Anzac Day 25 April

Joshua Dyer (aged 14) was tasked at school to write a poem for Remembrance Day.

ONE THOUSAND MEN ARE WALKING

One thousand men are walking

Walking side by side

Singing songs from home

The spirit as their guide

they walk toward the light milord

they walk towards the sun

they smoke and laugh and smile together

no foes to outrun

these men live on forever

in the hearts of those they saved

a nation truly grateful

for the path of peace they paved

they march as friends and comrades

but they do not march for war step closer to salvation a tranquil steady corps the meadows lit with golden beams a beacon for the brave the emerald grass untrampled a reward for what they gave they dream of those they left behind and know they dream of them forever in those poppy fields there walks one thousand men

Joshua Dyer

Lest we forget

COVID-19 Update

Queensland Health has reached it’s first milestone in the delivery of the

COVID vaccine as over 2000 Queenslanders have now received their first

doses.

On Friday last week, Cairns Hospital came online and Brisbane’s second

Pfizer hub at the STARS Facility at Herston is operational.

This week the two remaining hubs at Sunshine Coast University Hospital

and Townsville University Hospital have started vaccinating critical

healthcare and quarantine workers as Phase 1a continues.

The Queensland Government website is regularly updated to provide

Queenslanders with information about the vaccine. It should be consulted

regularly and is located here: https://www.qld.gov.au/health/conditions/

health-alerts/coronavirus-covid-19/protect-yourself-others/covid-19-

vaccine

KEY FACTS

• A vaccine is the best way to protect Queenslanders from COVID-19 –

the Palaszczuk Government wants all Queenslanders to have access to the

vaccine quickly and safely.

• This is a national vaccine rollout, led by the Federal Government and

implemented by states and territories.

• This is a global effort, and supply is limited across the world. Australia

must prioritise who receives the vaccination, and when.

• In Queensland, the first doses of vaccine are being delivered by

Queensland Health through six Pfizer hubs to front-line healthcare

workers, police officers, and hotel quarantine workers.

• These hubs are in areas that are close to points of entry for

international arrivals or where quarantine hotels are located – these are

the areas considered as the greatest risks.

DO YOU BELIEVE IT?

Oberonia palmicola

Fairy orchid are epiphytes with

indiscernible or creeping

rhizomes and tufts of

unusual fan like or iris like

growths, anchored by thin

roots.

Each growth consists of a

few flattened leaves which

overlap at the base and

spread at the tips. Thin arching inflorescences arise from the shoot apex

and carry tiny flowers, usually arranged in distinct whorls, but sometimes

in a spiral.

The flowers, which are carried upside down, have tiny spreading or cupped sepals and petals and a 3 lobed labellum that usually has a small sunken pit at its base.

An important native species

LOCAL QUAILS

The stubble quail (Coturnix

pectoralis) is a native Australian

species which is the most common

quail species in Australia. The stubble

quail is a ground dwelling bird that is

characterised by its dark brown

feathers with a cream coloured strip

down the centre of each feather

giving rise to stripes down the length

of the bird. It is a plump species that

is larger than other native quails.

The brown quail is a plump, stocky bird growing to a length of 17 to 22 centimetres and weight of 75 to 140 grams. The colour is quite variable over the bird's wide range. The male is red brown speckled with black on the head and upper neck and mainly red brown on back and wings. The underparts range from buff or rufous to brown, but always with fine black chevron shaped barring. The tail is short, dark brown with yellowish barring.

A shy bird—have you been lucky enough to observe one recently?

RECYCLING IN MAPLETON

SPECTACLES ARE COLLECTED AT THE MAPLETON COMMUNITY LIBRARY.

The Mapleton Bowls Club is collecting bottles and cans with the refunds going to sponsor an event at the Club. There is a convenient collection point which is a wheelie bin placed at the foot of the entry stairs. This bin can be distinguished from others as it has a round hole in its roof where you can pop-in the recycle items. QLD container refund scheme in the school car park. All proceeds go to the Mapleton State School P&C. All your donations would be gratefully received and will go towards resources for our school and students. Mapleton Men’s Shed is also a receiving depot for recycling cans and bottles. These may be left in the sulo bins in front of the storage shed in Mapleton Forest Drive.
