GCSE Results 2012GCSE Results 2012
We are delighted to celebrate the best ever GCSE results for
our students this year, with 60% gaining 5A*-C including
English and Maths, and over 80% achieving 5A*-C.
Cecilia Carlisle gained 16 A and A* as well as an AAB in AS
Maths which means an A overall in AS Maths a whole year
early.
We are also delighted with our Year 9 and 10 students who
had outstanding GCSE results. Matthew Walker already has
7 GCSE grades A and A* at the start of year 11 with Ellen
Curnow close behind with 6.
Well done everyone!
Curriculum Enrichment Week 2012Curriculum Enrichment Week 2012
Wow what a week it was with pupils going all over the county, country and
further afield. The variety of activities was fantastic and it shows how great
our staff are to be able to provide such variety. Some of the activities were
clearly character building having to tree surf, wild camp on Dartmoor in our
lovely summer weather and eat some very strange things indeed. They were
also extremely creative and I was lucky enough to see some amazing
animations, art work, skim boards with amazing decals and even rollercoaster
designs. It was also great to hear such fantastic reports from members of
staff on how brilliant pupils had been. We had reports from people in the
wider community and one lady wrote in to say how polite our pupils had been on
the Isles of Scilly. A very big thank you to all the staff for making it happen
and we will be doing it all again next year!

Work Experience 2012Work Experience 2012
Once again our year 10 pupils went out on work
experience and were great ambassadors for the
school.
Pupils worked in schools, hotels and RNAS
Culdrose as well as local businesses where they
gained confidence and an insight into the work-
place.
We are very appreciative of the employers who
gave up their time to have our pupils and hope that
they enjoyed the week too.
9JLP raised over £350 for the RNLI9JLP raised over £350 for the RNLI
Last term, through various sponsored events,
including a silence and indoor rowing of the
length of the Tamar, 9JLP raised over £350 for
the RNLI and as a reward they were given a
fascinating tour of the St Agnes Inshore
Lifeboat Station and Perranporth Surf Life
Saving Club (in school time as a bonus!).
They were given a rescue demonstration at the
beach with a race to a "victim" between a
swimmer and a jetski, which was narrowly won
by the jetski in the rough conditions!
Med Trip 2012Med Trip 2012
This year’s trip to Chateau du Tertre in France was an action-packed
adventure from start to finish. Activities included - white water
canoeing, raft building, an overnight bush craft adventure, rifle
shooting, archery, rock climbing, fencing, orienteering, high ropes,
the trapeze, assault course, team problem-solving, abseiling,
excursions to St. Malo, Mont Saint Michel (France's St. Michael's
Mount), Bayonne and a trip to a water/theme park.
The evenings at the Chateau were jam packed with entertainments ranging from a French themed foody
night, table tennis, air hockey, basketball, football, rugby, rounders, you name it...they did it.
Students from Year 7-9 all proudly wore their Med Trip 'T' shirts and made many new friends, not only with
each other and the staff, but with other schools.
Probably the highlight for Mr. Webb and Mrs. Wills were the faces on the students when they realised that
their overnight camp was actually on the Chateau's grounds and not in a farm miles away from centre (as
fibbed to them by PGL staff). Basically after a day’s canoeing the students had managed to paddle all the
way back to the Chateau but didn't realise it as the riverside was hidden by the woods surrounding their
accommodation. However, learning how to carve wood, collect firewood (some students took this to the
extreme with dragging back small trees !), shelter building and best of all barrel body-surfing.

Kneehigh Theatre was invited to the Academy last Wednesday to do a workshop for the Arts Award students supported by Kirsty Smith who has dedicated her time helping the students. Anna Marie Murphy who has written plays for Kneehigh for many years took the workshop and was thrilled by the students’ participation. She said “I thoroughly enjoyed the workshop myself, I thought they were a great bunch, and really willing to have a go. Tell your headmistress I was very impressed indeed with it all. I thought it was great she came in to meet me”
The students have been given free tickets to watch the up coming Kneehigh production of “Steptoe and Son”.

Arts AwardArts Award
At the end of last term Miss
Smith took the last group of
Arts Award students to
Rosemellin School to
complete part D of their
portfolios. Jacob Colgan
11MH, Lucy Talbot 11JB,
Charlotte Talbot 11JB,
Kieran Burley 11ASL and
Hannah Mead 10DSW took
their instruments to
Rosemellin school and lead
a music workshop for half of
the session.
Katie Johns 9TS, Taylor
Boyd-Wallis 9TS and Kiera
Smitheram 10SJT led a drama workshop using 'hats and mellow drama' for the other half of
the session. Mr Hart and the year 2 music students thoroughly enjoyed their time with the
Pool students and would like to be involved in more workshops in the future.
ShoeboxesShoeboxes Mrs Smith and her little busy elves are already thinking about the Samaritan's Purse
Shoebox Appeal which will be launched next week. Thank you so much for those who
participated in any way last year.
Every year the students, staff and parents respond so generously . In order to help the
organisation of this Appeal, we need empty shoeboxes to start off the challenge for each
tutor group to fill at least 5 boxes. Last year Key Stage 3 students collected a total of 179
which were sent to Eastern European countries by our local repre-
sentatives based in Camborne.
The Samaritan’s Purse website gives details of suitable
contents for the boxes and a clip of where the boxes go and
whom they benefit .
If you would like to help in any way, please contact Mrs Smith,
Humanities Office.
Trip of a Lifetime to the ParalympicsTrip of a Lifetime to the Paralympics
Four students from Years 9 and 10 visited London last week to watch
the Paralympics Track and Field session in the Olympic Stadium.
Whilst there they had a trip on the London Eye, a visit and tour
around the Houses of Parliament, watched a spectacular evening
show at Piccadilly Circus and of course, the highlight, visited the
Paralympic/Olympic site and watched the Athletics.
All four students have represented the school at County, Regional
and two at National schools level. The medal haul at National
Schools level would be right up there with the best. These are the
Paralympians of
tomorrow, so seeing
Oscar Pistorius (The
Blade runner) and
David Weir (The
Weirwolf) who are
legends in the sport
was very inspiring.
