2014 was the first full year for a PCAWA Board, and although there were many challenges the year concluded on a positive note. The PCAWA Board is made up of both elected and appointed members, and many hours and much time is put into the task. I wish to thank those who moved on during 2014 and those who are now with us for their support and generosity of spirit to give their time to PCAWA. During 2014 the Pony Club Australia Executive Council also became a Board along with some other State bodies. PCAWA is pleased to have led the way for Pony Club in Australia and will strive to remain up to date in all aspects of governance.

ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING

PCAWA  Annual  General  Meeting  –  06.02.15

Following the very successful National Championships hosted in WA during 2013 we were honoured to host the first ever International Tetrathlon to be run in Australia. This exchange involves touring as well as the four Events of Tetrathlon. WA excelled in producing an unforgettable tour and every competition venue was impressive and admired by our visitors. WA also hosted the Pony Club Junior National Mounted Games Championship, again a wonderful public venue at the Royal Show and an excellent event and Interstate trip for competitors. Across these two competitions WA Pony Club members and supporters offered a total of more than 90 loan horses. Congratulations and "thank you", to all who organised these events and to those who stepped forward to participate by loaning their horse or pony, these events could not have happened without you. PCAWA depends on its committees to organise and run its State Championships but unfortunately it is increasingly difficult to find people willing to be part of these committees. However, with hard work and commitment all five of the State Championships went ahead and were successful. Thank you to the hard working committees, sponsors, volunteers, parents and participants who made this possible. The extremely hardworking Coaching Panel continues to seek more members. The contribution by the Panel in all forms of education for members and Coaches, along with the new, innovative and extremely active Gear Check panel is recognised and appreciated. These groups steer the course for many of the ridden rulings in PCAWA, this is a difficult and accountable task with outcomes that are felt throughout the organisation. The ever-popular weekend of learning in early February did not disappoint in 2014, when we joined with RDA to host an eastern States presenter along with many local presenters for an informative State Coaching School. PCAWA was also extremely proud to have a member selected, after gruelling examinations, to join an Australian Pony Club team to compete in the Quiz competition of horse management in Kentucky USA. Congratulations to all those who achieved an Efficiency Certificate during 2014, for this is the backbone of Pony Club - "The Pony Club Rally", where the learning is started, the friendship and fellowship is enjoyed around the focal point of the horse. The often thankless task of Club Executives is vital to success of the organisation as the Individual Clubs collectively "make" the organisation. While some worthy individuals are presented with awards, many are not, and while I applaud the many award winners throughout 2014, be assured each and everyone of you are appreciated for your efforts. Work goes on tirelessly behind the scenes to continue to upgrade or renovate standards and training. Following our busy years of hosting International and National events, it is now time to turn towards our own systems within the organisation and pay due attention as deserved. This will be our focus during 2015 both within the Office and throughout the organisation. To conclude I would like to thank our principal partners and sponsors, Healthway, and the Department of Sport and Recreation for the ongoing assistance and guidance. Thank you also to our many Sponsors who do so much in kind to assist PCAWA. To our Office Staff, again thank you for your efforts and versatility in being able to cope with so many varied tasks that come your way. Conditions in the Office are not always easy and we recognise your tenacity, patience and tireless efforts. We hope to go forward into 2015 with all members understanding that PCAWA is "their" organisation and they can make a difference by stepping forward and getting involved, observing regulations and seeking advice. With this attitude you will make a difference. Judy Rose

ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING

PCAWA  Annual  General  Meeting  –  06.02.15

2. Financial Report

Overall - 2014 saw the association post a net profit before depreciation and non-recurring expenses of $62,288, a 30% decrease on the 2013 result of $88,819. After accounting for depreciation and non-recurring expenses, $50,649 was transferred to accumulated funds, an increase on 2013 of $24,033. Revenue – The association revenue in 2014 was similar to that recorded in 2013. The contributing factors did however change. 2014 saw additional sponsorship received from Healthways and DSR (Grant for the IT Upgrade) and a drop in the events surplus due to the running of the International Tetrathlon ($20k impact). In comparison, the 2013 results saw the $50k benefit of holding the National Championships. Expenses – Expenses in 2014 increased by 8% from $330k to $360k. The two significant items were:

1) Insurance - A 3% increase ($2,000), which is in line with CPI.

2) Wages and associated oncosts ($26,000) – In 2014 the office had a full complement of staff for the entire year and was also required to comply with the increasing superannuation obligations. Super obligations have risen from 9% in the first half of 2013 to 9.5% in the second half of 2014.

Financial Position – 2015 will see the association commence the year with increased cash reserves and a decrease in payables on 2014. Audit Report – The accounts of PCAWA were audited by Ron Pursey from Plantaganet Partners. A qualified opinion was issued in relation to membership and sponsorship revenue. There is no control over these items until the funds are received. Apart from this qualification, the opinion is that the reports for 2014 present fairly and in accordance with generally accepted accounting principles. Melissa Foster

3. Events Coordinator Report

The event calendar is so full of events these days that it is really difficult to plan events without clashing with other disciplines and clubs and EWA events. This is a problem that not only we have from a PCAWA State Champ perspective and squad dates but is a common problem for clubs around the state. Whilst this may provide a huge choice of events for riders to attend it is a logistical nightmare for officials and club organisers. For PCAWA Officials especially in eventing the number of events being offered now is a huge strain on our small number of Technical Delegates. The Eventing Committee is constantly on the lookout for more trainee TD’s and hopefully some more will come through the ranks in 2015. A large number of events across the state also means a lot of volunteer labour is needed and I would like to commend all event secretaries for their efforts in the past year and hope we see you again in 2015. The 2014 year began with the Tet and although numbers were down this year the small but enthusiastic committee ably led by Grant Gaasdalen did a super job in providing an enjoyable and entertaining weekend. Tet unfortunately because of its’ timing faces an uphill challenge with riders trying to qualify in time and this is something the Tet committee are looking to remedy. The Showjumping Champs were once again held in May at the SEC and the good numbers attending had to endure a rather unpleasant weather all weekend. Another small working committee is our PCAWA SJ Committee and they put an enormous effort into bring you a top weekend of jumping at the SEC. The dressage Committee this year saw only one member remain from last years’ committee who were a very seasoned bunch at running the Champs. This meant that this year our new and very enthusiastic committee were on a steep learning curve from the outset in running this event. Unfortunately just before the Champs I became ill with myelitis in my spinal cord (inflammation) and ended up trying to direct the committee from my hospital bed a Murdoch! Anita Schou (Chair) and her team most ably led by Alarna Thirley did a great job and post event had many compliments on how the event had run.

ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING

PCAWA  Annual  General  Meeting  –  06.02.15

Whilst not involved directly I must congratulate the International Tet Committee for hosting a great event and providing teams from Ireland, England, New Zealand and America with a great tour that really showcased WA to our visitors. With me now in hospital for the rest of the year Emma Lawrie was bought into the office to assist with my role. While I assisted as I could from hospital Emma did a great job liaising with the committees and assisting with the Eventing Champs, Active Riding Runoffs and Champs. Eventing Champs were once again held at Narrogin and our small committee with the help of the Narrogin team once again put on a true State Championship that had some fantastically supported entertainment on the Saturday night. The highlight of the Active Riding year was the holding of the National Junior Championships at Perth Royal Show. What a great setting for the champs and from all reports a great success. Congratulations to the WA Junior Team who took off the championship and once again the Active Riding Committee put on a very well run event over the four days of the tour and I’m sure all riders enjoyed the river cruise dinner and riding in the atmosphere of the Royal Show. Our sincere thanks to the RAS in partnering with us in this event. 2014 saw the introduction of a new showjumping series run along the same lines as the eventing and dressage series which are continuing to grow in popularity each year. This year being the first year of the SJ series we did not expect huge numbers of events or riders attending but by the end of the year were pleased with the results and I can see this series developing to be just as popular as dressage and eventing. We thank Europa Saddlery Direct and Saddleworld Midland for their continued support of these series and we look to continuing to make each series stronger in 2015. 2015 will also see our next National Championship and as such the Development and National Squads will have important roles to play. With my hospitalisation in 2014 unfortunatley the Development squad after a very successful Camp in March 2014 was a little neglected and I look forward to working with the new Development/Nationals Committee to produce a series of clinics and training days for our squads in 2015. A word you are seeing a lot in my report is SMALL. Most of our committees apart from the Active Riding Committee have dwindled in numbers in the last two years. Existing long term members are becoming burnt out and although love their roles with PCAWA feel they have “done their bit” and are now becoming time poor or wish to move on to other family commitments. I would sincerely implore people who have some time on their hands and an interest in a discipline to please consider putting your name down for one of our discipline committees. Most committees meet once a month and are responsible for the rules and regulations in running their discipline as well as running their State Championship. Many hands make light work so if you can help out we would love to see you on deck for 2015. On a personal note I would like to say thank-you to the Board for your support and all members who have wished me well during my illness. I am back on deck now and looking forward to a fantastic 2015. Jacqui Moon

4. Membership & Club Development Officer Report

Statistics Club with largest number of Riding Members – Wallangarra Riding & Pony Club Club with smallest number of Riding Members – Bindoon Range & Katanning & District Pony Club Club with the most Associate Riders – Eastern Hills H&PC Club with the most male Riding Members - Eastern Hills H&PC Most remote Club – Broome West Kimberley Pony Club Club with the strongest Members without Ponies Program- Blackwood Horse & Pony Club Newest Club – Herdsman Pony Club 2014 saw a decrease in Membership, the first decrease seen since I started the position in 2010. This I believe is a direct result from the turbulent year experienced by the Association in 2013. 2015 is the year I believe the Association is ready to regroup and move forward with innovations and benefits to our Members.

ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING

PCAWA  Annual  General  Meeting  –  06.02.15

With several initiatives already in place such as the Connection Panel and PCAWA Rider Survey I’m looking forward to seeing the Association grow and develop further. Membership 2014 saw the trialling of a new online database. This system will be continued in 2015 with a few changes to make administration in the office less time consuming and less delay in the issuing of those ever-important Membership Cards! Handbook Quite a few administrational and governance changes have been introduced with the change over from Executive/Council to Board. The 2015 Handbook will assist Members, Member Clubs and Zones by providing up to date information on processes that are required by the Association. Marketing & Promotion of PCAWA The success of the black and gold Pony Club WA merchandise has been overwhelming. I love being out and about and random places and seeing a Pony Club WA polo or hoodie. A great way to connect with pony club people that you haven’t met before! I have been waiting for the release of the new National Logo to design and release a new range of merchandise – stay tuned! As well as regular articles in Equestrian Publications, our greatest promotional event this year was the PCA National Junior Mounted Games Championships, hosted by PCAWA and held at the Perth Royal Show. A large and enthusiastic audience got the opportunity to see the Nation’s best junior games riders in action. It was a fantastic experience for all involved. Future Goals I am excited to be a part of Pony Club again in 2015, both as a mother to Club Members and as a part of the team at the Office. There is a great vibe present at the moment and listening to the ideas and initiatives raised by the knowledgeable and enthusiastic Connection Panel I can’t wait to see the brainstorming sessions develop into an achievable action list. PCAWA is a volunteer driven organisation and to continue to meet the needs of its members, we need the members to step up and become involved both at Club, Zone and State level. Trudi Hall

5. State Coaching Panel Report

2014 has been a very productive year for the State Coaching Panel. Our small panel of 7 out of a possible 12 are constantly working extremely hard finding ways to assist and encourage our PCAWA coaches and improve the way we do things. We have started re-vamping the Coaching and Rider Education page on the PCAWA website so that all relevant information on the Syllabus, Efficiency Certificates and NCAS Accreditation is logically grouped and easy to find. Further changes are being made to the Coaching Pages on the website and after many years saying we would add Coaching Notes we have finally created the tab and have started by adding the State Coaching School Notes. On that note about Website, Gear checking now has its own direct page. Jacinta Withoud has been working on the Gear Checking page and with the Gear Checking Advisory Panel (GCAP) and have produced great information e-blasts, now also available on the page, along with the 2015 Gear Checking Rules and guidelines for Safety and Comfort of the Horse and Rider. This year Healthways funded “Coaching the Coaches” Coaching Schools have been offered to Zones rather than individual clubs in an effort to spread the money further within our great State. The allocation of $300 per zone aims to encourage every zone to provide their clubs with some much needed instruction whether it is NCAS Accreditation, Gear Checking or a Flatwork or Jumping Schools etc. The schools provide all coaches with the

opportunity to update their skills on a regular basis as a refresher or to keep abreast of the latest changes to PCA Syllabus and new ways to present the same topics! Gear Checking has been a big focus of the year with changes made to how the SCP and office receive Gear checking enquiries to ensure correct information is being relayed and ensuring that clubs/zones take back some of the responsibility for keeping their members informed. The aim is to encourage everyone to take more responsibility for knowing the gear requirements, and where they can source many answers themselves. We have been promoting the updated Introduction to Gear Checking Schools which encourage more parent/member participation and greater awareness of the Gear Checking Manual. In 2015 we will also be rolling out the new format for Accrediting Gear Checkers, which we hope will encourage more to take up the challenge so we have a more consistent approach to gear checking at competitions and rallies. The Gear Checking Manual 2015 will see 12 months hard work by GCAP to produce the Updated Gear Checking Manual, with some changes to layout and formatting! Thanks to the efforts of Denise Legge our Coaching Newsletters have been very successful this year with lots of helpful information being communicated to Coaches State wide. State C* and K Coaching Coordinators conducted a very informative C*/K coaching school in August, whilst our State NCAS Coordinators have been hard at work assisting and assessing Coaches to gain the Prelim and Level 1 Coaching accreditation. 2015 will see further focus on providing more opportunities for Coaches to become accredited including being able to RPL their previous experiences and skills. Congratulations to the following who have achieved their C Examiners requirements: Natalie Williamson and Emma Allen and specialist K examiner Don Hawkins along with many other coaches who have renewed their NCAS accreditation. We are conducting a specific Examiners Seminar this year in conjunction with the State Coaching School to update current Examiners and provide prospective examiners with the information required on how they can proceed with being assessed to become a recognised PCAWA C Examiner. EVENTING

Organisation & People The 2014 Eventing Committee comprised of 6 members, one of whom unfortunately had to resign from their position in August due to family commitments. Resources Our major resources for 2014 were the army of dedicated pony club volunteers. These highly valued groups who work at club level organize and run events ensuring that the weekend of dressage, cross country and show jumping runs seamlessly. The availability of a further band of stewards, dressage and show jumping judges, course builders and sponsors, amongst others, throughout the year is admirable, everybody have something to contribute to the betterment of the sport. Graham Scott has again been our hard working Steward Coordinator ensuring that the events across the state are run on courses that are challenging, safe and well presented. The PCAWA office has been a pillar of support throughout the year providing resources and advice and assisting in the administration of the State Eventing Championships. The PCAWA Eventing Rules have been updated for the upcoming 2015 eventing season. The Eventing page on the PCAWA website provides an easy reference point for rules, regulations and downloads and a dedicated email address to the discipline has enables members to maintain in contact with the -Committee and the Office in regard to any issues arising from within the sport. Opportunity To Participate In 2014 approximately 30 ODE’s were held across the state at club and zone level enabling members to participate from PC45 classes through to PC1* classes.

PCAWA  Annual  General  Meeting  –  06.02.15

Competition In addition to the many club level events the pinnacle of the eventing year was again the State Eventing Championships held at Dryandra Regional Equestrian Centre and co-hosted for the 2nd year by Narrogin Pony and Riding Club. The State Eventing Championships are for Grade PC 80 and above and horse/rider combinations need to qualify to be able to enter this competition. Due to low numbers the Eventing Committee trialled the inclusion of a Non Championship PC80 class. This was met with enthusiasm from members not quite qualified for the Championship classes. The lower than usual numbers was met by a higher than usual standard of riding, team spirit, and general willingness on from all to bog in and help out. The addition of the inaugural Saturday Night Games added to the feel good atmosphere of this event and it was heart-warming to see members of all ages from a variety of clubs laughing and generally having fun together. In 2014 the State Eventing Championships were again run as a team competition only and no individual prizes were awarded, although this is under review for 2015. We also need to thank our sponsors Healthway, Department of Sport and Recreation, Petwan Pty Ltd, DCH Legal Group, Peard Real Estate, Express Airconditioning, Equiwear, Wanneroo H&PC and Redfoto. Progression The Eventing Committee is actively involved in conducting seminars to facilitate training and development of PCAWA Eventing Stewards, without stewards these events will not be able to be run. In 2014 we were please to award Sharon Shanks and Laurie Morley their accreditation as a PCAWA Eventing Steward. With the continued popularity and increase in events run by clubs throughout the year, the ability to supply Stewards for all the events continues to be a huge problem. Recent promotion of our Trainee Stewards promotion has seen a flurry of interest so we are hoping to have some new Trainees on board in 2015. We will also continue to update and change rules as necessary to help ensure a safe environment for our riders as well as promoting positive behaviours that are in line with PCAWA Codes of Conducts and policies. My thanks to the committee Graham Scott, Philippa Collier, Wanda Longley, Noel Mustchin and Mick Edmunds Coad who have been a hardworking, committed and supportive group of volunteers who are committed to developing Eventing in Pony Club. Thank you also to all event organisers who provide members with an opportunity to participate in this wonderful discipline plus our dedicated, hardworking and knowledgeable Eventing Stewards. Trudi Hall, Eventing Chair

SHOW JUMPING

Organisation & People The Show Jumping subcommittee has five representatives from three Zones, even though we are one of the smaller subcommittees we are a very hard working, functional subcommittee who dedicate themselves to developing riders in the discipline of show jumping and support events across the state. Resources The major resources of this group are our volunteers, coaches, judges and course builders without whom we would be unable to support the riders who strive to achieve excellence in show jumping. The Show Jumping subcommittee also maintains the PCAWA show jumping equipment and trailers, these are available for hire but must be returned in good order and loaded back onto the trailers in an orderly manner. The Show Jumping Subcommittee also updates the documentation for clubs and riders including:

• Show Jumping Manual, • Show Jumping Competency Forms, and • Judge Course Designers and Commentators •

Opportunity To Participate The subcommittee organises the Show Jumping Championships, this event is one of the largest in participation each year and allows riders from across the state to participate in Zone and Club teams as well as an individual. As the nationals were held in this state this year the Show Jumping Committee organised and ran the Show Jumping section of this event. We had riders from 6 state competing. Competition In 2014, our championships where held at the State Equestrian Centre and were very successful, with over 100 riders attending over 2 days. The competition was held in 4 rings including the indoor arena. Again this year the Equitation Show Jumping for the Bridget Woss bursary was very popular and riders seem to enjoy this event. The night time entertainment of the Jigsaw Pairs once again was very popular with both rider and crowd. The club team’s event is also a big crowd pleaser with all the riders from each club supporting their riders. In 2015 we will be looking it make the teams on the events Saturday a little easier for the by clubs being able to draw riders not only from their club but from their zones too. We hope this will allow clubs to find riders and horses for the correct heights and ages easier. Overall the weekend was a great success and we looking forward to many more years of show jumping championships. Progression The subcommittee will continue to support trainee judges and course designers, the support of these volunteers provide for our future in show jumping. At Easter we again held our PCAWA show jumping event before the championships to help clubs with the zone run off, the money raised from this was used in providing training for course builders and judges in the seminars that were held. There where a number of Course Builders and Judging Seminars held in different zones to help increase the numbers of officials within PCAWA. These where a great success and we thank everyone who was involved from the clubs who held them to all the people who attended but especially Mr Fred Freeman who ran them and to Thea Garner who helped out. In 2014 we started the first Tim Weigal Jumping Leader Board. Which has been a success and we hope it will grow with each year. The committee has been very happy with the way the naming of the leader board has been received by clubs and riders and everyone seems to think it is a great way of showing our appreciation to Tim who gave so much not only to show jumping but to PCAWA in a whole. This year we really hope that we can have some younger people come on the committee as we are not getting any younger and would greatly like to start training up others to do the jobs. Thank you to the office for your support over the year. I would very much like to thank the committee for their hard work and time spent on the show jumping committee. Debra Walker, Show Jumping Chair

TETRATHLON

Organisation & People Tetrathlon experience provides pony club members with a fantastic opportunity to combine their love of equestrian pursuits with other sports. It is a challenging competition requiring sound practical horsemanship, general athletic ability and sportsmanship. This competition is ideally suited to the all-rounder. The Tetrathlon helps to maintain interest in Pony Club and thereby retain membership. It also encourages members to be more physically active, resulting in improved fitness and better riders.

Tetrathlon, as the name suggests, involves four disciplines: cross country riding, cross country running, swimming and shooting, usually over two days of competition. The organisation of the phases varies depending on the country hosting the event and the type of competition. E.g. International, Regional, National.

Points are awarded for performance in each of the events and the winner is the one who amasses the greatest number of points after the four disciplines.

ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING

PCAWA  Annual  General  Meeting  –  06.02.15

The sub-committee responsible for Tetrathlon in Western Australia has seven members. Committee members represent usually come from the hosting club and a range of clubs throughout the state that have members participating in the Tetrathlon. The Championship is run each year in March or April and the hosting club is committed to run the event for three years in a row. Log fence Pony Club hosted the event for its first time in 2013 and it will be its third year on the 14th and 15th of March 2105. The committee also supported Narrogin Pony Club which hosted a Tetrathlon at the Dryandra Regional Equestrian Park.

Resources The sub-committees’ main resources are PCAWA stewards, judges, coaches and volunteers, without whom our event could not run. The Tetrathlon is also dependent on local governments, swimming and shooting clubs to provide suitable venues and equipment for the shooting and swimming phases. The future of Tetrathlon is also linked to the number and quality of cross country courses in Western Australia.

Funding from entry’s and sponsorship helps the hosting clubs to improve and build cross country equipment for future generations to train, compete on and enjoy.

The rule book is a major resource that provides the answer for all questions related to events. It includes the rules for each phase and method of scoring; this book is maintained and updated each year. Our page on the PCAWA website includes:

• Duties of a Team Manager,

• Score sheets for all phases

• PCAWA Shooting Targets,

• Shooting notes and hints,

• Tetrathlon Rules and. • Event updates.

The running of the State Tetrathlon for a three year period at each hosting club allows for the development of “A” grade courses across the state, with funding being secured to assist with the development at each new club. The Tetrathlon is a country championship event and should be held in a regional area.

Opportunity To Participate

In the State Championship event every club member over 10 years of age can participate. If a full team is not available from the club then composite teams will be formed, this allows for increased participation. The 2014 Championship Tetrathlon received lower entries that it has had for a few years with a total of 108 competitors. Any member over the age of 8 years can participate in a club run Tetrathlon. Narrogin hosted the Dryandra Tetrathlon in February and there were fewer competitors took part this year than in the past. Pair classes were very popular and many individuals participated in their first pony club event. 2014 was a big year for PCAWA as they hosted an International Tetrathlon exchange. Competitors came from 4 countries being England, Ireland, United States of America, and New Zealand to compete together with Australia here in Western Australia. This event was held from the 5th to the 20th of July 2014. It gave all of the competitors, team coaches and chaperones a tour of team building, sightseeing and great competition here in Western Australia. In total there were 29 young Ladies and 18 Young Men competing in the International Tetrathlon exchange from all of these participating country’s. The Tetrathlon competition appeals to a different membership base in particular the all-rounder athlete, as it involves horse riding with other sporting events. It provides an opportunity to PCAWA to increase membership by providing opportunities to a wider membership base.

Tetrathlon not only involves groups who traditionally participate in horse events. It includes shooting clubs and swimming clubs therefore broadens the exposure and knowledge of Pony Club in the wider community.

Tetrathlon also exists in a pair format allowing each member of a pair to complete in only two phases of the event. For example a father and daughter can compete in a pair class together or two friends can enter in a pair class. This allows non riders to participate in Pony Club events and also increases the profile of Pony Club in the general community.

Competition

The 2014 Championship Tetrathlon received 108 nominations, the Championship was held at Yarloop which was the second year of the three year cycle. The event was really well run and participants came from all over the state to take part. As the event is a two day event with running, swimming and shooting taking place on Saturday and the cross country phase taking place on Sunday, this event requires camping for many of the members. The Tetrathlon sub-committee have over the years developed a karaoke competition that takes place on the Saturday night; the participation in this competition is as keen as all other competition for the weekend. Parents and other volunteers take part and many hours of planning and practice take place.

Progression

The Tetrathlon sub-committee’s main aims are to increase the number of Tetrathlon competitions held throughout the year, to establish a permanent place for Western Australian riders in the International Tetrathlon Exchange program and to host a Tetrathlon at the PCA National Championships in 2015. Clinics are being organised to provide candidates with Riding, Shooting, running and swimming training. As Tetrathlon has been recognised as a National PCA discipline we all need to work together on the improvement and progression of this discipline to get International and National rules set in place for future generations. Log fence Pony Club will be hosting the State Championship event in 2015. In 2015 we are planning for a further increase in competitors at the State Championship Event. Reflecting back over the past years, we as the committee have seen the Tetrathlon loose participation. As the committee always tries to understand what the community likes and dislikes we are working on a dedicated PCAWA Tetrathlon Facebook page. This we hope will give us better speed of communication and information to improve participation. To try to achieve more participation and enjoyment we have opened a Senior D grade class as well as reopened an open class for the parents and ex members that have out grown pony club. The committee is pleased to see the major improvements Log Fence Pony club have undertaken to their cross country course. This course provides excellent opportunities for improvement in the standard of cross country riding within Western Australia. Narrogin Pony Club is hosting a Tetrathlon competition in February 2015, which will provide an excellent opportunity for competitors preparing for State Championships in March 2015. Grant Gaasdalen, Tetrathlon Chair

DEVELOPMENT

2014 was a bit of a quiet year for the Development Squad. We had our annual camp in March with riders from the various disciplines in attendance. The camp also played host to the Showjumping Design Course Builders course presented by Fred Freeman and the Active Riding Junior and Senior Squad. The day started off with the Dressage riders learning the use of practical lunging to warm up their horses and having a flat work lesson with a ridden test and feedback. Fred Freeman took the riders through a presentation of Eye perception in horses. Dr Warwick Vale visited the camp and spoke on “The Equine Athlete”. Dr. Theresa Marshall gave the riders and their parents an insight into handling nerves, setting goals and how to handle the ups and downs of self- expectations for both horse and rider. Emma Lawrie, one of the members from the Riders Advisory Panel came and spoke on what the group does and how to get involved with the Panel. Bob Wilkie, Active Riding Coach, presented flexibility and movement for horse and riders. This session aimed at the importance of warm up and warm down for horse and the importance of making the horse think with new

movements and exercises. This also made the riders realize the importance of using body weight, one handed control and their legs. The Showjumpers/Eventers went through their paces with Nell Henry with grid work and participated in the SJ Course Design Seminar presented by Fred Freeman and riding over the course that they built. And of course, no camp would be complete with the games on Saturday night with Dan Foster. As always the camps would not run smoothly without the riders and their parents pitching in with breakfast, lunch and dinner – so a BIG thank you. Also to our coaches who make themselves available to help the riders at the beginning of the season as they enter the new Pony Club Year. Also a special thank you to Jacqui Moon, PCAWA Event Coordinator – who pulls it all together. The 2015 year will be an exciting one for many riders as they prepare themselves to be considered for Nationals in South Australia. Wanda Longley

WEST COASTAL ZONE

In 2014 Pony Clubs within the West Coastal Zone, continued to provide opportunities for members to develop their skills and knowledge across an array of equestrian disciplines. Registration numbers have remained strong across all clubs, with good attendances at club rallies and events. All Clubs report an encouraging representation of riders at State Championships… in particular the State Dressage results, which saw our members placed 1st and 2nd. Zone run-offs conducted throughout the year have encouraged all riders to “have a go” at competing at this level and the chance to represent their Club. Positive results in those members who undertook their Certificate training within the Zone has ensured a focus on sound horsemanship in addition to developing riding skills. Enthusiasm from committed volunteers within our clubs has ensured that riders of all ages had the opportunity to attend the many clinics and events within the Zone …with a commitment to continue these in 2015 to enable members to build on their achievements. Our thanks go to Log Fence Pong Club for again successfully hosting for the 2nd year, the State Tetrathlon in 2014. They will again host this event in 2015. At the Zone AGM in November 2014 Log Fence Pony Club was elected to provide new Zone delegates for 2015/2016. Thanks must go to the members of the Murray Horse and Pony Club who have managed this position for the last two years with an enthusiastic and collaborative approach. All Clubs recognize the importance of sustaining their sport for future generations and are including in their reports evidence of budget allocations to fund maintenance to club grounds, facilities and equipment. The commencement in November of the redevelopment of the Coolup Equestrian Facility has been a welcomed venture that will support a varied array of equine disciplines. It is envisaged that Murray and Pinjarra ,Horse and Pony Clubs will be supported by its Zone counterparts whilst this re-development takes place. 2015 is expected to be an exciting and full year of opportunities for those wishing to both participate and compete within the safe and instructive Pony Clubs in the West Coastal Zone. SWAN ZONE

The zone has been very successful this year, we commenced the year with all three clubs operating at high levels of rally participation and instruction. Many certificates were achieved by our riders and the instructors are to be congratulated. We conducted the usual “runoffs” for zone team selection for Championship events and ran the Marsden Cup. In the state championships the riders from all clubs participated with many individual and team awards achieved. Parents and volunteers from the zone served on each of the state sub-committees and chaired three of these. Financially we are solvent, able to support our rider’s entry fees to championships, please refer to financial report for details of our status. The Zone attempted to run a gear checking school and a tetrathalon training camp both were cancelled due to lack of participants and the cost of instructors, however a very successful shooting training day was conducted by Grant and Wanneroo ran a lunging school that was also successful. Late in the year we were notified that Herdsman Pony Club had achieved full affiliation and were to be members of our Zone, I welcome them on behalf of the Zone and look forward to sharing ideas and them joining in our Zone events and teams. I wish the Zone the best for the future and will be available for assistance if request , however this year (2015) I will not be accepting any official positions on any committees for Zone or State. Finally I would like to thank the Club and the Zone representatives from our clubs; although we don’t meet often we do communicate frequently and assist each other wherever we can. Thank you again and good luck again. Michele Wilkie

NORTHERN ZONE

Well here we are at the end of another Pony Club season. 2014 has been a very successful year for all our Northern Zone clubs. Numbers at all clubs have been strong with many new riders, ponies and horses. All events were well attended and enjoyed by all. The addition of PC and Open 105 classes at the Moonyoonooka and the Zone ODEs made for exciting times on these days; it is great to be able to offer this class. Thank you to Graham Scott and Moonyoonooka Horse and Pony Club for a wonderful course. The Zone Schools have also been well attended with most participants gaining great results from their lessons from the wonderful instructors that visit us. Members of the Northern Zone would like to thank Katrin Keunstler, Nellandra Henry, Deborah Spencer, Dan Foster, Stephen Johnson and Sharon Jarvis for giving us the opportunity to gain knowledge from their teaching. Sorry if I have forgotten anyone. This year we had a group of riders from within our zone take the trip to compete at Moora Horse Trials for their first time which was enjoyed by all, with great results. We also had the Zone represented by Richelle Giltrap at the State Eventing Championships and the Showjumping Championships where she competed successfully. This gives our younger riders something to aspire to. Well done Richelle. Throughout the year we have had many comments regarding the quality of our members both on their riding skills and their etiquette when out and about, which is great to hear. This year also saw two of our long serving members be rewarded with a new annual award each named after them. They received a pin in their honour which was designed and handcrafted by a local jeweller Leon Baker Jewellers. The Marie Hart Volunteer Award has been dedicated in honour of Marie Hart. Marie has been involved in the Northern Zone for many many years and always goes above and beyond her duties to make things happen within the

Zone. A lot of this is done in her own time. This Award will be an annual award within the Northern Zone and will be awarded to the person who stands out as the most helpful volunteer during the pony club season. The Graham Scott Dedication Award has been developed in honour of Graham Scott. Graham, who has never ridden, has also been involved with the Northern Zone for many years. Graham has spent numerous hours out on our cross country courses with our clubs, helping us to make them more interesting and exciting for competitors. This award will be presented to a person who shows dedication within the Northern Zone. The Northern Zone members are very lucky to have two such outstanding people who go out their way to help others and to continue to make Pony Club a large part of our communities within the Northern Zone. Lyn Whitwell

HILLS ZONE

The Hills Zone has had another busy and successful year, it has about 130 members distributed between six clubs. We have had good representation from our clubs at our zone meetings and have five active sub committees. Two successful clinics were held early in the year:

• A show jumping clinic with Nell Henry, a level 2 coach. • A cross country clinic with Deb Spenser, Philippa Collier and Dave Carey.

In November we ran the Hazel Pither, an inter-club novice show jumping competition for zone clubs at Walliston and had ten teams competing and ran our zone games completion in conjunction with Swan zone Sue Britza, our chief coach has been working very hard for the zone, she has organised two C* schools with Philippa Collier and David Britza, and we hope to have five C* candidates taking their C* in mid February. The zone has had teams of riders successfully representing our zone at the following state championships:

• Show jumping • Dressage • Prince Phillip Cup and Novelties

Also teams have successfully competed in State competitions on behalf of their clubs with wins in the Tetrathlon and the State Eventing Championships as well as the above competitions. We are looking forward to another busy year with our new zone uniforms in navy blue, yellow and red.

GREAT SOUTHERN ZONE

The GSZ was delighted to secure another year's funding for the Organisational Sustainability Program from Department of Sport & Recreation. This funding has enabled the Zone to: • Provide coaching assistance to clubs (external not volunteer coaches - this both supports and helps educate our

volunteer coaches) • Support the running of zone competitions such as the zone ode (jointly hosted by albany and king river pony

clubs) and the show jumping and games day (hosted by mt manypeaks) as well as a dressage day at west plantagenet.

• Organise run-offs for teams for state show jumping and dressage competitions. At the former west plantagenet members natasha verazzi and victoria squire really shone, whilst in the dressage riders from king river were very consistent as usual; in particular sienna bergesen and bronte van helden in the pony pas de deux and bethany rainbow from albany pony club winning the ott prize on a horse she had produced from scratch.

• Run a couple of coaching the coaches sessions. The first we were lucky enough to have jacinta withoud to do a gear check update and the second fran atkinson took coaches and riders through the minefield of sj course design.

• Review the zone's constitution. Definitely outdated and we are now compliant with the department of commerce and the request made by our association (to all clubs/zones) to update constitutions. This review has made us more aware of the requirement of the act ( relating to incorporated associations) and it was disappointing to find out that denmark pony club, after 2 years in recess, was then wound up, contrary to the this act, by one or two ex-club members and several thousand dollars worth of pony club assets "re-assigned" to a denmark adult riding club as opposed to staying within pony clubs in the zone.

In addition to the usual rally activities, competitions and certificates we have had a number of "firsts" with: • A Veterans Day - very popular with entrants travelling over 200kms to enter as there are few of these types of

shows outside of Perth • An ODE Training Day - all of the fun but none of the pressure and few of the costs • Teaming with the Southern Districts Dressage Club for their Summer Solstice weekend of dressage tests. • A joint Albany/ King River Pony Club Rally which commemorated the centenary of the start of WW1 with a

series of Military Games • And of course Isobelle Barbour and Victoria Squire, members from West Plantagenet, successfully competing

in TET Championships. Congratulations to Kojonup Pony Club for running a very popular and successful ODE and to Katanning for maintaining a vibrant club with very limited numbers. Finally well done to Amy Kennedy (APC) as a well deserved PCAWA Citizenship Award recipient. Thanks to all those who have volunteered in what ever way. Pony Club would not be Pony Club without the varied and numerous sacrifices that people make. Best wishes to all PCAWA members for a happy and rewarding year. Denise Legge
