Asparagus Festival Volunteers Needed
Just how lucky can we get? People come from all over the West
Coast to attend the Asparagus Festival, and it takes place right in
our own backyard! We will have spectacular entertainment, fun for
the kids, and the best food you can imagine at this three-day festival
that has something
for everyone.
However, be assured that the most fun will definitely be at the
Chamber’s Pasta and Ice Cream Booth in Asparagus Alley! There is
still time to join us as a volunteer to help prepare the mouthwatering
pasta dish and scoop the delicious ice cream. Not only will you have
a chance to make some great new friends, but you will also help
raise funds for a variety of Chamber programs. A few hours of your
time on April 15, 16 or 17 will get you free admission to the festival,
a complimentary lunch, and a free shuttle bus ride from Delta
College on Saturday and Sunday. Asparagus Alley volunteers must
be over 18 years of age this year. To volunteer, please call Tortellini
Timm or Angel Hair Heidi at 209.547.2770.
2011 Golf Tournament
The good news is that our 30th Annual Golf Tournament is
not yet sold out! However, we suggest you sign up your foursome
before it does. Brookside Country Club will host our day on the
greens on April 4, beginning with registration at 10 a.m., lunch at
11 a.m., and a shotgun start at noon. After the tournament, we will
have an awards reception honoring the top players of the day.
We still have some terrific sponsorship packages available,
which offer high visibility at this signature event. You may also
join us as a $150 tee or green sponsor, or as a $700 sponsor, which
includes signage on a tee or green and registration for a foursome.
Single player registrations are available for $160.
If you are looking for an easy way to highlight your business
products or services, consider donating a prize for our post-
tournament raffle. It is an ideal way to market your business to
other high profile business people supporting and participating in
our tournament.
Eventsby: Heidi Altamirano
So make at least one of your Monday’s in April a fun one by joining
us at Brookside Country Club. Can’t wait for your invitation to
arrive in the mail? Just give Timm a call at 209.547.2960, and he
will be happy to sign you up. Also, call today to have a spectacular

From Your President...by: Rick Goucher
Having just returned from the “3rd Annual
Lunch at the Landfill”, I thought it would be
a good time to write about the benefits of
going green. Members should be proud of the
Green Team San Joaquin, and should request a
REACON (Recycling Energy Air Conservation)
visit. I had a REACON visit to one of the
properties I manage and was amazed at the
amount of energy-efficient projects that can
be done at your business for little or no cost.
Even for the items that had a cost, most will
pay for themselves within two years. I learned
a couple valuable tips at a recent Green Team
meeting. Using recycled paint actually costs
less than the cost of using manufactured paint,
and therefore I have directed my painting
contractors to use only recycled paints in buildings
I manage. Also, we reuse as much as we can of the
existing components from our suites when they
are re-leased to new tenants. This not only saves
money, it also reduces the amount of construction
materials in the landfills.
Other things you can be doing include taking
the nasty Styrofoam peanuts that your shipments
are packed in back to one of the many shipping
centers in town. They are happy to take them as
this once again saves them money and diverts
them from the landfill. Call Frank Ferral or Blain
Bibb and they can send out a team with many
energy saving ideas. I would like to thank both
Frank and Blain for making the Green Team an
awarding program of your Chamber.
PORT CALL Greater Stockton Chamber of Commerce5
From Your CEO...by: Doug Wilhoit
It was once said that “A community is like a ship; everyone
ought to be prepared to take the helm.” Albert Schweitzer said
“Man must cease attributing his problems to his environment,
and learn again to exercise his will – his personal responsibility.”
That is how we operate here at your 110 year old Greater Stockton
Chamber of Commerce. We do not sit back and rest on our
laurels, or say it is someone else’s job or responsibility to make
things better. We are proactive, and ask our membership and the
whole community to do so also.
Forbes knows the Chamber is in the business of promoting
and protecting Stockton and San Joaquin County, so they never
respond to our dissatisfaction in their rankings. BUT they
must respond to Stocktonians like David Garcia, Greg Basso,
Barbara Daly, and Maestro Peter Jaffe who let Forbes know-in no
uncertain written words and a YouTube presentation-how lame
Forbes rankings are. I hope you read Mr. Garcia’s letter in the
Record, and go to www.stocktonchamber.org to see Mr. Basso’s
and Mrs. Daly’s YouTube offering. Then send it to all those on
your email list. Take that Forbes!
We have a new Membership Salesperson, Matthew (Matt)
Anderson, and he has very quickly embraced this Chamber.
In just a few short weeks he brought a great deal of new and
exciting ideas on how to serve our members, and have more of
the business community join us as we do the work of bettering
this entire community. Do not hesitate to contact Matt to see what
great opportunities the Chamber offers, and also help him build
up our membership so we can serve you even better.
In each of my articles, I have continually recommended to
you to visit our websites, www.stocktonchamber.org and
www.visitstockton.org, to find out what is happening in this great
community for you, your family, friends and employees to enjoy.
You will discover that there is so much to do! When was the last
time you went to the Stockton Civic Theatre? A group of us went
on Saturday, February 5, and truly enjoyed a most wonderful
evening of fun and talented entertainment when we saw “Run
For Your Wife.” How about the Haggin Museum, the many art
galleries that have wonderful local artists on display, a Thunder
game, the Cineplex, the many restaurants with such a diverse
menu selection that proudly shows off our wonderful ethnic
diversity that makes up Stockton, or so many other things to do
year-round! Please check out both websites so you can plan ahead
to enjoy some wonderful experiences.
Our Chamber mixers are a great way to meet other business
people, share your product, and learn about them. Each host
business is a member of the Chamber, and you get a chance to
socialize and meet great people.
Our annual golf tournament, April 4 at Brookside Golf &
Country Club, is also a must-attend Chamber event. Put together
a winning team (well maybe second place team, since either your
Chamber President Rick Goucher or board members Dan Keyser
and Ren Nosky will be keeping the score for our team) and enjoy
a day of golf, fun, food and friendship. Contact Heidi or Timm to
reserve your spot, and sponsor a hole or two for a yearly sellout of
golfers and fellow business people.

Leadership Stocktonby: Timm Quinn
Leadership Stockton: Law Enforcement Session
Leadership Level Sponsor: Financial Center Credit Union
Special Thanks to: San Joaquin County Sheriff ’s Office
Each year, the Leadership Stockton class looks forward to the
Law Enforcement session. This session gives the class a glimpse of
the various entities working together to make Stockton a safe place
to live, work and play. Though the day was full, the information
was valuable, and the class left with a greater understanding of our
local justice system.
The day began with a warm welcome to the Sheriff ’s John
Zunino Operations Center from Sheriff Steve Moore (Leadership
Stockton, Class of 1990), immediately followed by Police Chief
Blair Ulring (Leadership Stockton, Class of 2004). Sheriff Moore
provided an overview of the Sheriff Department’s operation of the
jail facility, and a glimpse at the myriad of other duties that fall
under his department. The class was also brought up to speed on
the need of a new jail facility. Chief Ulring spoke about crime and
the Stockton Police Department’s efforts to combat this hot issue.
He provided great statistics, and encouraged the public to become
more aware and involved in the process.
Following the briefing from the Sheriff and Police Chief,
the class was educated in “Gangs and Guns” by Detective
Paul Gutierrez of the Stockton Police Department. Detective
Gutierrez’s presentation was Gangs 101 for most of the class,
providing a visual guide to identifying many Stockton gangs and
the gang culture. Always a favorite with the class, this topic can
be chilling and provides an unfiltered look at Stockton gangs.
After lunch came the jail tour, what many consider the
highlight of the day. During the 2 hour tour, the class toured
the French Camp facility visiting the intake, women’s area,
men’s area, administrative segregation, the medical clinic, the
communications area, and a special treat, the gun range.
Many folks were involved in the success of the Law
Enforcement session. A big THANK YOU goes to the following:
Sheriff Moore, Police Chief Ulring, and Detective Gutierrez.
Also, thanks to Sheriff Moore for the generous use of his
facilities and his very helpful staff, especially Officer Kim de la
Cruz (Leadership Stockton, Class of 2008) for coordinating
the jail tour.

We Help You Succeed
I would like to take the opportunity to introduce myself to all of you! I am Matt Anderson, your new Chamber Membership Sales Representative,
and I am excited about the opportunity to work with the historic and successful Greater Stockton Chamber of Commerce.
I worked with the Salt Lake City Chamber of Commerce for several years—during the build up and through the 2002 Olympics—and I learned that a membership in any chamber is like a gym
membership: you can’t sit home and expect to see results! You need to get out and get involved to make those networking relationships happen.
I have had the opportunity to own a company, have worked for large corporations, and everything in between. This experience has helped me see and understand the value that the Greater Stockton Chamber of Commerce can provide to a company and to the entire community, with so many of its successful and award-winning programs that can only help you succeed.
I look forward to meeting and working with you to build your business and membership in the Greater Stockton Chamber of Commerce.

Community Fuels: Example of a Successful Green Business
By Matthew Andrews
COVER STORY
There’s no denying that “green” has become one of
the biggest buzzwords of the past decade. As an ever-
larger segment of the nation’s consumers are looking to
purchase from green companies, a niche market has
developed offering environmentally sensitive products
and services.
However, while green appears to be the new
black, companies that truly embrace green principles
into their business practices are few and far between.
According to Blain Bibb, CEO of ServiceMaster Building
Maintenance and the Chairman of Greater Stockton
Chamber of Commerce’s Green Team San Joaquin, this
is because most businesses lack an understanding of the
economics of “going green.”
“A lot of people have a misconception that
being green costs money,” he explains, “but there
are plenty of ways to save money and be
environmentally friendly.”
As a way to both
encourage local
businesses to
embrace cost-
effective green
developments
and draw
new developments from green companies, the Greater Stockton
Chamber of Commerce created Green Team San Joaquin in
2006. The organization, which operates as a combined effort
between public and private entities, and the community at
large, hopes to make green synonymous with good business.
As a result of its efforts, Stockton has become a magnet for
green businesses.
One of the shining examples of how environmentalism
can be profitable is Community Fuels. Founded in 2005,
Community Fuels is a large-scale producer of biodiesel, an
alternative fuel made from renewable resources that reduces
the emission of greenhouse gasses and other pollutants. The
company, which is based in Encinitas, California, operates
a production and research facility at the Port of Stockton, a
location that was decided upon after an extensive study of
75 potential locations. “We did an exhaustive search while
considering an array of different criteria,” says CEO and
cofounder Lisa Mortenson, “and we determined that Stockton
was a good place to be.”
The Stockton facility, which operates with a staff of 10
full-time employees, can produce up to 10 million gallons
of biodiesel per year. Once the fuel has been produced, the
company utilizes Stockton’s advantage as a transportation
hub to transport their product to national and international
markets, where it is mixed with petroleum diesel at different
levels to create a biodiesel blend.
The fuel manufactured by Community Fuels boasts
many environmental benefits over traditional petroleum.
Biodiesel is made in a sustainable process from renewable
resources, which includes vegetable oils, animal fats, and
PORT CALL Greater Stockton Chamber of Commerce15
waste products. Depending on how much is mixed with
petroleum, the resulting fuel reduces the amount of numerous
pollutants expelled into the atmosphere up to somewhere
between 50 and 100 percent. The
result is cleaner air and healthier
lives. Furthermore, biodiesel
accomplishes these benefits while
still providing similar levels of engine performance
and an increased level of lubricity, which reduces
wear and tear on engines. Biodiesel is also
compatible with most diesel engines, meaning
a biodiesel blend of up to 20 percent may be
used in most diesel engines without any sort of
modification or conversion.
Mortenson explains that Community Fuels is adamant
about not being cornered into a niche market because of its
environmental benefits, instead viewing these benefits as one of
many factors that make its product commercially viable. “We’re
not a boutique or a cottage industry,” says Mortenson. “We
produce bulk volumes of fuel of exceptional quality.”
In addition to having a positive effect on the environment,
Community Fuels also has an impact on the local economy.
By producing biodiesel in California, local consumers can
reduce their dependence on fuels produced outside of the area.
Furthermore, the money spent on fuels produced in other
countries or states can now be spent in California, causing more
dollars to stay local. This is a major benefit to San Joaquin
County, as the Stockton production facility provides a source
of jobs, tax dollars, and other indirect economic benefits. “It’s
not just about our full-time employees,” Mortenson says of the
company’s impact on the local economy, “but there were jobs
created through the engineering, permitting and construction
of the facility. And the fuel produced and sold provides a
source of tax revenue. It keeps money circulating in the
San Joaquin area.”
Mortenson also adds that with the
demand for biodiesel rising steadily, the
company has plans to ramp up production.
Community Fuels recently received a
notice of a proposed award for a $2 million
grant through the California Energy
Commission. These funds are
expected to support the installation
of new equipment and expanded
capabilities. As a result, Community Fuels plans to hire new
employees in the near future, and the resulting increase in
production capabilities will create an
economic benefit that will ripple out
into the rest of the community.
For Bibb, the coming expansion
at Community Fuels is a testament
to how local companies can be
green while at the same time being
profitable and efficient. “They’re
finding ways to bring alternative
fuels into the marketplace,” he
says, “and they’re hiring,
which is a good thing in
this market.”
For companies with their eye on environmental stewardship, Stockton is a great place.
continued on page 17
MARCH2011 16www.stocktonchamber.org
www.visitstockton.orgPhotography by: Arturo Vera, Arturo Vera Photography
Bibb explains that Community Fuels is just one of several green
businesses that is thriving in Stockton. He notes that the city’s
focus on developing a green economy, its strategic location as a
transportation hub, and its many other benefits are attracting all
types of green companies, from electric vehicle manufacturers
to biomass facilities. Furthermore, it’s encouraging local
businesses to adopt environmentally friendly practices as a cost-
effective way to do business. The net result of these changes
includes jobs being created, businesses making profits, and the
overall economy becoming healthier. And for Bibb, the future is
only looking brighter.
“In this economy, people are look for places where it’s easy
to do business,” Bibb explains. “For companies with their eye on
environmental stewardship, Stockton is a great place.”

CEO Cont’d from pg. 6
Back up to my first paragraph, I know I speak about this a lot,
but it is during tough times when the “tough get going”. We have
an opportunity to come out of the serious times we are in right
now if we all work together. I know the Stockton City Council and
our City Manager, Bob Deis, had a very hard-working and soul-
searching retreat, which was probably one of the most important
of all times to set the course toward recovery. We all need to
understand the daunting task we all have, and not point fingers
but join hands, hearts and our brains to come out the other side of
this dark tunnel where the light is showing at the end (as it always
does). It will be bright and warm sunshine when we exit the other
end. Together we can do anything!
One last quote from Samuel Smiles: “The spirit of self-help
is the root of all genuine growth in the individual; and, exhibited
in the lives of many, it constitutes the true source of national vigor
and pride [may I add community pride]. Help from without is
often enfeebling in its effects, but help from within invariably
invigorates.” Please think about this for a moment and then
resolve to make Stockton, your home, a better place to live, work,
play and pray!
