population growth and demographic transition model
DESCRIPTION
TRANSCRIPT
At present the world's population is growing quickly, but… this has not always been the case.

Has the increase in MEDCs been similar to the increase in LEDCs?
DEMOGRAPHIC TRANSITION MODEL
DTM shows population change over time, how birth rate and death rate affect the total population of a
country
HIGH STATIONARY STAGE
Birth and death rates are both very high (35-40 per thousand).
Slow population growth
All human populations up until the late 18thC.
- deseases- food shortages- natural desasters
EARLY EXPANDING STAGE
The death rate declines while the birth rate remains high.
Rapid rise in population growth (a "population explosion")
The decline in the death rate in Europe began in the late 18th.CMany LEDCs entered stage 2 in the second half of the 20th C.
Gap between death and birth rates
LATE EXPANDING STAGE
The gap between birth and death rates narrows due to the decline in birth rates.
Total population is still rising, but the growth begins to slow down
LOW STATIONARY STAGE
The death rate and birth rate remain low.
Slow population growth
The birth rate fluctuates due to changes in the economy.
Most MEDCs are now at this stage
Now a new stage -Declining stage- has
been added as it is relevant to an increasing
number of MEDCs in the 21st century.
The original model didn´t take
into account the fact that some
countries now have a
declining population.
DECLINING STAGE
The death rate remains low or increases a little (ageing population).
The birth rate keeps decreasing.
Negative population growth.
