Thank You for Your Tremendous Support

At the start of 2019, Epic invited me to speak at a staff meeting, to discuss homelessness in Dane County and Porchlight’s continuum of services to support this population. When I walked into Deep Space’s packed auditorium of 10,000 employees, it exceeded my expectation of 10 people around a conference room table! It was a wonderful opportunity to share the progress we have made to support our homeless neighbors, to emphasize the needs that still exist and to thank Epic employees for their support over the years. They serve and sell Porchlight Products in their cafeterias, serve meals at the men’s shelter, make desks for Safe Haven residents, hold their annual household goods drive, and provide generous financial support.

I encourage you to visit our new website at www.porchlightinc.org. The new site features my friend Mark, who I met 25 years ago when he lived in Porchlight’s group home and I was his case manager. He has lived in the community for the past 20 years. We go grocery shopping each week and have lunch together every month. I tell Mark that after all these years, he is no longer my client, but my friend. In 2019, Mark had both of his knees and one of his hips replaced. It was a stark reminder that those we serve struggle with the same health issues as many of us but face additional challenges such as access to health care and recovery options.

2019 marked the passing of our founder and friend, Fritz Grutzner. In November, we celebrated his legacy at the Annual Dinner.

To honor his steadfast commitment to providing affordable housing, we purchased a property of thirteen one-bedroom and efficiency units we will affectionately call “The Fritz”.

This brings Porchlight’s affordable housing stock total to 370 units. We’ve provided property management, maintenance and supportive services to these residents for more than 30 years. Our ultimate goal of providing solutions to homelessness is best accomplished through the provision of affordable housing.

Porchlight would like to recognize everyone who donated their time and talent to create community gatherings, concerts, golf outings, plays, BBQs, and all-around unique occasions that make a difference in the lives of those who need a helping hand.

We have groups and individuals who donate their money, time, strength, and personal connections to help us continue our mission. Our residents, guests, and staff thank everyone who contributes to Porchlight.

What We Do: Sheltering Men with Nowhere To Go

The Men’s Drop-In Shelter is the only emergency shelter for single men experiencing homelessness in Dane County. In 2019, we provided shelter services to 1,171 men who were experiencing homelessness, serving approximately 75 men on a nightly basis in the summer and 160 to 190 men during the winter months. When demand becomes higher in the cold winter, there are three shelter sites available: Grace Episcopal Church, Saint John’s Lutheran Church, and First United Methodist Church.

Shelter guests are provided dinner and breakfast, showers (including free soap, shampoo, conditioner, lotion, and clean towels), and the use of washers and dryers (including free laundry detergent). Guests are also able to obtain new socks, underwear, and pants. In the cold season they can receive winter coats, hats, gloves, scarves, sweaters, and hand warmers. On Tuesday evenings, shelter guests are able to receive immediate medical care through a clinic that is operated by the generosity of medical professionals and students from the UW School of Medicine and Public Health.

Our Impact: LT Harris’s Story

LT came to Madison in 2016. After his first effort to secure and maintain housing failed, he became homeless, in part due to his addiction issues. He eventually found his way to the Men’s Drop-In Shelter.

The daily struggles of being homeless were compounded by the tragic deaths of two of LT’s adult children. First, his son LT Jr., was lost to gun violence, and then his daughter to breast cancer. LT experienced suicidal ideation after his daughter passed away. Aided by his Porchlight Shelter Case Manager and the community of others experiencing homelessness, LT found trusted individuals he was able to lean on and go through his grieving process, supported.

Two months after the death of his daughter, LT’s determination paid off when he was informed that he had reached the top of the Community Development Authority’s housing list. He was offered a subsidized one-bedroom apartment. With the support of his Porchlight Men’s Shelter Case Manager, First United Methodist Church, Sankofa Outreach, and The Beacon, LT was able to successfully transition into permanent housing on August 3, 2018, where he remains today. LT (pictured) diligently cares for his eight goldfish and five plants. He also maintains connections with his remaining adult children.

What We Do: Building Connections to Mental Health Resources

Safe Haven had humble beginnings in a house located on Roth Street, where it opened in 1995 as a drop-in shelter and transitional residence for homeless adults with mental illness. Safe Haven has served over 1,374 clients in the past 25 years. In 2018, Porchlight converted the 14 transitional rooms to permanent rental housing units for individuals who are homeless and suffering from a mental illness. The day program continues seven days per week with expanded services.

In 2012, Porchlight built a new state-of-the-art facility on Nakoosa Trail. This facility features a commercial kitchen that provides three meals a day and a day program for guests. Safe Haven serves hot meals, provides laundry service, shower facilities, mail service, and connects shelter guests

with housing and community resources. Safe Haven served 486 day guests in 2019.

Our Impact: Success Through Supportive Services

Robert “Clarence” Anderson used services at Safe Haven from 2016 to 2019 while he was experiencing homelessness. Facing housing barriers such as mental illness and criminal justice involvement, Clarence was staying at the Porchlight Men’s Shelter or in his truck and using day services at Safe Haven.

Safe Haven provided Clarence with a place to meet his basic needs and develop supportive relationships with staff. Crisis Stabilization services were provided to Clarence at Safe Haven when he experienced periods of struggle, and he was referred to Comprehensive Community Support services. With support from his Case Management care team, Clarence found permanent housing in 2019 and has been in his own place for about a year. Clarence (pictured below) now returns to Safe Haven about once per month to volunteer, giving back where he once received services.

What We Do: A Safe Place for Recovery

The Veterans Transitional Housing Program (VTHP) is a collaborative endeavor between Porchlight and the Veterans Administration Grant and Per Diem (GPD) Program. It is a 24-bed, single-room occupancy, transitional housing program for single men who are military veterans and are homeless or at risk of homelessness. A case manager, peer support specialist, and a Veterans Administration social worker are available to assist with money management, alcohol and drug abuse recovery support, referrals to community services/support systems, legal support, medical care, and counseling. The program provides a continuum of care while preparing the veterans to transition into permanent housing. The VTHP served 52 veterans in 2019.

Our Impact: Providing Stability Through Social Connections

After struggling with drug and alcohol addiction for 35 years, David (pictured) landed in prison. At the Thompson Correctional Center in 2019, David decided to turn his life over to God. As he continued growing in faith and obedience, he wanted

to move away from Milwaukee and find a place to make a fresh start. David connected with Madison Urban Ministry (MUM), another local agency, that provided David with housing resources in Madison. Since David is a veteran, MUM suggested Porchlight’s Veterans Transitional Housing Program (VTHP). David filled out an application and after two weeks, he was approved to move in November 15, 2019.

“My room was my safe sanctuary.” Three meals a day in the cafeteria, I never had to worry about food to eat. When I needed winter boots, the Porchlight staff took care of it,” said David. Unfortunately, during his time at the VHTP, David’s brother passed away and then, three months later, his cousin passed away.

“Loran, Hannah and Jenn were always available to comfort me and provide support. My weekly check-in kept me on point. I could use the common room to hold my weekly support group meetings set up by MUM. Loran, Porchlight’s peer specialist, hosts a men’s support group on Wednesday evenings and this helped me greatly. Most of the men that were there showed me friendly gestures of support. Hannah, my case manager, went above and beyond her normal duties to help me when I needed it. She’s a big reason why I now live in a new, one-bedroom apartment. Rebekkah, the cook, was ready to help me anytime I needed it. She comforted me during my grieving period. I thank them all very much.”

What We Do: Keeping Families in their Homes

Porchlight’s Dwelling Intervention Grants & Sustenance (DIGS) eviction prevention program started in January 1999 with a mission to help homeless, recently homeless, and at-risk people with modest rent, security deposit, and utility payments. In addition to housing assistance, DIGS offers “collateral help” of five types: moving costs, storage fees, car repairs, medical needs, and child-related needs. The goal of the program is to keep families housed by providing help when it can be most effective.

DIGS began as a grassroots program with no formal funding. Now, almost 20 years later, DIGS is one of the largest and best-known emergency housing assistance programs in Dane County. It receives ongoing funds from FEMA, United Way, City of Madison, Downtown Rotary, and local faith communities. Our partners in the faith community are too numerous to list here, but they include churches of many different denominations, including Baptist, Episcopal, Evangelical, Lutheran, Unitarian, and the United Church of Christ.

Porchlight collaborates on an ad-hoc basis with just about every homeless service provider in Madison to “pull together” a package of assistance. In 2019, Porchlight helped 401 households with rent, 111 with security deposit and 209 with other housing-related needs, with an average grant of

$232.

Our Impact: Karen’s Story

Karen was born and raised in Merriville, IN. After her divorce, she went through a downward spiral due to schizophrenia. After a prolonged hospital stay, she found herself alone, homeless, and in a shelter. Unable to find housing, Karen decided to relocate to Madison, to be closer to her sister. After six months of staying at the Salvation Army, on the streets, and in her car, her application for an affordable one-bedroom apartment was accepted.

The DIGS program was able to help Karen with a grant toward her security deposit. She has been living at this apartment for the last 12 years.

In 2014, Karen’s car repairs cut into her ability to get to work and pay her rent. The DIGS program helped her catch up with another small grant.

Two years later, Karen had another mental health setback and fell behind on a full month’s rent. The DIGS program advocated for her, and she was able to set up a three-month, self-matching grant to catch up.

Karen’s landlord reports that she is a hard worker, a good friend, and a good neighbor. DIGS staff is pleased to have been able to help Karen remain in her housing. Karen is kind, smart, funny, and always cheerful in the face of hardship. Hopefully she will not need our help again, but if she does, we will continue to do our best to be there for her.

What We Do: Building Self-Esteem Through Hard Work

Porchlight Products is a vocational rehabilitation program for disabled and formerly homeless individuals. Employees in the training program learn important job and life skills, helping them develop a sense of purpose, accomplishment, and satisfaction in their lives that contributes to their stability and independence. In 2019, Porchlight Products employed 21 individuals in its training program. Employees learn to make jams, pickled items, and dry baking mixes in the new production kitchen that opened in the spring of 2017, located on Porchlight’s beautiful new Thierer Road campus. Porchlight Products works with local farmers who supply the ingredients needed to make our products. As crops come into season, we turn them into quality canned and preserved artisan products that

can be sold and enjoyed the rest of the year.

Our Impact

One of the bigger successes we have had in 2019 was bulk sales of our sauerkraut. In 2018, with the assistance of Board Member Ron Luskin, we were thrilled to have The Terrace at Memorial Union start offering our sauerkraut to patrons at their brat stands. In 2019, we were able to add Mallards games at the Duck Pond, Forward Madison FC soccer games at Breese Stevens Field, and The Biergarten at Olbrich Park as locations

to enjoy outdoor fun and Porchlight Products sauerkraut! At the end of the 2019 summer season, approximately 1700 pounds of our kraut had been enjoyed by folks in the Madison area! Additionally, Union South started using our dilly beans on the menu for their Badger Bash events before UW home football games.
