    TECHNICAL NOTES

    Census Districts

For the purpose of the Population and Housing Census, the country was divided into 28 districts for easy administration. However, census districts do not differ significantly from the census districts. Furthermore, some census districts may be large geographically but with a small population (e.g. CKGR). This posed a challenge as some statistics collected maybe too small to make any statistical inference. In such cases, smaller (CKGR and Delta) districts were added to other districts. The census districts are as follows, Gaborone, Francistown, Lobatse, Selibe-Phikwe, Jwaneng, Orapa, Sowa, Ngwaketse, Barolong, Ngwaketse West, South East, Kweneng East, Kweneng West, Kgatleng, Serowe/Palapye, Central Mahalapye, Central Boteti, Central Bobonong, Central Tutume, North East, Ngamiland East, Ngamiland West, Chobe, Delta, Ghanzi, Central Kgalagadi Game Reserve, Kgalagadi South and Kgalagadi North.

    Urban Settlements

The census defines an urban settlement as any human settlement with at least a population of 5000, and 75 percent of those engaged in non-agricultural economic activities. During the 2011 Population and Housing Census, in addition to cities and towns, there were 45 urban villages in Botswana.

    Usual and Current Economic Activity

Usual economic refers to the main economic activity that an individual has been engaged in during the 12 months prior to the census while current economic activity refers to an economic activity that an individual has been engaged in for at least an hour in last seven days.

    Migration

This report does not cover international migration. It focuses only on the movement of people between towns, rural districts and as well as between rural districts and towns. Further, migration in the report includes one year migration and five year migration.

    Fertility and Mortality

As for births and deaths data, the information was collected for 11 months as before. However, no adjustment factor was applied on the data, and as such, it should be used with caution.
