CITY SETS NEW SPORT MILESTONE

Peter.Nazareth and [email protected]

The city’s bleary-eyed Sunday morn-ing lethargy was blown away by a rush of endorphins as Amdavadis thronged the Sabarmati riverfront

at Vallabh Sadan for the Times of India-Adani Rain Miler. Over 1,700 runners gath-ered from 5:30 am onwards to compete in various categories of the Rain Miler compe-tition. With participants ranging from school kids to high-flying executives and retired senior citizens, the lure of the mile was uniformly strong. Starting at dawn with the competition for junior categories, the mood and participation levels rose along with the sun.

“This miler is a great idea because it opens up the joys of running to people in all stages of preparation — from novices to veteran distance running enthusiasts. This is the best way to promote running and a healthy lifestyle,” said Sharad Shukla, an Isro employee who was accompanying his son at the run.

The perfectly-organized race employed smart technology to keep things going smoothly. RFID tags on runners’ bibs and reader units at the start, turnaround point and at the finish line made sure that runners’ time and starts were logged without hassle or confusion and without any errors. There also were quadcopter-mounted cameras keeping an eye on proceedings along the one mile.

The various categories — like the separate ones for couples, families and corporates — kept things interesting for all runners. Milers proudly com-memorated their finishes by get-ting themselves photographed beside banners proclaiming: ‘I ran my fastest mile today.’

“We have come here in force. There are about 30 of us from our office. This has defi-nitely given our organization awareness about fitness and is promoting a sense of camara-derie,” said Harshvardhan Zala, 34, a designer with a city-based corporate. As the morning drew on, passersby and the Sunday morning traffic began to be drawn to the riverfront, partly because of the DJ belting out hot tracks.

The categories that had a later start, like the family category and corporates, had a healthy number of spectators waving at runners and yelling words of encouragement.
