that the owners themselves must take the risk of exhibiting them. Should any article be accidentally lost, injured or stolen, the directors will give all the assistance in their power toward the recovery of the same but, will not make any payment for the value thereof.9. The Directors reserve the right to pay the prize money on a percentage basis if, through lack of funds, they deem it necessary. This also applies to horse races.10. No prize money will be paid on animals or articles of inferior merit, even though there may be no competition.

NOTE: Stock and all articles must be entered in the name of the bona fide owner. Unless this rule is observed, no premium will be awarded and, if awarded, will be withheld.

RULES AND REGULATIONS• Contestants are required to play three tunes or their choice in the following

order: a waltz, a jig or clog and a reel.• Each contestant is allowed four minutes to complete these three tunes.• Each contestant shall have only one accompanist. The accompanist may chord

the tune or play melody.• A tuned piano is provided.• An accompanist is provided for those contestants who do not wish to provide

their own.• In the event of circumstances beyond the contestant’s control, for example, a

broken string, the contestant is allowed to replay.• Judging is based on time, tone technique and overall accuracy.• The decisions of the judges are final.• Each contestant is eligible to enter one class.• There is no entry fee.• Contestants must pay admission to the Fair.

• Each exhibitor will receive an “Admit One” pass with their entry. Ticket to be surrendered at the gate upon admission to the grounds. RULES AND REGULATIONSEXHIBITING:• All exhibitors must be 18 years of age or older.

JUDGING:• Decisions made by the Judge(s) will be based upon the guidelines suggested

in the Ontario Judging and Exhibiting Standards Horticulture and Floral Design 2003 (OJES) in conjunction with any criteria included in the Show Schedule specific to the Section.

• Criteria in the Show Schedule takes precedence; if there is ambiguity, criteria will defer to OJES and/or the Chairperson.

• Decision(s) of the Judge(s) is/are final. • Name new or unusual flowers/plants if possible (NIP). • Flowers and plants should be free of insects and disease.

CONTAINERS: (glass preferred to avoid spillage) • Shall be clean, clear, plain, uncoloured. • Glass is preferred.

PLANTS & FLOWERS: • Must be grown by the exhibitor for at least 3 months prior to showing. • Plant material for floral design sections may be purchased unless otherwise

stated.

UNIFORMITY: • For sections requesting more than one specimen, uniformity of size, form, colour

& stage of development are important in the judging process. • Collections/Displays & other Sections where different types of plant material are

requested may be exempt (at the discretion of the Judge(s)).

ACCESSORIES: • Definition: Accessories are inorganic (were never living) objects used to enhance

an exhibit; the display/design should be able to stand on its own without the accessories.

• Permitted in Display & Floral Design Sections unless otherwise specified.

FLOATING IN WATER SPECIMENS: • Container should be only slightly larger than the bloom. • Specimen should not touch the sides nor the bottom of the container; remove

as much stem as possible. • Avoid water droplets on the specimen (transport separately).

GROOMING: • Grooming may affect the placement. • Remove spent blooms, ragged leaves, water stains, critters, dust & other “for-

eign” & unsightly material. • Plant/foliage polish is NOT permitted; use warm water for grooming.

MEASUREMENTS: • All measurements (specimens & Floral Design) include the container. • Measurements, where applicable, are taken from the show table top. • Stem length is measured from the surface of the table top to the upper tip of

the specimen or along the progressive length to the end of the stem/bloom for curved stems).

• Bloom size is determined from the largest diameter, in any direction, petal/sepal tip to tip.

• Pot sizes are measured across the diameter from top inside edge to top inside edge.

• Floral Design exhibits are measured in every direction, height, width, & diagonal from the table top & include the container(s)/tray & any accessories.

STAGING/PLACING EXHIBITS:• Show Chair and assistants reserve the right to determine the final staging/place-

ment of the exhibits. • Some exhibits may be moved due to space considerations and/or to allow all

exhibits fair advantage; this includes Floral Design entries. Every effort will be made to ensure the integrity of each entry.

• Final decisions on placement of exhibits rests with the Show Chair.

recipe For Mom’s Apple Pie in a Jar:

Makes about six 8-ounce (250 ml) jars3/4 cup raisins or dried cranberries 175 ml6 cups chopped cored peeled Granny Smith 1.5 lor other tart applesGrated zest and juice of 1 lemon1 cup unsweetened apple juice 250 ml1 package (1.75 oz/49 to 57 g) regular 1powdered fruit pectin9 cups granulated sugar 2.25 l1 tsp ground cinnamon 5 ml1/2 tsp ground nutmeg 2 ml1. Prepare canner, jars and lids.• In a food processor fitted with a metal blade, pulse raisins until finely chopped. Set aside. • In a large, deep stainless steel saucepan, combine apples and lemon zest and juice. Bring to a boil over high heat, stirring frequently. Reduce heat and boil gently, stir-ring occasionally, until apples begin to soften, about 10 minutes. Remove from heat and whisk in pectin until dissolved. Stir in raisins. Return to high heat and bring to a boil, stirring frequently. Add sugar all at once and return to a full rolling boil, stirring constantly. Boil hard, stirring constantly, for 1 minute. Remove from heat and stir in cinnamon and nutmeg. Skim off foam. • Ladle hot jam into hot jars, leaving 1/4 inch (0.5 cm) headspace. Remove air bubbles and adjust headspace, if necessary, by adding hot jam. Wipe rim. Center lid on jar. Screw band down until resistance is met, then increase to fingertip-tight.

Ontario Association of Agriculture Societies (O.A.A.S) Champion Quilt Competi-tion (Hand Quilted)The exhibitor of the Grand Champion Quilt at the Port Perry Agricultural Fair is eli-gible to enter the quilt in the O.A.A.S. Competition. To enter this competition, the Grand Champion Quilt must compete in the District 4 Competition. The first prize quilt from the District Competition is then entered in the O.A.A.S. Competition, which is held at the O.A.A.S. Annual convention in Toronto in February.If the Exhibitor wins the Grand Champion at more than one Fair, the exhibitor must consider the Agriculture Society nearest his/her home fair as the one from which the quilt be sent to the District Competition. In this case, the Reserve Grand Champion Quilt from the second fair then becomes eligible for the District Com-petition.• Entry quilts must be minimum 324” measured around the perimeter. • The entry judged “Best of Show” at the February Convention will be declared the

ONTARIO ASSOCIATION OF AGRICULTURE SOCIETIES CHAMPIONSHIP QUILT. • A $500 Grand prize will be awarded and the exhibitor retains ownership of the

RULES AND REGULATIONS• Open to all Elementary School children. No entry fee at all this year. Pre-regis-

tration is highly recommended. Grades listed refer to the grade the child com-pleted in June 2014, not the grade they will be entering in September 2014.

• High school students are only eligible to enter Class 34.• Send completed Entry Form to the Secretary, Box 401, Port Perry, ON, L9L1A4.

Entry tags will be mailed upon receipt of entry form if received by August 15. After August 15, arrangements can be made to pick up tags.

• One entry per person, per class section. Entries must be new work made since last fair.

• Entries will be accepted on the Friday of Labour Day Weekend from 4 pm to 7 pm, and Saturday of Labour Day Weekend, from 8 am to 10:30 am, at the east door of the Junior Fair building. All entries must be left until 5:30 pm on Monday of Labour Day Weekend. The Port Perry Agricultural Society will not be respon-sible for any exhibits not picked up by 6:30 pm.

• All entries are left at the owner’s risk but will be protected as much as possible by Fair management.

• Any person found guilty of wilfully breaking the rules of the Fair, shall not receive a prize and will be barred from exhibiting for one year.

• Fourth prizes are only awarded if there are more than six entries in any one sec-tion. Fourth prize is NOT awarded on specials.

• Original poems, stories and essays will be judged using the following criteria: 1)Content 2)Grammar and Spelling 3)Penmanship - worth 5 points each

NOTE TO PARENTS:The exhibitor must do all work. Parents are urged to encourage their children but to allow them to complete the work themselves.

Helpful Hints for Exhibitors• Vegetables and flowers are judged on quality and uniformity.• Do not peel or wash Onions, just remove rough outer skin.• Leave 1.2 cm tops on carrots, beets and onions• Leave calyx attached on Tomatoes.• Leave stem attached on Pumpkins and Squash.• Leave 1.2 cm stems on Peppers.• 1/3 of husk and silk removed on Corn, kernels well filled.• Leave foliage and a reasonable length of stem on all flower specimens.• When the list indicates number of blooms, that also includes buds showing colour.• The buds may be left in a spray.• Flowers and vegetables should be in good condition and free of insects.• Houseplants must be grown by exhibitor (minimum of 3 months).• A Gladiola spike should be measured approximately 50 cm from bottom Floret

Poster Rules and Regulations:1. “Promoting Your Fair” – Name and date of fair must be clearly shown on poster. 2. Must be hand drawn. 3. Poster size: Minimum – approximately 22cm X 28cm, without border

Maximum –approximately 28cm X 44cm, without border 4. Each entry must be centered on a CARDSTOCK or BRISTOL BOARD exposing

a 5. 5cm border on all four sides. 5. Name of fair, district #, contact person, owner of poster, complete mailing ad-

dress must be clearly labeled on the back of each entry. 6. The winning poster from each class at each fair will be eligible to enter the

district competition. District winners are eligible to enter at the provincial com-petition.

7. Limited to ONE entry per class per DISTRICT. Each district to hold a competition prior to annual Convention.

8. Entries to be delivered to the Ballroom on Friday morning of the convention between 7:30am – 8:30am. Judging will commence at 9:00am. Posters must be picked up between 5:00pm and 5:30pm Friday evening.

RULES AND REGULATIONS• Open to all 4-H clubs in the Durham West 4-H Association area.• Exhibits are to be on a topic from one of the 4-H projects offered in the fall or

winter of 2013 or spring or summer of 2014• Exhibits should include a poster stating the title of the exhibit and the club

name• Space allotted for each exhibit will be a maximum of one metre by one metre• Exhibits will be set up Saturday of the Labour Day Weekend between 9 am and

11 am and are to be removed by 5:30 pm on the Monday. The Fair Board will not be responsible for exhibits not picked up

• No entry fee is required• Entry shall be made to, Secretary, Port Perry Agricultural Society, Box 401, Port

Perry, Ontario L9L 1A4 (905 985 0962)• $20 will be paid to each club exhibiting a worthy entry. To receive the prize
