This booklet has been funded through OUR LIVING COAST and ‘Get Healthy NSW’. It was inspired by the completion of the Coffs Creek Cycleway upgrade, a project funded by the Australian Government and Barbara and Allen Hogbin.

ExploringNo matter what your skill level, there are many opportunities for exploring the Coffs, Bellingen and Nambucca regions on two wheels – from dedicated, shared off-road bike paths, to informal bike routes between towns and villages.

Using this booklet This booklet contains a series of maps, displaying a selection of popular cycling routes enjoyed by local cyclists. Each of these maps are followed by a short description of each of the routes.

It has been presented in six regions, to enable you to explore at your own pace. Pick a ride route as described, or use the booklet to plot your own ride within or across each region.

Select routes that match your skill, confidence and fitness level.

This is in no way a comprehensive list of every possible ride throughout Coffs, Bellingen and Nambucca. For more ideas on favourite riding routes, ask at one of the local bike shops (page 29), or the local Bicycle User Group (BUG) or cycling club (back page.)

The routes included in these maps are primarily on sealed roads or shared paths, with any unsealed sections generally navigable on a ‘hybrid’ bike as well as a mountain bike (MTB).

Popular MTB areas and some routes have been indicated. See the ‘MTB’ section, page 30 for details.

TipsTake a bike lock with you so that you can explore on •foot, relax in a café, or cool off with a swim in the surf, harbour, creek or waterhole.

Road and path conditions may change at any time •due to roadworks, weather events, or maintenance.

aBouT introduction

Gumbaynggirr NationThe Our Living Coast region encompasses the traditional homelands of the Gumbaynggirr people. We respect and fully acknowledge the Gumbaynggirr Aboriginal people as traditional custodians of this land.

Gumbaynggirr Nation stretches along the east coast of NSW from the Nambucca River in the south, to the area of the Clarence River in the north, and west to the Great Dividing Range, and is made up of a number of tribal family clans.

The Gumbaynggirr people have occupied this land for thousands of years, forming one of the largest coastal Aboriginal nations in New South Wales.

Many local places have names relating to Aboriginal language, culture or mythology, and there are a number of sites that hold particular cultural or sacred significance. Locals and visitors are encouraged to take the time to learn and understand more, through cultural NPWS Discovery tours, information displays in National Parks and nature reserves, and by visiting local indigenous cultural centres.

Route Woolgoolga to Arrawarra

Distance 17km return.

Description Signposted bike route between ‘Woopi’ and Arrawarra via residential streets, footbridges, shared paths and bike lanes.

Start/finish Corner of Beach & Wharf Streets, Woolgoolga.

Highlights This route is a great way to enjoy some of the northern beaches scenic points and hidden corners.

Head down Wharf Street, and follow the ‘Arrawarra •Cycleway’ signs as you weave your way through Woolgoolga, Safety Beach and Mullaway.

Caution required on streets in Safety Beach and Mullaway. •

There are two short, steep hills (as marked on map.)•

Some cycle lanes are only on one side of the road, and •the shared path on Arrawarra Road crosses many driveways. Some cyclists may prefer to ride on-road with the flow of traffic.

Detours are shown on the map for scenic beach, lake •and headland views.

Bruxner-Bucca ‘T’

Route ‘up Bruxner’ to Bucca T

Distance 28 km return.

Description On road ride. Sealed. Light traffic. One extended climb.

Start/finishCorner of Bruxner Park Road & Pacific Highway. Start at the top of Bruxner Park Road for an easier ride option.

HighlightsBanana farms, spectacular views, bushland and farmland - this ride is one of the hidden gems of the Coffs Coast.

3km steady climb (300m) winding road, to the saddle •at Bruxner Park Flora Reserve (‘The Gap’). Light traffic, sensational views.

Fast descent through a cool pocket of rainforest, •emerging into more open, ‘rolling’ countryside - a mix of woodland and farmland all the way to the intersection with Bucca Road. Return same way.

Caution required on descent on Bruxner Park Road.•

Take a side trip from the Gap to Sealy Lookout – a •challenging 150m climb over 2km. A spectacular view is your reward. (Rough, narrow, sealed road.)

There are walking trails and picnic facilities in Bruxner •Park Flora Reserve.

Eastbank Road

Route Coramba to Nana Glen

Distance 30 km return.

Description On road. Sealed. Light traffic.

Start/finish Coramba

Highlights Winding, undulating ride through peaceful and scenic countryside.

Head east out of Coramba village, over the river and •under the railway, then turn left into Eastbank Road.

Alternatively take a shortcut down Martin Street (next •to the park). Take care crossing the river and then the level crossing. Turn left into Eastbank Road.

At Bucca Road, turn left and travel 2km into Nana Glen •village.

Caution required on wooden bridges, level crossing, •and winding sections.

Big Block

Route Coffs to Nana Glen & Coramba

Distance 60 km loop.

Description

“Around the block”. It’s just a big one! Popular on-road ride for experienced sport and touring cyclists. Sealed, rural roads. Traffic conditions vary. This ride includes Bruxner/Bucca T and Eastbank Road routes.

Start/finish Coffs CBD.

HighlightsA ride with ‘the lot’. Ups and downs, bananas, rainforest, bushland and picture-postcard farmland scenery.

Head north on the Pacific Highway, past the Big Banana. •Turn left into Bruxner Park Road. It’s a steady 3km climb to the Bruxner Flora Reserve ‘saddle’. 10km to Bucca Road, and then a further 12km to Nana Glen.

Take the lighter traffic option of Eastbank Road to •Coramba. (Orara Way is slightly shorter, but has higher volume traffic, 100kph speed limit.)

Head south again along Coramba Road which has •moderate traffic with limited shoulders. Then take care on the steep descent down Red Hill as you head back into Coffs Harbour.

Upper Orara Loop

Route Karangi to upper orara

Distance 16km loop (26km option).

Description On road route, suitable for all bikes. Light traffic, some climbs.

Start/finish Karangi Public School. Near corner Coramba Road & Upper Orara Road.

Highlights Classic scenic ride through rural countryside.

You can do this Upper Orara Road/Mount Browne Road •circuit either way. Complete loop involves 3km along Coramba Road, which has moderate traffic, and no shoulder in parts.

Add 10km for the South and North Island Loop Road •circuit! On a hot day cool off in the waterhole in the Orara River where North and South Island Loop roads meet.

The Mount Browne Road section involves a bit of a climb •either direction, but as a bonus there are significant shady sections. If you love descents, the climb is worth the effort.

Go out and back along Upper Orara Road for an easier ride.•

Take an optional side trip along Dairyville Road to Bindarri •National Park. 16km return. (See NPWS brochures.)

Coffs Creek Cycleway

Route Circuit around Coffs Creek - linking CBD to Harbour

Distance 8 km loop.

DescriptionMainly off-road, shared path. Will suit MTB, BMX or hybrid. Mostly flat, but with some short inclines.

Start/finishRecommended start/finish at Pet Porpoise Pool, Orlando Street, or the Memorial Olympic Pool in Coffs Street.

HighlightsBushland circuit in the heart of the CBD. Various entry/exit points.

Caution.• This is a shared path.

South bank loop is 2.4m-wide hot mix, concrete, or paved •track with 2.5m-wide boardwalks.

North bank trail surface is 2m-wide gravel or dirt trail •with 2.5m-wide boardwalks.

Some sections are along quiet residential streets•

Caution required on boardwalks, driveways and entrances •Take care negotiating bollards.

Track route map signs have been erected at the Pet •Porpoise Pool and next to the Memorial Olympic Pool on Coffs Street.

Coffs Creek is a tiny piece of paradise winding through the •heart of the city. This circuit offers a wonderful way to enjoy this hidden treasure at your leisure.

Options There are a couple of shorter loop options:

1. Cross the creek at Bangalor Bridge on Hogbin Drive and join the path on the northern side.

2. Ride to the Pet Porpoise Pool and return on the south bank to stay on the sealed pathways.

Harbourside

Route Park Beach to South Wall (Corambirra Point)

Distance 7.5 km return.

DescriptionFlat easy grade along the beach and harbour foreshores. Mostly shared path through park and picnic areas. Part on-road.

Start/finishShared path on Ocean Parade, south side of Park Beach Bowling Club.

HighlightsThis is classic Coffs Harbour. Enjoy the beach, marina, jetty, parks and playgrounds.

The first section uses a shared path through parklands •behind Park Beach. Cross the bridge over Coffs Creek, then veer left and follow the shared path till you reach the North Wall carpark.

The next section is on-road, through the roundabout, and •along Jordan Esplanade, alongside Jetty Foreshores reserve.

Caution required on shared pathways – high pedestrian •usage. If accompanying children under 12 you could use the pathway through the reserve to avoid the roundabout.

There are many side-trip options along this route. Ride •to the Marina for fish and chips and fabulous views, and take a walk along the breakwater to Muttonbird Island.

At the foreshores walk out on the historic Jetty. Bring •your swimmers for a dip in the harbour.

The playgrounds and barbecues at the Jetty Foreshores •reserve are popular with families.This route connects with the Coffs Creek Cycleway route at the Pet Porpoise Pool, and with part of the ‘Eastside Circuit’.

Eastside Circuit

Route Park Beach to Howard Street loop

Distance 9km circuit.

DescriptionThis route makes use of many of the designated shared path/cycleways, and connects the CBD and Jetty area to the cycleway that heads south to Sawtell.

Start/finishNorth Park Beach – at the end of Ocean Parade – or anywhere along the route.

HighlightsThis route overlaps with the Harbourside route, and connects easily with the Coffs Creek Cycleway in a couple of places. Enjoy the picturesque path over Beacon Hill.

Much of this route uses shared path or bike lane •commuter options. The on-road sections are light traffic.

Caution required when crossing at roundabouts.•

Caution required on the Beacon Hill track. There are •steep sections at either end and the track can be slippery after rain due to wet leaves. Watch for pedestrians on this shared path.

The Beacon Hill path takes you through a picturesque •pocket of littoral rainforest. Take a breather along the top for an iconic view of the Harbour.

SaWTEll route details

Hogbin Drive Cycleway

Route Coffs to Toormina

Distance 6 km one way.

Description Separate shared path/cycleway, mostly flat, easy riding.

Start/finish Start Howard Street roundabout near the racecourse.

HighlightsGreat commuter route between Sawtell/Toormina and Coffs Harbour, passing the education campus, school, and sports fields.

Mainly flat, just one small hill south of the Coffs Harbour •Education Campus.

This is a shared path, so watch for pedestrians and •runners. Keep to the left.

Caution is required when crossing roads. Ride single file on •narrow bridges. Take care on uneven sections of pavement.

A popular on-road detour for extra distance and varied •scenery is via Christmas Bells Road, Aviation Drive and Airport Drive.

The Sawtell Connection

Route Sawtell road roundabout to Sawtell Headland

Distance 6 km one way.

Alternative route – take Wirrabilla Drive, Lalaguli Drive •and Werambie Street. Use the pathway at the end of Werambie Street to cut through to Hulberts Road. Cross the railway, then take Sixteenth Avenue, past Sawtell Railway Station, then ride along Boronia Street to First Avenue.

Caution required crossing Sawtell Road and the level crossing.•

Take a detour along Minorie Drive to check out the •Velodrome and Criterion Track.

Turn left into Boronia Street. The detour to Sawtell •Headland is a must for fantastic ocean and creek views.

Grab a coffee or a meal at one of the many cafes in First •Avenue or at the Surf Club.

Pacific Highway Cycleway Link

Route Hogbin Drive to Pine Creek Way via Pacific Highway cycle path

Distance 9 km one way.

DescriptionAlternative route from Coffs to Pine Creek Way, using the shared path alongside the Pacific Highway.

Start/finish From Howard Street to Lyons Road/Pine Creek Way

Highlights Mostly off-road, shared path. A great facility for cyclists.

Take the Hogbin Drive cycleway to CHEC (Education •Campus) roundabout. Turn right into Stadium Drive. There are bike lanes, but these are inconsistent. Caution required.

Join the off-road shared path at the south eastern corner •of the Pacific Highway roundabout.

Caution required when crossing Sawtell Road, Bruce •King Drive, and on the roundabout at Lyons Road if you continue on to Pine Creek Way.

A side-trip option is to take the path under the Highway •(watch the stairs) to explore semi-rural South Boambee Road (6km return) and Middle Boambee (via Lindsays Road.)

Lyons Road Link

Route Sawtell to start of Pine Creek Way

Distance 5 km one way.

DescriptionQuickest route from Sawtell to the Pacific Highway. Moderate traffic and some hills.

Start/finish First Avenue, Sawtell to the start of Pine Creek Way.

HighlightsSome great views over Bonville Creek. This route suits more experienced cyclists.

Take Bayldon Road past the golf course.•

BEllINGEN route details

BellingenPerrys Road Lookout is a popular starting point for rides in the Urunga/Bellingen areas. It is approximately 20 km from Coffs CBD, depending on the route taken. Add the following distances to estimate a great return ride from Coffs.

Mylestom River Ride

Route Perrys road lookout to Mylestom

Distance 13km return.

Description Down the hill, and then an easy 5km along the river.

Start/finish Perry’s Lookout to Mylestom return.

HighlightsLovely ride and a great destination, especially as an extended ride from Sawtell or Coffs.

Continue riding south down the Old Pacific Highway. Turn •left into Mylestom Drive – an easy, flat 5km trip along the river into Mylestom. Swim in the river pool enclosure or enjoy a picnic. There is a local General Store and Cafe.

Take an alternative route down Perrys Road and turn right •into Repton Road, winding down the hill to meet up with Mylestom Drive.

Yellow Rock Ride

Route raleigh circuit

Distance 18km loop.

Description Picturesque on-road ride along river flats and farmland. Light traffic but very bumpy!

Start/finish Perrys Road Lookout.

Highlights River views, woodland, mangroves and open farmland.

Head south along the Old Pacific Highway, over Raleigh •Bridge, and continue to the Pacific Highway. Ride for a short distance along the Highway, then turn left into Yellow Rock Road, over the level crossing and through a residential area.

Rejoin the Old Pacific Highway at Raleigh Bridge. •

Avoid the hill back up to Perrys Road by starting and •finishing in Raleigh.

Caution required on cattle grids, railway crossings, •and the narrow shoulder on the Pacific Highway.

Bello Loop

Route raleigh to Bellingen circuit.

Distance 45km return.

Description A challenging, on-road ride through ‘rolling countryside’.

Start/finish Start/finish at Perrys Road Lookout

HighlightsFarmland and forests along the Kalang and Bellinger Rivers, and the charm of Bellingen.

Take South Arm Road to Bellingen, returning via North •Bank Road.

Head south along Old Pacific Highway through Raleigh. •To avoid the current Pacific Highway, turn right onto Waterfall Way. Take Short Cut Road, then South Arm Road. Travel for 14km along the river. There are some hills.

Turn right onto Bowraville Road. It is another 6km into •Bellingen, where you will appreciate morning tea or lunch to reward your efforts. Take the opportunity to explore this popular and alternative heritage town.

Head north out of Bellingen by taking Bridge Street over •the river. Turn right at the roundabout and head east on Wheatley Street which becomes Northbank Road.

After about 12km you will rejoin the Old Pacific Highway •just north of Raleigh Bridge. This stretch has rough surfaces and a few hills.

A shorter and easier option (32km) is to ride Northbank •Road each way.

Promised Land Loop

Route Bellingen to Gleniffer return

Distance 34km circuit.

DescriptionOn-road route, includes approx. 8km of gravel. Suit MTB or hybrid. Significant hills, light traffic.

Start/finish Bellingen

HighlightsExperience tranquil green rolling pastures, bordered by lush sub-tropical bushland and backed by the mountain escarpment of the Great Dividing Range.

Head north over the river (Bridge Street) and turn left at the •roundabout. Wheatley Street then becomes Gleniffer Road.

Roses Road (veer left after 2km) is a worthwhile scenic •detour. It has some gravel sections.

On Gleniffer Road, cross the Never Never Creek, and then •continue north. The Promised Land Road loop is 10km – which includes about 5km of unsealed road.

There are popular swimming and picnic spots at Never •Never Creek.

WarrEll CrEEK To uruNGa uPGraDEThe section of the Pacific Highway between Warrell Creek and Urunga forms part of the Pacific Highway Upgrade program. When completed, the Upgrade will provide for a continuous local road from Warrell Creek to Raleigh which will provide an alternative route for cyclists. Should Old Coast Road or any other local road be impacted by the Upgrade, passage for vehicles (including pedestrians and cyclists) will be provided. The Wirrimbi ride route will be accessible at all times.

Riverside Amble

Route Nambucca V-wall to the highway, return.

Distance 6km- plus options to continue.

Description Leisurely pedal along the riverside.

Start/finish End of Wellington Drive.

HighlightsNambucca V-wall, boardwalks, shared paths, riverside parks.

First take a detour along the V-wall, a public graffiti-art •gallery along the breakwall.

Head back past the carpark, then dismount and walk •your bike along the narrow boardwalk.

Follow shared paths along the river banks, alongside •or through parks till you reach the Visitor Information Centre. The return ride from here would total about 6km.

Continue under the highway to reach the Cinema and •food outlets on western side of highway. A shared path takes you further south alongside the highway for some extra distance.

Or cross Riverside Drive and head north 1km along the •shared path. Take a left between 2 logs and continue through to Centenary Drive. Ride on road up to the roundabout on Mann Street.

Nambucca Heads is very hilly! But if you can handle •some hills, and riding on-road, you can have some fun exploring the town. You’ll be rewarded with some spectacular views.

Wirrimbi Ride

Route Macksville to Newee Creek via Wirrimbi.

Distance 16km loop or return ride.

DescriptionExperience the beauty of the Nambucca Valley. Take your MTB to fully appreciate the range of scenery.

Start/finish Ferry Park, Macksville, on north side of the river.

Highlights Riverside, and country scenery.

Part on-road, part unsealed (Old Coast Road). Or go •out and back the same way to stay on the tar.

Head west along the river, under the railway, then north •along Rodeo Drive.

At about 5 km turn right at Wirrimbi Church, then after •2.5km turn right onto Sidings Road (dirt).

Return the same way, or continue down Sidings Road, •across the railway, then turn right into Old Coast Road.

NaMBuCCa route details

Head south a few kilometres till you meet the Pacific Highway.•

Take care crossing the highway, turn right, ride for a few •hundred metres, then take a left into Nursery Road to cut across to the river.

Follow the shared path across the footbridge, then follow •the river back into town. There is a path under the bridge to take you back to Ferry Park.

Gumma Ride

Route Macksville to Gumma Dock/Boulton’s Crossing, return.

Distance 14km return ride along the river.

DescriptionOn road, easy, scenic ride along the river, some local traffic. Go a bit further on dirt for a great swimming spot in Warrell Creek.

Start/finish Macksville town centre,south eastern side of highway.

Highlights A great riverside ride that is mostly flat.

Head east along the south bank of the Nambucca River.•

At about 4km, take a side trip left into Figtree Road. •Gumma Dock is a peaceful picnic area right on the river.

Return the same way, or for a longer ride, continue along •Gumma Road.

Turn left at the signpost to Boultons Crossing. •

Follow this road about one kilometre (mostly dirt) to the •picnic and camping area. This is a popular canoeing and swimming spot.

Other ride suggestionsThere are numerous other popular rides enjoyed by locals in the Nambucca Valley. Many take advantage of the many unsealed roads throughout the rural countryside, or in patches of State Forest. Others will appeal to experienced road or touring cyclists.

Congarinni Ride

Head south from Macksville (Wallace Street, then Upper Warrell Road) Turn right - about 8km from Macksville - into Congarinni Road which is mostly unsealed. Return to Macksville along the river via Taylors Arm Road. (22km)

Nambucca Valley tour

Ride on-road between the main towns of Nambucca Heads, Macksville and Bowraville (40+km).

Keen cyclists might enjoy the challenge of the big ride out to the Pub With No Beer at Taylors Arm (52km return from Macksville).

Safe riding tips

Cyclists need to obey the same road rules and regulations as motorists. By following the rules and tips below you will be safer on the road.

Wear an approved bicycle helmet.•

Ride on the • left side of the road.

Obey traffic signs and road laws.•

Give way to pedestrians and other vehicles when •entering and crossing a road.

Use lights and reflective clothing when riding at night.•

You are allowed to ride two abreast, but not more than •1.5 metres apart.

You are allowed to cycle on a footpath only where •indicated by signage. (Shared pathways – see below).

In NSW children under 12 years of age can ride on a •footpath. An adult can also ride on a footpath provided they are supervising a child under 12 years old.

Look well ahead and scan the road for hazards.•

Be predictable - clearly signal your intentions.•

Use cycling facilities if provided. •

Give way to pedestrians at pedestrian crossings.•

Shared pathwaysSome of the routes in this brochure use shared pathways. These are identified by signs. CYCLISTS should:

Ride on the left side of the path.•

Control your speed.•

Sound your bell or call out ‘passing on the right’ as •you approach pedestrians.

Slow down, give way to pedestrians and pass on the right.•

RoundaboutsWith many roundabouts in our road system, it is important to know how to travel through them safely - particularly when you wish to turn right. There are two ways to do this:

You may turn right by signalling and then moving across •to the right hand (inner) lane when vehicle traffic behind you allows, or

You can negotiate the roundabout through the left hand •(outer) lane, but you must give way to vehicle traffic at each exit point.

Cycling on rural roadsA number of routes in this booklet are in rural or semi-rural areas. The terrain in these areas is undulating and the roads have a range of shoulder widths, or none at all. Some of these routes are more suited to experienced, sport or touring cyclists with above-average fitness levels. Cyclists may encounter steep climbs and fast descents on narrow roads. Extreme caution should be taken.

Bike Frame Ensure it’s the correct size! Feet should be flat on ground when straddling the bike. Balls of feet should reach the ground when on the seat

Bell Attached and able to be rung loudly to warn others

Cables Firm and not frayed on the ends

Bottle Cages Tightly attached and with a full bottle of water

Tyres Pumped and checked for small glass or small rocks

Shoes Enclosed footwear with a stiff sole and laces tucked away

Brakes Grip the wheel firmly and are not loose when squeezed

Clothes Bright for daytime, light for night time and firm fitting so not to get caught in the chain

Helmet Snug fit with strap firmly underneath chin

reflectors On pedals, spokes and on seat post for visibility

Carry a toolkit, with a spare tube and pump. Make sure •you know how to change a tube.

A pannier is an even better option than a backpack for •carrying food, jackets, wet weather gear.

Wear bike gloves to protect your hands.•

Don’t forget the sunscreen and sunglasses.•
