JANUARY 2018 PREACHING AT A GLANCE
Sunday, January 7 – Epiphany Sunday (Baptism of the Lord) with Holy Communion Rev. William “Bill” Obalil Preaching Sermon Title: A Holy "Maybe" Scripture: Matthew 2:1-12, 16 Sermon idea: God is often portrayed as the great keeper of cosmic order. But the story of the magi reveals God as the great disruptor of history.
Sunday, January 14 – Mission Sunday - Packing Cookies forthe Night Ministry in Chicago Scripture: Matthew 25:31-46 Speaker: Sally Mydill Worship Leader: Pastor Betsy Evans Ingstrup Video: Night Ministry (Glowing Forward)
Sunday, January 21 – Third Sunday After the Epiphany (Laity Sunday) Celebrating the lay people’s ministry at Prince of Peace and beyond. Speaker: Judy Pohlman (Lay Delegate Northern Illinois Conference) Worship Leader: Pastor Betsy Evans Ingstrup
Sunday, January 28 – Fourth Sunday After the Epiphany (Recognition of 2017 Outgoing Officers and Installation of 2018 Officers) Sermon Title: “Come, Follow Me!” Scripture: Matthew 4:12-23 Synopsis: God calls ordinary people, who have open minds and willing hearts to obey God’s will. The first disciples were not given guarantees that their lives would be easier once they follow Jesus. But they still gave themselves to faithful discipleship. Why? They saw something in Jesus that was inviting, trusting and worth giving their lives for, for the sake of the work of the kingdom. What do we learn from this passage today? Jesus chose those who are willing to obey the call.

A NEW YEAR’S NOTE FROM PASTOR CERNA…
• Tuesday, January 23 - 10am-3pm • Thursday, January 25 - 10am-12noon; 2pm-3pm • Friday, January 26 - 10am-3pm
• Tuesday, January 30 - 10am-3pm • Wednesday, January 31 – 3pm-5pm • Thursday, February 1 - 10am-12noon; 2pm-3pm • Friday, February 2 - 10am-3pm
Happy New Year, Everyone!
I trust you all had a wonderful Christmas celebration with your family. I pray for a wonderful new beginning for you and your family and for our church.
I'd like to thank all the outgoing 2017 officers of the church, and welcome those who are returning and new officers in 2018. You’ll find the list of these new and returning officers under the 2018 Lay Leadership Roster on pages 3 and 4 of this newsletter. Those members whose name are listed under 2020 are serving in 2018, again in 2019, and then finally, again in 2020.
There are some committees where we still need people to serve. One of those that is critical to our church’s smooth functioning is the Board of Trustees, which is co-chaired by George Evans and Matthew McGregor. If you’re passionate about buildings and grounds, this is the right committee for you. Also, we’re looking for people who are very enthusiastic and enjoy fundraising to join our Stewardship Committee chaired by Karen Briskey. If you love working with children, we’re looking for people to join our Children’s Ministry Committee chaired by Ann Robert. If you’re interested in serving on any committees, or if you have any comments, please talk to or email me. I would love to talk to you.
Prince of Peace is blessed to have wonderful officers each year. Many of you have been on your committee(s) for just about a year, and others have been serving for several years. No matter how long or short a time you’ve been a part of your committee, we appreciate you.
As for our committee chairs, thank you for accepting the responsibility to lead one or more committees. As a chairperson, you are now a member of the Church Council, the highest ranking committee of our church, the one that makes important decisions about our congregational life and ministry together.
The Church Council is chaired by Betsy Boswell, and the first meeting in 2018 will be on Tuesday, January 9, at 7:15pm in the church sanctuary. At the Church Council meeting, every committee leader is expected to give a report or update about their committee's activities or plans. If you are not able to attend the Church Council meeting, it is your responsibility as the chair to ask someone to represent you and your committee.
The committee chairpersons have a lot of responsibilities. I will be available to meet with the chairs or members of the committees to clarify issues about your roles and your committee's goals. Although I will be on Renewal Leave January 1-21, I’m listing here some dates that I'm available to meet with you individually or as a group for an hour at the church:
Please email me with your proposed meeting time, so I can schedule our time together.
In closing, I would like to invite you to church on Sunday, January 28, at the 9:30am Worship Service. We will be recognizing our outgoing 2017 officers and installing you, our 2018 church officers, that day.
Thank you. I look forward to working with you in 2018. God bless everyone!
Grace and peace,

Thank you for your outstanding support of Prince of Peace thoughout the last few years. With your support we have been able to satisfy our Conference Apportionment for several years in a row. We also have accomplished Mission-related tasks, including Youth Mission Trip and community services for the needy.
Prayerfully, I hope we may continue to glorify the Holy Trinity with our contributions. To date there are 51 Pledging Units, totaling $126,870.00 for the year 2018. Thank you to all who have pledged.
If you have not submitted your 2018 Pledge Card, it's not too late to do so. 2018 Pledge Cards are available on the church lobby tables, or you can call the Church Office to mail one to you. Thanks again for your generosity.
Peace be with you during this Holiday season. Charlie Waite Financial Secretary
PASTOR CERNA IS ON RENEWAL
LEAVE
In The United Methodist Church, renewal leaves are granted to pastors who have served at least seven years
under appointment. The Book of Discipline encourages churches to grant these seasons of renewal to hard-working pastors, not so they will do special projects or undertake studies, but to spend time reconnecting with God during an extended Sabbath time. Pastor Cerna, with the support and encouragement of Bishop Sally Dyck and the rest of the Northern Illinois Conference Cabinet, our Elgin District Superintendent Darneather Murph-Heath, and the POP Staff Parish Relations Committeeand Church Council, will have six weeks of renewal leave in 2018.
Pastor Cerna will be on the first half of her renewal leave from January 1 through January 21. The second half will be taken sometime in the spring.
For pastoral emergencies during this time, the Rev. David Lagos-Fonseca at Our Savior's UMC in Schaumburg will cover for her. He can be reached at 815-474-1870.
For pastoral issues and concerns not of an emergency nature. Pastor Betsy Evans Ingstrup will be on call.
The church building and grounds will be under George Evans’ charge.
As usual the church office will be open Tuesdays through Fridays, from 9:30am to 12:30pm. Call Carole Davenport at 847-439-0668 or email her at [email protected] for general church questions or if you want email notifications sent to the church about members’ and friends’ need for prayer and announcements.
Pray for Pastor Cerna during her time of rest and renewal, that she may be refreshed and her faith may be deepened.

Christmas Memories & Words of Thanks
I'd like to say a big "Thank you" to all of the kids and teenagers who performed so well in the Christmas pageant. They put in a lot of hard work rehearsing and did a fantastic job. I also appreciated all of the help I received from Tammy Miller, Ann Roberts, Janice Such, and Betsy Boswell. I hope everyone enjoyed the performance and its message that Jesus never changes and is always relevant to our lives.

The Christmas Giving Tree For the Children of ChildServ
Thanks to everyone who participated in this year’s Christmas Giving Tree. All of the tags on the Giving Tree were taken and returned (on time!) attached to an array of clothing, toys, games, books, puzzles and gift certificates that insured that the ChildServ children were not forgotten. Just imagine the joy on the faces of these children when they opened these thoughtfully chosen presents. We hope you experienced a sense of joy this Christmas as well.

Update from your POP Social ACT!ON Committee
Helping to make the world a better place
"Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only
love can do that." -- The Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.
In honor of the Martin Luther King, Jr. Day of Service, we will be preparing baggies of cook-
ies after a short worship service on Sunday January 14, 2018. Cookies will be provided, but if
you would like to donate store-bought cookies, please place in the box in the lobby. Any fla-
vor without nuts is welcome, but chocolate chip, sugar, and oatmeal are the most popular.
The cookies will be distributed to the homeless through The Night Ministry. This 41-year old Chi-
cago-based organization works to provide housing, health care and human connection to
those struggling with poverty or homelessness. There are about 25,000 youth and young adults
without housing in Chicago, with 32% to 40% identifying as part of the LGBTQ community. The
POP Lending Library will feature books on homelessness and those living in poverty.
Plastic #6 cups are now accepted by Terracycle. These are Solo-type cups of any brand,
size, or color. Just place your empty rinsed cups in the Terracycle bin, along with your other
unrecyclables, such as empty toothpaste, deodorant, and
cosmetic containers.
Here’s another place to recycle your electronics year
‘round: eWorks, 1201 Estes Street, in Elk Grove Village. Not on-
ly does this help the environment, it provides employment op-
portunities for people with disabilities.
Get you reusable water bottles, now in green. Reusable
bottles are better for the environment than disposable water
bottles and the imprint indicates that “We Welcome All.” Get yours for only $5 and show that
Prince of Peace cares about people and the Earth. Just ask Marci Evans, Pastor Cerna, or
members of the Social Action Committee for your bottle.
At the November Charge Conference, DS Murph-Heath described the work of The Com-
mission on a Way Forward which was established at the 2016 General Conference to exam-
ine and possibly revise paragraphs in the Book of Discipline concerning human sexuality, and
to explore options for the unity of the church. The Commission has provided three options,
each model based on one or more core values. To learn more about the options, see http://
www.umc.org/news-and-media/bishops-uphold-values-of-mission-unity-space-contextuality-
in-interim-repor Pastor Cerna will provide more information as it becomes available.
Coming events: For Black History Month Pastor Cerna has invited Bishop Ivan Hartsfield of
Faith Covenant Fellowship Ministry to speak on Sunday February 4th, and our very own Erlene
Collins-Browning to speak on February 18th. To celebrate the 3rd anniversary of becoming a
Reconciling Congregation, Anna Voinovich will speak on March 18th. Anna is a student at
Garrett Evangelical Seminary and is currently serving an internship at Barrington UMC. Bishop
Sally Dyck visits us on Earth Sunday, April 22, 2018. Prior to the Bishop’s visit, Pastor Cerna will
lead a Lenten study on the Bishop’s book A Hopeful Earth: Faith, Science, and the Message of
Jesus. A copy is available in the Social Action Lending Library in the lobby.

ECO-TIP of the Month
Brought to you by the POP Social ACT!ON Committee
The winter season is in full force as we enter the new year. As the burden of snow and ice become a daily hassle, here are a few tips for making your snow and ice removal less damaging to our soil and water resources.
If you are using a chemical ice melt, be sure to read the ingredients rather than the sweeping claims advertised on the front of bags. Most importantly, avoid sodium chloride.
There are many salt-free options out there!
Consider the neighborhood dogs and find pet-friendly ice melt. If it’s qualified to be pet friendly, it’s also much better for our soil and water quality.
Lydia Circle will not meet during January and February. Watch for a March meeting announcement later in 2018.
Lydia Circle
A very special thank you to all our
