3.6 dECAdAL GrOWTh rATE OF POPULATION - INdIA ANd MAdhyA PrAdESh
In Census 2011, India has registered a decadal growth of 17.6 percent and Madhya Pradesh that
of 20.3 percent, over the Census 2011 figures. Thus, the growth rate in the state is higher by
2.7 percentage points compared to national average. While comparing population of the state
since 1901, we find that there has been comparatively lesser growth of population during the
first half of the last century 1901 to 1951. Thereafter, there was steady growth of population
during 1951 to 1971. The decadal growth rate in 1951-61 was 24.7 percent and in 1961-71 was
29.3 percent. The declining trend in population started from Census 1971, a decline from 29.3
percent in 1961-71 to 27.2 percent in 1971-81 and 1981-91, 24.3 percent in 1991-01 and 20.3
percent in 2001-11 as shown in Figure 3.10

Note : The estimated birth rate, death rate and infant mortality rate, 2009 in the state is 27.7, 8.5 and 67 respectively
compared to 31.0, 10.1 and 86 in 2001 as per the SRS Bulletin (volume 45 No. 1). Further, the yearly trends on ‘vital
rates’ during the decade 2001-11, in respect of all these three important vital components is declining {Reference: Family
Welfare Statistics in India, 2009 report (based on Sample Registration System, RGI)}. The effect of these vital rates is
reflected in overall decline in decadal growth rate in the state.

3.10 GrOWTh rATE IN dISTrICTS OF MAdhyA PrAdESh
Madhya Pradesh has registered 20.3 percent of decadal growth rate during 2001-11. Among
districts, Indore has registered highest growth rate of 32.7 percent followed by Jhabua with
30.6 percent and Bhopal with 28.5 percent. On the other hand, Anuppur recorded lowest
growth of 12.3 percent followed by Betul with 12.9 percent and Chhindwara 13.0 percent, as
shown in Statement 3.13 and Statement 3.16. There are 10 out of 50 districts in the state which
have recorded higher growth rate of population in 2001-11 compared to previous decade
1991-01. These districts are Bhind, Umaria, Katni, Dindori, Mandla, Seoni, Balaghat, Jhabua,
Khandwa (East Nimar) and Burhanpur.

On analysis of districts by “percent decadal growth” in different ranges, Statement 3.14 reveals
that there are no districts with less than 12 percent decadal growth. Nine districts with 18.0
percent share to total state population of the state have decadal growth rate between the
range of 12 to 15 percent. Further, there are fifteen districts with 28.3 percent share to total
population which have growth rate between the range of 18 to 21 percent. The maximum
percentage decadal growth rate of more than 30 percent is in two districts, constituting a
share of 5.9 percent to the total state population in Census 2011.

3.11 ExPONENTIAL GrOWTh rATE
Exponential Growth of population is based on a model wherein, the amount of increment of
a steadily increasing population, per instance of time, rises continuously in proportion to the
population itself.
Statement 3.15 reveals that there is no district which has registered annual exponential growth
rate of less than one during the decade 2001-11, as compared to one district during last decade.
The number of districts registering annual exponential growth rate of 1.5 to 1.9 has increased from
15 to 24 in 2001-11 as compared to 1991-01. Number of districts registering annual exponential
growth rate in the range of 2.0 to 2.4 has fallen to 13, constituting 25.4 percent of total population of
the state in 2001-11; against 25 districts in 1991-01 which constituted 53.1 percent of population.

Statement 3.16 shows that while comparing the decadal growth rate during the two consecutive
decades 1991-01 and 2001-11, the state has registered a decline in growth rate by 4.0 percent.
On comparison of district level growth rates, it is observed that the maximum decline is in
Singrauli (-10.6%), Mandsaur (-10.5%), Raisen (-10.0%) and Satna (-8.4%).
The annual exponential growth rate is maximum in Indore (2.8%) followed by Jhabua (2.7%),
Bhopal (2.5%), Singrauli (2.5%) and Barwani (2.4%) during 2001-11.
