DIRECTOR’S WELCOME

We have cooked up a huge pot of energising and inspiring music, words, and stories as a feast of soul food. This brew must hit the spot, to attract so many thousands annually to our great gathering – the Woodstock of the West. Our festival is testimony to the magical power of live music performance. It is though, an ephemeral gathering, magically appearing and dissolving away like clouds on the breeze; like a huge swarm of bees in a garden, gathering the pollen for the secret life of plants. We are reminded that we would take bees and music for granted, only at our peril.

We applaud you for supporting the cultural experience that “The Port Fairy Project” presents; for finding the true value of this music and the honeyed essence of community. As a social project, The Gross Happiness Index swings into the red-hot zone; the cultural capital heads skywards, while the world economic models tumble in the tides. Pete Seeger’s peace song comes to mind and the words - “When will they ever learn?”.

We have hosted an ever-growing list of international artist luminaries since our 1977 beginnings. This year we welcome Buffy Sainte-Marie, Sinéad O’Connor, Richard Thompson, and Charlie Musselwhite. Along with all our artists, we are inspired by their creative works and honour their enrichment of our lives.

Sinéad, O’Connor joins the welcome stream of wonderful musicians to visit us from Ireland. We are ever-ready to celebrate the deep roots of Irish and Celtic culture in this region – the Green Rainbow at the end of a Great Ocean Road. We also feature the amazing players of the Heartstring Quartet, Sharon Shannon Band, and the incredible fiddler, Martin Hayes with The Gloaming – a truly groundbreaking ensemble.

Charlie Musselwhite is rightly regarded as one of the great exponents of the blues harmonica. Richard Thompson returns, for the first time Downunder with his wonderful band. The incredible Buffy Sainte-Marie brings a breathtaking legacy of songs and a lifetime of activism for her first nation people and world peace. Buffy and Sinéad are cultural activists armed with words and music.

These truly inspirational acts are noted among our 118 acts and we applaud them all for weaving the magic and the muse with us over these days. Together they will perform at over 472 events, 317 concerts, 38 workshops and 20 venues over 4 days – but who’s counting? Have a great time and we wish you a wonderful festival.

PRESIDENT’S WELCOME

In 1991, the Port Fairy Folk Festival Committee commenced a long journey to continue the success of our folk festival. Twenty-four years later, we are still at the forefront of folk festivals within Australia and a “must attend” event on the musical calendar. We are here to enjoy the 39th festival this year and looking forward to the 40th festival extravaganza in 2016.

As part of our journey, the Committee has been fortunate to have many great members. This year, the Australia Day awards presented an OAM to Margaret Whitehead for her services to the community of Port Fairy. Margaret has been a long time committee member and has been in charge of recruiting many of the volunteers that assist our event over the weekend. Her decades of service to the festival and many other voluntary organisations in the district made her a standout choice for the award. Our former treasurer, Graeme Kershaw, received the Port Fairy Belfast Lions Club James O’Neill Memorial Award for community service. Graeme was treasurer from 1994 to 2012 and also chairperson of our Grants Committee, which contributes many dollars to clubs, charities and special projects throughout Port Fairy and district. Both of these people have given 1000s of hours to many organisations and our thanks and congratulations go out to them.

Our committee has also changed with the departure of Ian Wood from the role of Ticketing Portfolio and Executive Team member. Ian’s contribution will always be remembered as it was his research and enthusiasm that brought the festival on-line ticketing through Trybooking. His marketing and media input, together with special projects, ie the Reardon Theatre refurbishment, will leave a lasting memory. Thank you Ian for your

contribution and support. Ian will not be lost to the festival family as he has offered to help in future years and play a role with special projects.

There are various changes that we have made this 39th year to allow a smooth approach to the 40th.

» We have purchased more chairs that will be used to increase the seating in Stages 1, 2, 3 and the Lighthouse.

» Last year, we experimented with Stage 6 (now known as Stage 5) as a seated venue, and the response back to us has been positive.

» The Lighthouse has become a music-only venue, with the food moved into the food court and the liquor licence moved to the back of Stage 2 – which will also comprise a small outdoor licenced area. You will be able to purchase drink tickets for beer and wine in the Stage 2 Bar and the Shebeen Bar, which can be used in both venues. The Stage 2 Bar will have restricted opening hours.

» INSTRUMENTworX has been moved closer to the Cricket Club rooms (FOLKworX venue) and some food and craft stalls have been shifted to give a better “flow and feeling” to The Arena.

» The Folk Mass will be held at St John’s Church this year due to renovations at St Patrick’s. Check the program for the other masses being held.

» The Children’s Area at Stage 6 is called The Family Folk Circus this year.Down the street, there is also the new Fiddlers Green Stage that has been built by a volunteer brigade under the tutelage of Jack Smits. The stage has been a huge success for Port Fairy’s other festivals and our thanks to all the helpers in the construction and planning of the Stage. The idea was a joint concept with Moyne Shire Council and Moyneyana Festival committee.

These changes are experiments to make the festival more accessible. However, we will appreciate your constructive comments.

So what is happening this year at the festival? The music program is amazing – Jamie and the programing crew have put together a package that you would normally dream about. The artists will want to attend the other performances!! All ages have been catered for, so I do not expect to hear of anyone being disappointed.

Staying connected at this year’s Port Fairy Folk Festival will be easier, with Telstra is offering visitors to the festival with free Wi-Fi and improved mobile coverage. Six Wi-FI hotspots will be installed across the venue, offering free Wi-Fi to any Wi-Fi enabled device and for Telstra customers, a Cell on Wheels will be in place to make call and texting a breeze.

Once again, our contributions to the many volunteer organisations within the Port Fairy district have been outstanding. Of particular mention is the donation of $100,000 to assist the Marine Rescue crew to purchase a new vessel to assist in the many ocean rescues that are constant along our coast. Over the years we have made major contributions to our local SES, CFA and Surf Club for essential vehicles and equipment. In one sense, we hope that the emergency equipment is never utilised. However, many people fail to adhere to the many safety requirements both at sea and on our roads. So when you leave Port Fairy after yet another great weekend, please think of others on the roads. We have lost members of the “festival family” over the last 12 months through illness and accident and they will be in our thoughts during the weekend.

On a brighter note, we are planning events for the 40th festival and this Program Book has an article on how you can assist. We have a small, dedicated sub-committee to oversee the activities and we welcome novel ideas. Any suggestions are welcome.

On an even brighter note, Brenda and I married after last year’s festival so if you see her dancing and celebrating too much, please remind her that she is now the President’s wife.

To the committee, Jamie, all our hard working staff (please read their names in the program) and all our contractors, volunteers, photographers and supporters, we do run a great festival so be proud of what we do for Port Fairy. As Margaret said, “Port Fairy was a standout example of a town that helped itself”.

GREETINGS FROM THE FESTIVAL AMBASSADOR

Welcome or welcome back to the Port Fairy Folk Music Festival. The 39th! My how time flies. Once again Jamie McKew, the Festival Director has done a mighty job putting together a program of fantastic Australian and International acts playing folk musics of all sorts. I use the plural because it is one of the best ways to answer that age-old question; “What is folk music?”

My answer is usually along the lines of; “Music made by and for folks”. (A bit flippant, I know, but ambassadors are very busy people.) More accurately, I think folk music actually includes concepts like cultural relevance and accessibility, traditional formatting and emotional connectivity. All of those notions have geographic, demographic and racial variations, but while Australian folk music is nothing like, say, Sudanese folk music, Australians can still recognise it is folk. If you get to see Ajak Kwai this weekend you will see what I mean.

Each year the township of Port Fairy welcomes the thousands of Folk Music fans and performers who make the journey to experience our Festival. A very large number of the townsfolk participate as volunteers, ensuring we visitors have a great time, and they deserve our gratitude.

A quick quiz question, and no asking Dr Google: If you were 6 when Buffy Sainte-Marie first appeared on Sesame Street, how old are you now? 45!

This is the first chance I have had to see her in concert and I’ve been a fan for more than 45 years.

VENUE ADMISSION

Patience is a virtue at festivals. Seating at venues in the Arena is limited. Some popular shows can reach capacity and we will put up House Full signs. If you are unable to see a show of first choice, the upside may well be new discoveries at the next stage and a great tale to share later on.

VENUE SEATING + CHAIR GUIDE

Most stages have grassed surfaces and patrons usually bring low chairs and rugs to sit on at the front sections of the venues. All festivals seem to have ‘issues’ concerning seating and no one solution works for all situations. If we all do our best, things should work out. It helps to be considerate and make friends.

It can take a while to settle into the festival groove so it will help a lot to check through these festival essentials to make the most of the weekend. A festival is always a busy time, full of discovery, inspiration, energy, fun and music. It’s also a time to share with friends and the festival community. We hope you have an exciting and memorable festival.

Our venues will be colour marked to designate seating arrangements:

WHITE SECTION

The front of venues will be marked white for ground seating and low-height chairs only. The chairs in this area must have maximum measurements of 20cm seat height and 65cm back height.

RED SECTION

The area marked red will be for higher chairs. NB: no higher chairs in Stage 3. This area will always be located towards the rear of the venue. No chairs or seating is permitted in the aisles or along the sides of the venue.

We ask everyone to cooperate and support this seating arrangement, and to consider the comfort and enjoyment of your fellow festival attendees.

SEATING ARRANGEMENTS FOR STAGES 1 - 6

Stages 1, 2, & 4 — have no fixed seats. Follow the chair code as shown and marked on the venue’s grassed surface.

Stage 3 — has approximately half fixed seats. No high festival chairs permitted. (Store at the Wall of Chairs).

Stage 5 — low chairs permitted. BYO chairs required for this venue.

Stage 6 — is a fully fixed seated venue

AISLES

The aisles are only for moving in and out of venues, so please do not block them off. Please restrict movements to and from seats to the breaks in the concerts. Do not move in and out of the venue during the performance of an item.

GREAT WALL OF CHAIRS

A designated ‘lock up’ point for festival chairs, located near the Campbell St entrance. BYO lock.

THE ‘PORT FAIRY SHUFFLE’

This is a ‘take five moment’ when the concert announcer may ask the audience to stand up, stretch the limbs and shuffle to close gaps and create more room during popular concerts. We appreciate your generosity and cheerful cooperation in this very helpful and healthy activity. You will live longer!

SPACES

Reserving spaces for extended periods before and between concerts is not permitted. Please take your belongings with you when leaving the venue for longer than a short break. Unattended rugs and chairs may be removed to Lost Property by venue staff.

DANCING

Dancing is encouraged only when venue space permits, and only where it does not obstruct the view of seated patrons. Dancers, please be considerate of the seated audience and dance at the sides.

NO BACKSTAGE ACCESS

Backstage is only accessible to artists and festival staff on duty.

VENUE ANNOUNCEMENTS

At the beginning of performances, particularly in Stages 1 and 3, MCs will explain the seating and chair requirements with a video presentation on the large screens, and seek everyone’s cooperation.

FESTIVAL ATMOSPHEREHere at the Port Fairy Folk Festival, you’ll be surrounded by colourful sights, delicious smells, and a great sense of fun! Here are some of the features that help to create this magical experience.

FESTIVAL ART AND CRAFT FAIR

The highly-popular and wonderfully colourful craft stalls gather in Port Fairy from around the country and are spread around the Festival at Sackville Street, Bank Street, Railway Place and opposite Railway Place at Glaxo Green, as well as in the Festival Arena.

THE FREE FESTIVAL OF THE STREETS

Out of the Festival Arena and around the town, the streets are bustling with buskers, street performers, music and fun to be had by all. Aside from the ticketed venues, there are the Fiddlers Green stage, Railway Stage, Fringe Festival at the Surf Club, blackboard sessions at the RSL and more!

INSTRUMENT MAKERS

Also in the Festival Arena, The INSTRUMENTworX Exhibition and the Australian Made and Played concerts are a great way to acquaint yourself with the amazing artistry that goes into instrument making, as well as giving an opportunity to purchase a unique instrument directly from the maker. MERCH + MUSIC SHOP

We know you all love to take some of the music you’ve heard home from the Festival. The Festival-run CD shop (between Stage 1 and 2) has a huge range of CDs and merchandise from this year’s artists. CD Signings occur immediately following performances on Stages 1, 2, 3 & 4. There you can meet and have your albums signed by your favourite acts; check blackboards for artists & times.

FOOD FESTIVAL

Food stalls in the Festival Arena provide a tantalising aroma that will make your mouth water and draw you in. Whether feeding a family on a budget, or seeking out that special treat, there is so much on offer. Your taste buds can explore delights from a range of different cultures and we have aimed at providing many great choices. You’ll only be disappointed if you don’t get around to trying a sample of all on your wishlist!

SERVICES

MUSIC SHUTTLE BUS

We provide a Music Shuttle Bus so that you can easily access the outer venues in town. The bus leaves the Gardens Oval every half hour between 7.00pm and 11.30pm Friday; 8.00am to 11.30pm Saturday and Sunday; and 8.00am until 1.00pm on Monday. The last bus leaves the Festival Arena Friday, Saturday and Sunday nights at 12.00 midnight.

The Music Shuttle Bus is a low floor bus with pram and wheelchair access. The bus service requests a gold coin donation. See the Festival Map for the Music Shuttle Bus route.

WHEELCHAIR ACCESS

The Festival is a one & all-accessible event and provides facilities for people with a disability. There is wheelchair access to all venues in the Festival Arena, Fiddlers Green, Railway Stage and the Reardon Theatre in Bank Street. Disabled persons’ parking is located in Campbell Street at the front gate of the Festival Arena, within the road block, which will be attended. Those with the appropriate permit will be let through the road closure to park—space permitting. Wheelchair accessible portable toilets are located within The Shebeen and at each of the public toilet locations.

HEARING LOOP

We have two dedicated Stages for people with hearing aids. Stage 1 and Stage 3 have a radio frequency transmitted hearing induction loop system in each, providing those with hearing aids a superior sound experience. Those who wish to utilise the loop will need to pick up a receiver from the information tent. This service is provided by ‘Word of Mouth’.

FESTIVAL INFORMATION STALL

Need help? Friendly festival staff are on duty at the Information Stall to assist you. Located adjacent to Stage 1, this is the place to go if you want to ask any questions, get your free sunscreen, pick up some great festival merchandise, or to bring or search for lost property. It operates from 9.00am until 6.00pm Saturday and Sunday and 9.00am to 1.00pm on Monday.

PARENTS’ ROOM

A facility is set aside for the use of parents for baby change and feeding, located at the back of Stage 1.

NAPPY CHANGING STATION Port Fairy Community House is running a Nappy Changing Station at Railway Place.

Drop in to change your little one. Child friendly play area, toilets, private feeding area and bottle/food warming available. Open Saturday & Sunday 10am – 4pm. Gold coin donation.

WASTE & RECYCLING Please dispose of all your own refuse and help us keep the venues clear of rubbish immediately after the concerts. This makes life much easier for our volunteers.

The Port Fairy Folk Festival Committee is committed to protecting the environment by running the Festival in an environmentally responsible and sustainable manner for future generations. We are developing and implementing programs to reduce the Festival’s energy consumption and waste production by working with staff, volunteers, contractors and stall holders to change practices and ensure a more energy efficient and environmentally friendly festival.

Throughout the Festival Arena recycling bins are defined by yellow lids and general waste bins are defined by red lids.

DRINKING WATER AND DISHWASHING

The Festival provides complimentary drinking water and dishwashing facilities at the western end of Stage 1.

FESTIVAL STAFF + SECURITY

Thank you for cooperating with our festival venue staff, most of whom are volunteers, and our special security staff who are there to help you and ensure the Festival runs smoothly.

Mike Brady and his band, Greenspot, share Irish-Australian songs harking back to Brady’s musical roots in Ireland (the land of his father) and his childhood along Victoria’s Great Ocean Road.

Deep in the deserts of Rajasthan, Australian artists Jeff Lang & Bobby Singh met Asin Langa & Bhungar Manganiyar. A virtuosic repertoire evolved, yet they have no common language apart from their music.

STEVE POLTZ IN CONCERT


Regarded as one of the most talented and prolific songwriters of our time, Steve Poltz is known to take an audience from laughter to tears and back again in the space of the same song - captivating audiences with a mix of singing, storytelling, shredding and the occasional spoken word rants that have been known to incite riots.

Take a tour of Australian music with husband and wife duo Tessa and Brendon Boney of Microwave Jenny, songwriters Chris Tamway, Shane Howard, and Frank Yamma as they share songs that capture the spirit and identity of Australia.

These round-robin concerts each take on a particular theme. A brave host tries to wrangle several festival artists to take turns talking, playing, jamming, and generally having a great time. These are unique events spiced with spontaneous twists and turns.

Continuing with their wonderful support of songwriting education, APRA AMCOS has again sponsored the ‘Songs in the Schools’ project. During February and March this year, local artist Tom Richardson hosted workshops for secondary school music students in the Port Fairy/Warrnambool area. These intensive workshops are focused on songwriting and culminate in the creation and performance of new songs from the students. The songs written by the students have been recorded by Nick Frampton and VET Technical and Production students at Emmanuel Secondary College, and will be produced as a compilation CD.

MATON ARTIST OF THE YEAR

The Maton Artist of the Year for 2015 is Mama Kin (Danielle Caruana). The award is a Maton EBG808 Artist valued at $2999.00. It comes with the brilliant AP5 Pro pickup system and Maton Case. The Festival will present three awards this year. The Artist of the Year award recognises an individual who has made a significant contribution to this festival, the folk music community, and industry. The Maton Class Act for Emerging Talent is an encouragement award for young performers. Last but not least is the much-loved Pat Glover Storytelling Award.

This is the 21st year the great Australian guitar company, Maton Guitars, comes to Port Fairy as a major sponsor of the Artist of the Year Award and the Maton Class Act Award for Emerging Talent. THE PAT GLOVER MEMORIAL STORYTELLING AWARD

You can enter this award by collecting and filling in an entry form from the organisers at the competition before it starts, from Performer Reception or from the Aussie Morning Show team. Named after local identity and famed storyteller Pat Glover, who passed away just after the 2005 Festival, this award has been part of the Festival for many years. The aim of the award is to preserve the art of storytelling, and over the years both amateur and professional storytellers and reciters have won it. The actual event is a celebration of storytelling. Judges are asked to perform, make comments and talk about storytelling. Professional entertainers and storytellers who do not wish to enter the award are welcome to participate as guest storytellers.

Types of stories which have been presented for the award fit into the following categories: real-life experiences, anecdotes, jokes, fables, myths and legends, ghostly and supernatural experiences, tall tales, ‘learned’ monologues and recitations in verse. (Please note that while recitations of verse are not especially appropriate for this award, they are acceptable providing they meet the storytelling criteria).

THE RICK MERRIGAN MUSIC AWARD

This award was created in 2010 in honour and memory of Rick Merrigan, a former committee member of the Geelong Folk Music Club and The Festival and invaluable contributor to the Port Fairy Folk Festival since the early 1980s.

RUSSELL CLARK YOUNG POETS’ AWARD

The winners of The Russell Clark Award appear at the final concert at the Folk Circus Stage on Monday at 11.00am. They have been chosen at their schools in the lead up to the Festival. The award is made in recognition of the enormous contribution made to the Festival and to young people by Russell Clark.

The late Russell Clark, past Festival Committee President and Mayor of Port Fairy, was a great supporter of local youth and a great contributor to the Festival as a committee member before his presidency. He was head of the Committee during the exciting growth phase of the Festival in the 1990s.

If�you’re�born�to�do�something,�it’s only a matter of time before your destiny manifests.

When�I�first�came�to�know�Daniella,�she�wasn’t�yet�performing.��But�I�reckon�you�can tell a lot about someone by the way they�dance.�With�a�fire�in�her�belly�and�a�genetic predisposition to groove, it was obvious that music was in her bones and it�was�only�a�matter�of�time�before�she’d�take to the stage.

When�some�years�later�I�first�heard�Mama�Kin, I instantly recognised a triple threat: soulful singing, great songs, great players, charismatic performance…not to mention beautiful�hair�and�fabulous�outfits.�Better double that triple on the threat o’�meter,�I�want�to�be�in�THAT�band.

I was genuinely excited to be at Port Fairy for�Mama�Kin’s�first�appearance�there�in�2011.�I�have�learned�over�the�years�-�sometimes�the�hard�way�-�that�the�Port�Fairy Audience is a fairly discerning lot. They want to know about you, they want to be invited into your story and above all they want to be entertained by good music, all whilst remaining comfortably in their chairs. Aside from the last bit this would be the perfect pairing. Mama Kin never�holds�back.�She�gives�herself�over�to the music, to the audience, and with Brother Michael and George holding the down�the�grooves,�you�can’t�help�but�love�the experience.

I�was�fortunate�to�witness�her�first�show�on�the�Saturday�morning�as�part�of�a�workshop�in�the�round.�She�was�really�nervous about going on solo in front of the big crowd with some better known acts and was considering playing a new song,�‘The�River�as�She�Runs’,�which�she�had never performed. Armed with just her uke�and�udu,�she�played�her�first�song,�sounded�a�bit�nervous�but�got�people’s�attention.��When�her�turn�came�around�again�she�stood�to�introduce�‘The�River�As�She�Runs’�and�glanced�over�at�me,�“should�I?”��Thumbs�up�from�me.�Her�voice was shaky with emotion and as she�sung�through�the�first�verses�a�hush�came over the tent. Everybody was right there with her, listening, supporting. You could hear the change in her voice as she slipped deep into the song and sang

from her heart. At the end it was one of those festival moments. The last chord rings, followed by that silent pause when everyone breathes in the last of what they just heard. And then the applause: strong, heartfelt, on and on it went. I had tears in my eyes. Mama Kin had arrived!

She�ended�that�workshop�with�‘Beat�and�Holler’�inviting�everyone�to�join�in,�but we were already there. After that performance�Mama�Kin�was�on�everyone’s�lips. Bold circles on the program, the “must�see.”�Tents�crammed�to�the�edges,�people�out�of�their�seats�dancing�-�heaven�forbid! Port Fairy had fallen in love with this gutsy, gorgeous, groovalicious Mama making music and spreading her joy around.

THE FESTIVAL ARENA CONCERTS The Festival Arena is at the south end of Sackville Street in Southcombe Park. Located at Stage 6 this venue is filled with fun for all ages by day and concerts by night.

LICENSED VENUES THE SHEBEEN This is the largest licensed venue in the Festival Arena, where you can enjoy a Guinness or a wine together with a great

program of festival acts. This venue can be accessed by children only when accompanied by an adult, however, after 8.00pm the Festival Committee recommends that children do not enter or remain in the bar. Children should remain with their accompanying adult at all times while in The Shebeen.

THE SPEAKEASY Located at the rear of Stage 2, the new Speakeasy licensed bar offers patrons refreshments in a relaxed atmosphere. The bar will be open on Saturday and Sunday from 12 noon. AROUND TOWN THE LECTURE HALL Concerts

This historic hall is just beside Fiddlers Green, near the roundabout in Sackville Street. This year the Lecture Hall is the venue for Barry versus Kelly.

REARDON THEATRE Feature Concerts

The Reardon Theatre is located on Bank Street, near James Street. It was the main venue for the first series of Festivals. The Reardon Theatre hosts concerts in a safe and alcohol-free venue. Evening concerts are generally not ticketed – Free Entry.

ST PATS HALL Concerts, Workshops

Situated near the corner of Campbell and William Streets, the St Pats Hall program includes Tim Whelan’s Welcome on Friday night, the ‘Port Fairy Has Words’ artists, sessions, and other special concerts throughout the weekend.

SCHOOL HALL Workshops, Festival Choir

This delightful hall at the Consolidated School is a venue for workshops and the Festival Choir rehearsals - come join

the fun! Just turn left out of the Festival Arena gate and walk up Campbell Street to the old bluestone school. The hall is just inside the gate and on the left.

ST JOHNS CHURCH Concerts

A beautiful, old bluestone building, this is the venue for the Church Concert on Sunday afternoon, the Hymn Singing Concert on Sunday evening, a Catholic Folk Mass, and an Anglican Folk Eucharist. Access to the church is from the northern end of Barclay Street off Bank Street, or from Regent Street.

FREE VENUES FIDDLERS GREEN Concerts

There is a full program of music on Saturday and Sunday, featuring main program and frINge artists. Fiddlers Green is now the official name of the town square and the new permanent stage that has been built with support from Jack Smits and the Folk Festival Committee.

THE RAILWAY STAGE Concerts

Situated at Railway Place, the site of the old railway station has an all-weekend

craft market and stage, featuring music on Saturday, Sunday and Monday.

THE RSL HALL APRA AMCOS Songwriter Speaks, Troubadours Open Stage

With assistance and support from APRA AMCOS, we are running the APRA AMCOS Songwriter Speaks forums beginning at 7.30pm on Saturday and Sunday evenings in the RSL Hall on Railway Place. Come and perform in the ‘open mike’ blackboard concerts at the Troubadours Open Stage. The venue is open Saturday and Sunday from 12 midday until 5.00pm. Get there early to put your name on the blackboard, as time slots are limited!

SURF CLUB Charlies on East Concerts, Sessions

The Surf Club is the venue for the Fringe Music Stage and Celtic Fire jams. Located on Beach Street, you can take our Music Shuttle Bus to the venue. This venue is fully licensed and serves great food!

MUSIC IN THE SCHOOLS: UKE & SING 2

Port Fairy school children are treated to a preview of the Port fairy Folk Festival as part of the Festival’s schools program. The five schools involved in the 2nd annual program are - Port Fairy Consolidated School, St Patrick’s School Port Fairy, Koroit and District Consolidated School, St Patrick’s School Koroit, and the P-6 students from Hawkesdale P-12. This year the Uke & Sing 2 program combined circus skills, singing and ukulele guided by workshop hosts Phil Melgaard and Terry Cole. Students from all five schools contributed to “The Uke & Sing 2 Schools Concert” at 1pm on Friday March 6 at Stage 6 in the Festival Arena.

Phil Melgaard has successfully juggled careers as a musician, entertainer and performing arts teacher. He is a free-lance ‘educational jollity consultant’ and ‘fun-monger’ dedicated to putting fun into the curriculum in schools throughout Victoria. For thirty years Phil has worked consistently as an entertainer and performing arts teacher. Phil has been performing at Port Fairy Folk Festival since 1981, coincidentally the same year

he met and began colluding with Terry Cole. They formed the Famous Fratellini Brothers a few years later. Phil plays the ukelele, writes songs and sings as well as performing and teaching circus skills throughout the state.

Terry Cole has been a regular performer at Port Fairy over the years, and worked on the Port Fairy Schools Program. He is renowned as a multi-skilled circus performer in ‘Circus In A Suitcase’, and as a musician in the Famous Fratellini Brothers. Some of Terry’s recent performing credits include – Commonwealth Games Melbourne, World Expo Brisbane, Moomba and The Flying Fruit Fly Circus 10th Anniversary. Terry is an experienced circus skills teacher and an inspiring ukulele performer.

CRAFTworX FOR KIDS

Jude�Stewart,�a�textile�artist�and�teacher,�is the organiser and developer of this year’s�art�activities�for�the�CRAFTworX�program. Together with her team of experienced and energetic instructors, a programme of craft activities will be on offer�for�children�of�all�ages.�Port�Fairy�Folk�Festival�has�offered�this�program�for many years giving the children of the festival a chance to relax and create. It has been a highlight for many of the children, returning year after year.

Registration�for�activities�is�10.00am�Saturday�and�10.00am�Sunday�for�all�workshops that will take place on the day of registration. Registration is not needed�for�the�5�and�under�activities�–�these children will simply go to the signed area for their activities at the times listed below and begin.

A range of exciting art and craft workshops for festival children takes place at CRAFTworX in the Children’s Arena. Studios decorated with colorful satin banners contain tables of equipment and materials. There are six workshops running at a time, including a special activity area for children 5 years under, along with their carers. Children will make and take home something artistic, useful and educational. Be on time so you can register for your chosen activity.

Bunting

Bunting is a great way to recycle bits and pieces of fabrics. Children will have lots of fun choosing and cutting up fabrics of�all�colours�and�patterns;�attaching the pieces to cords to make simple hanging decorations.

Hula Hoops

Children will be supplied with a blank hoop and plenty of colourfully decorated contact, which they will cut into strips. The contact is then twirled round and round decorating the hoop. There will be plenty of time and space to practise!

Juggling Balls

Balloons are cut and stretched over a small sack of grain, creating a strong and colourful juggling ball. A set of three will be made. An experienced juggler will

share their knowledge and pass on the simple�steps�needed�to�learn�the�much-envied skill of juggling, then its practise, practise and more practise!

Painted Fans

Children take great care in painting fans�with�inks�and�fine�brushes.�If�time�permits�children�can�add�fine�decorations�of�sequence.

Painted Hats

Painted hats have made a comeback this year. Children will be supplied with a plain white hat to be painted with fabric paint. Children will be shown some basic painting skills to achieve lovely blends�and�pattern�work.�We�advise�parents that it is not the best activity for�the�very�young.�We�supply�smocks but cannot guarantee that all paint ends up on the hat.

Printed Calico bags

Plain calico bags will be used to test some basic�printing�techniques.�Children�will�have fun learning and playing around with�techniques�that�will�transform�a�plain calico bag into something special.

In 1969, having become partially sighted, Jeff began a life and love of folk music, pottery and photography. Jeff plays old-time fiddle, didgeridoo, and mandolin and has won many Australian Championships on the gum leaf. Jeff began making and playing ocarinas (small clay flutes) after completing a two-year ceramic course in 1987 at East Sydney Technical College. The ocarina is played by gently blowing to produce a beautiful, sweet note.

Buffy Sainte-Marie’s superb songwriting made her famous. She’s penned a fistful of standards that have inspired a wide-spectrum of musicians – from Barbra Streisand to Neko Case, Glen Campbell to Galaxie 500, Quicksilver Messenger Service to Francoise Hardy.

But it’s her eccentric voice that makes her such a compelling artist. It’s thrilling the way she throws that heavy vibrato around on albums like the 1969 cult-classic Illuminations and 1975’s Changing Woman.

Sainte-Marie calls in from Hawaii, and such is her enthusiasm, it sounds like she’s about to materialise through the phone.

Maybe it’s because she’s got a new album in the can, maybe it’s because she’s set to play in Australia. Maybe it’s just because …

I’ve just been watching a Sesame Street clip of you singing ‘Cripple Creek’ with a mouth bow. Do people still lose their shit when you pull out a mouth bow?

[Laughing] Yeah, they do, they like it, it’s very unusual. In fact, I have a new album coming out in May and I use mouth bow on two or three of the songs.

Fourty-five years into her career, Buffy Sainte-Marie is still a changing woman.

‘Moonshot’ is my favourite Buffy song. Great lyric and string arrangement. Do you still have an emotional connection to that song?

I do. I really like that song, some songs just really touch me when nobody has heard them but me. I hardly ever play it. But thank you for mentioning that one.

What do we have to do to make sure you play it in Australia?

[Laughing] When I’m there I probably will not be playing it, because the band doesn’t know it. When I’m making up a set, it’s usually a combination of whatever is on our latest album, plus the standards that people normally request. We’ll be doing things like ‘Universal Soldier’, which is a protest song. ‘Up Where We Belong’, which won me an Academy Award. ‘Until It’s Time For You to Go’, which has been recorded by everybody and his sister, and a whole lot of new things that you haven’t heard before. But, I’d like to do ‘Moonshot’, that’s a real good idea. The problem is we don’t do a real long concert. If we did, I could indulge myself.

Entering the twilight zone of a coruscating kaleidoscope of a career that has embraced literally a thousand years of music, Richard Thompson finally has an opportunity he has long craved: to unleash his inner rocker on Australian audiences.

Fireworks are a foregone conclusion, as anyone who has seen him perform voltage enhanced will appreciate. With an axe strapped to his body, Thompson is a truly incendiary player, one who tailors a combination of controlled pyrotechnics, wicked chord progressions and radically bent notes to the requirements of each solo and each song. Inherent folkie that he is, RT can shred with the slickest heavy metal practitioners in the business.

On four Australian tours, local fans have only been able to experience first-hand his more folk-oriented side, as one of the world’s most acclaimed acoustic guitarists. This time, Thompson’s thrilled to be performing with his drummer and bassist, Michael Jerome and Taras Prodaniuk, in Australia for the first time. As he says: “I didn’t want to disappear from this earthly incarnation without bringing the band down under.”

On some shows, he plans to do an opening acoustic segment. At the festivals, he promises to mix in some acoustic songs as well. With such a rich and extensive back catalogue of material at his disposal, Thompson conceded in a recent Q & A that it’s going to be tough to pare the set list down: “I’ll try to select things that excite us to play, new things, old things, maybe a few covers.”

Apart from the Oz tour, what else is in the pipeline for 2015?

Record, release and touring in Europe and North America. I’m working on a longer piece about World War One for 2016.

You’re rightly renowned as a dynamic live performer. How do you set about preparing for a show?

There’s the physical aspect — warming up the fingers and getting the voice supple — and mentally I start focusing the morning of a show. It’s all about concentration really.

You’ve evolved a highly distinctive style of electric guitar playing. Has it been informed by any great players of yore?

Obviously I listened to all the jazz players and rock ‘n’ roll players growing up. Favourites would be Django, Charlie Christian, James Burton, Johnny Smith … the list goes on. But I’m very influenced by other instruments, especially pipes, fiddle, and piano.

Do you enjoy playing axe as much as acoustic?

I see them as different instruments, and different opportunities.

In terms of technique, do you have to make many adjustments when you switch from one mode to the other?

I play a lot less notes on electric — on acoustic, I’m trying to cover all the bases. Also, I use a lot of tunings on acoustic, hardly any on electric. I use pick-and-finger style on both.

In maritime folklore, the Fiddler’s Green is a legendary afterlife for sailors who have served at least 50 years at sea where there is perpetual mirth, a fiddle that never stops and dancers who never tire. Every year during The Festival, the Village Green has informally taken on the moniker “Fiddler’s Green”. Last November, the name was officially adopted and after more than 16 years of discussion, a new permanent stage has been erected on The Green in a joint project between Moyne Shire Council and Port Fairy Folk Festival.

“We thought a name change might be a fitting way to usher in a new era of this important space…. the name Fiddler's Green has strong links with the festival but it also relates to the seafaring past of the Port Fairy. There is a famous song called the Fiddler's Green by John Conolly that has been performed many times at the festival that captures that connection to the sea, so it all fits in nicely." – John Young, Port Fairy Folk Festival Vice President

The Green on the corner of Sackville and Bank streets was officially named “The Village Green” by the former Borough of Port Fairy in May 1991. It is interesting to note that The Borough Council also named several other areas: the former station yards as “Railway Place” and the former railway land between Bank and Gipps Streets as “Fisherman’s Walk”.

For the first festival in December 1977, the small park was used as a key venue and re-badged as the Fiddler’s Green. “The first festivals had a theme of traditional Irish and

Australian music, and this was one reason we chose Port Fairy as the location for the festival,” recalls Jamie McKew who led the small group who founded the event. “I remember referring to the little square as Fiddler’s Green when planning the program, inspired by the popular folk song – Fiddler’s Green. Irish Breakfasts were organized each year by Fay and Morgan McAlinden with family and friends...continuing the Fiddler’s Green story.” The square has been referred to as the “Fiddler’s Green” for each festival ever since. “Its brilliant that John Young championed the tradition even further and to now have the square officially renamed permanently. This is illustrates how the town regards the idea of tradition and how it has embraced and values The Festival” said Jamie.

One prominent Port Fairy resident behind the name change idea is Moyneyana Festival chairman Reg Harry. As Reg explains, "it has been known as the Fiddler's Green during the folk festival for many years now and I think it makes sense to make it a permanent thing, it is a bit more of an original name than the Village Green."

Jack Smits designed the new stage with a curved roof based on the bait shed that adjoined the former co-op building at the town’s wharf. The 9 metre by 7.5 metre stage sits towards the rear of The Green and faces west towards Sackville Street. The stage also has timber decking and apron posts similar to the wharf and includes disabled access at the rear.

Work on building the stage began in September 2014 with up to 25 volunteers from the Port Fairy Folk Festival’s “construction crew” led by Jack Smits lending their efforts to

get the job done. Retired Port Fairy builder Arty Hoey also volunteered his expertise to help steer the project through to its completion. Another member of the construction crew was chairman of the Moyneyana Festival, Reg Harry, who had long advocated for the stage to be built. He said having

a permanent stage would save a lot of time and money for the community groups who used the area, many of whom had members in their senior years.

VALE DENNIS O’KEEFFEA TRIBUTE

1957–2014

Australian music lovers faced a sad day when Warrnambool resident and long time Port Fairy Folk Festival performer Dennis O'Keeffe passed away last year on March 9 (the Sunday of last year's festival). Dennis' skills as a singer, songwriter and songwriting tutor gained broad recognition when he became the Lake School (Koroit) songwriting tutor in 2003. Between the years 2004 and 2010, Dennis' songwriters class was highly sought after and the songwriters concert became the feature concert of the Lake School, always selling out, and always "bursting at the sides" with creativity and exceptional results from its participants.

Dennis was a great songwriter himself - his songs include ‘Mary of the Cross’, ‘The Tail Gunner's Wife’ and ‘Wrought Iron Australians’, and he will long be remembered for his fostering of the Australian tradition of song. For many years Dennis lead the Australian Music Session at the National Folk Festival in Canberra, and was involved in the annual folk research presentations at the Australian National Library. Dennis was a founder of the Four Ports Folk Club, the Brucknell Music Camp, held down a long residency with O'Keeffe's Slide at Rafferty's Bar in Warrnambool, and performed many times at Port Fairy Folk Festival. In 2005, Dennis was inducted as a Legend of the Lake by Tain magazine editor, Val Noone. Dennis made many friends in the folk and music scene in Australia including songwriter John Dengate, historian Graeme Seal, and poet Jim Haynes. Dennis achieved all of this while conducting a highly successful career as an optometrist and raising a family.

In 1992, Dennis paid a visit to the grave of union shearer Billy Maclean at the Illowa Cemetery. This event triggered a twenty-five year journey researching the history of the song, Waltzing Matilda. Dennis' research has become part of the story of Waltzing Matilda itself and included many highlights and discoveries. In 1994, Dennis was part of the re-enactment of the burning of the steam boat, Rodney, on the Darling River, near Pooncarie, NSW. Later that year, he sang with historian Richard Magoffin in a ceremony commemorating the death of the swagman, Samuel Hoffmeister, at the Four Mile Billabong, near Kynuna, Western Queensland. In 2012, Dennis' research was published by Allen & Unwin in a book entitled, Waltzing Matilda, The Secret Story of Australia's Favourite Song. The book then became a musical written by Felix Meagher and Dennis O'Keeffe, The Man They Call The Banjo.

Dennis is survived by his wife Anne OKeeffe, and his two sons Joel and Ryan, who took an interest in music at an early age, and formed the hard rock band, Airbourne. Airbourne has toured nationally and internationally for ten years and has released a number of CDs and DVDs.

Dennis is buried at the Tower Hill Cemetery.

Next March, we will be celebrating another milestone along the happy trails of this festival when we present the 40th edition, almost 39 years along from the first in December 1977.

To explain, in 1980 we looked up the theory of time travel and discovered we could go back in time plus change the dates, by running two festivals just 3 months apart – December 1979 and then March 1980. The 40th year will actually occur in December 2017. The good news is that we are not as old as we thought! This is a little known secret bonus for making and enjoying music. We hope things stay that way.

There has been a lot of water under the Moyne River Bridge since then. Over the years of 40 festivals we will have presented around 3,500 acts including over 500 international acts and over 12,000 musicians to an audience of beyond 240,000 ticket holders and 1,000,000 attendances to the wee village of Port Fairy. As we always say, “Fifty thousand mutton birds can’t be wrong”.

FESTIVAL HELP + EMERGENCIES

THE FESTIVAL TICKET OFFICE + EXCHANGE

In front of Swimming Pool, Campbell Street, this office is where you exchange your e-ticket or ticket for the permanent four-day pass, which is a wristband. Lost, damaged or misplaced tickets cannot be replaced. Show your wristband to staff at the entry to all festival venues. From Saturday evening at 8.00pm the Ticket Office moves to Performer Reception, adjacent to the swimming pool.

LOST PROPERTY

Items of lost property are to be deposited and picked up from the Festival Information Stall in the Festival Arena, adjacent to Stage 1, until 6.00pm each day and until the close of the Festival on Monday. At other times, lost property enquiries can be made at the front of the Sports Pavilion (Performer Reception). After the Festival has ended, you can make enquiries about lost property to our Festival Office on (03) 5568 2227.

LOST CHILDREN

Please bring any lost child to the Police van next to the front entrance of the Arena (Campbell St) or to the Festival Information Stall. We ask that a parent or responsible designated adult stay with your young children at all times. Please write a contact number on your child’s wristband.

LEAVING PORT FAIRY ON MONDAY

All patrons are requested to leave the Festival Arena by 2.00pm on Monday. Due to Occupational Health and Safety legislation, the Arena officially becomes a work site at this time. We know it’s hard to leave after such a fun-filled weekend – see you for our 40th festival in 2016!

Traffic leaving Port Fairy on Monday is encouraged to exit via Bank or Regent Streets to the Princes Highway rather than Griffith Street (the golf course road).

EMERGENCY

In the unlikely event of an emergency in any of the festival venues, Venue Managers will advise the audience of exits from the venue and site and security personnel will assist by giving directions, providing additional exits if possible, advise of any dangers, and facilitate an orderly evacuation.

MEDICAL AID

The Red Cross van is beside the Campbell Street entrance inside the Festival Arena with the Police and CFA. The hospital is situated in Villiers Street and is available for urgent treatment on the weekend (Please see the map in the Program section).
