Welcome to St. Rose
We are proud to celebrate the centennial of our church
this year. St. Rose is a historical landmark of the city of
Quincy. This church is considered as representative of
the Venetian Gothic style: a mix of Gothic,
Romanesque, and Byzantine styles. The 1912 stained
glass windows are characteristic of the Munich Pictorial
Style. This style is characterized by almost lifelike
images of saints and figures with landscape back-
grounds.
Before the church was reopened, 3 marble altars, a
matching altar rail, and a pulpit were installed. On June
10, 2012, our bishop will consecrate these altars. Do not
miss this beautiful ceremony! It will begin at 10 AM. It
will include the celebration of a Pontifical Mass with the
conferring of the sacrament of confirmation and an
outdoor procession of the Blessed Sacrament as we
celebrate the solemnity of Corpus Christi.
In the fall of 2012, we will begin a thorough restoration
of our windows. If you wish to know more about this
project, do not hesitate to take a copy of our Restoration
brochure in the vestibule of the church and/or to contact
us.
As St. Rose Latin Mass Community is not a parish but a
chaplaincy, when you join it, you remain a member of
your local parish. To join, just give us a call. After both
Sunday Masses, the community meets in the hall to
socialize. Everyone is welcome! Coffee & Donuts are
available.

CURRENT THREATS TO RELIGIOUS LIBERTY
Pope Benedict XVI spoke earlier this year about his worry
that religious liberty in the United States is being weakened.
He called religious liberty the “most cherished of American
freedoms.” However, unfortunately, our most cherished
freedom is under threat. Consider the following:
● HHS mandate for contraception, sterilization, and abortion
inducing drugs. The mandate of the Department of Health and
Human Services forces religious institutions to facilitate and
fund a product contrary to their own moral teaching. Further,
the federal government tries to define which religious
institutions are “religious enough” to merit protection of their
religious liberty.
● Catholic foster care and adoption services. Boston, San
Francisco, the District of Columbia, and the State of Illinois
have driven local Catholic Charities out of the business of
providing adoption or foster care services—by revoking their
licenses, by ending their government contracts, or both—
because those Charities refused to place children with same-
sex couples or unmarried opposite-sex couples who cohabit.
● Discrimination against Catholic humanitarian services.
After years of excellent performance by the U.S. Conference
of Catholic Bishops’ Migration and Refugee Services (MRS)
in administering contract services for victims of human
trafficking, the federal government changed its contract
specifications to require MRS to provide or refer for
contraceptive and abortion services in violation of Catholic
teaching.
● Forcing religious groups to host same-sex “marriage” or
civil union ceremonies. A New Jersey judge recently found
that a Methodist ministry violated state law when the ministry
declined to allow two women to hold a “civil union”
ceremony on its private property. Further, a civil rights
complaint has been filed against the Catholic Church in
Hawaii by a person requesting to use a chapel to hold a same-
sex “marriage” ceremony.
Is our most cherished freedom truly under threat? Yes,
Pope Benedict XVI has recognized that various attempts to
limit the freedom of religion in the U.S. are a serious concern.
This threat to religious freedom is larger than any single case
or issue and has its roots in secularism in our culture. The
Holy Father has asked for the laity to have courage to counter
secularism that would “delegitimize the Church’s
participation in public debate about the issues which are
determining the future of American society.”

rectory). Thanks to Aaron Baugher for the amount of time
required to type and set up the booklet!
RELICS
During the ceremony of consecration, relics of saints are
sealed in the altars. For the main altar, we placed back the
very same relics which were already in the altar. They are
contained in 3 reliquaries contained in a metal box under a
small stone.
1. Apostle reliquary: Ss. Peter, Paul, James the Major, John,
Andreas, Simon, Thaddeus, Mathias, Thomas, James the
Minor, Philip, Bartholomew, Matthew, Mark the Evangelist,
Luke the Evangelist & Barnabas.
2. Women martyrs reliquary: Ss. Agnes, Barbara, Novatiana,
Cecilia, Agatha, Lucia, Victoria, Catherine of Alexandria.
3. Jesuits confessors and martyrs reliquary: Ss. Ignatius of
Loyola, Francis Xavier, Alphonsus Rodriguez, Peter Claver,
John Berchmans, Andrzej (Andrew) Bobola (Polish Martyr),
Charles Spinula (Martyr in Japan).
The side altars have only one relic contained in a stone. St.
Joseph’s Altar has a relic of St. Thérèse of the Child Jesus.
Unfortunately, we do not know whose saint is the relic in Our
Lady’s Altar.
