Dear Supporters of Pony Bird,The 2018-2019 year has been a strong one for Pony Bird. Our well-rounded and diverse board of directors enhanced our decision making throughout the year. We worked diligently on our three-year strategic plan effective immediately. Rapid changes in medical and mental health environments and staffing shortages were a chal-lenge. Our strategic plan has addressed these issues and will be the guide for us to work towards resolution. In addition our President

& CEO, Sara Sucharski, actively participates and is now serving on the board of directors of MARF, and ANCOR, the federal agency for developmental disabilities. We will remain abreast of local and federal trends for the care of Pony Bird’s individuals. Sara and board members are also actively working with our state legislature to advocate on be-half of Pony bird individuals and staff. Staffing has been difficult in this economy and remains our number one priority. We have limited the number of residents to maintain the staff to individual ratios and continue delivering the excellent quality of care for which we are recognized. We are grateful for our community’s support throughout 2018-2019. On behalf of those we serve, thank you for your generous investment in the Pony Bird family. Together we are Pony Bird strong! My best, Ann Ferguson-Stephens Chairperson of the Board of Directors

Organizational History

In 1977, Pony Bird was born. Named after a children’s book about a young boy and his magical flying pony, Pony Bird began as one home devoted to caring for ten children with significant intellectual and physical disabilities.

The Missouri Department of Mental Health quickly recognized Pony Bird’s outstanding achievements in the care of non-ambulatory individuals with severe to profound intellectual and physical disabilities. As a result, they encouraged several expansions.

Today, Pony Bird is licensed to provide 24-hour care for up to 60 non-ambulatory individuals who are physically and mentally disabled. The individuals supported are unable to meet their daily living needs without total assistance. Pony Bird operates six residential homes in Mapaville and DeSoto, Missouri.

SUPPORT SERVICESFor more than 40 years, Pony Bird has been a leader in providing a homelike setting for non-ambulatory children and adults with significant intellectual and physical disabilities. Twenty-four hour personal care is provided by trained staff including speech/physical/occupational therapy, dietary management, health care management and transportation for essential medical care. Day services are provided Monday through Friday. Each day participants take part in therapeutic activities that are geared toward achieving individualized goals. These goals include increasing independence, physical capabilities, communication skills and decision making. Overnight and day respite care is also available to families in the community who have a family member with these needs. Pony Bird’s family of special ones enjoy ongoing educational learning, activities, community outings and therapy services to create their highest possible quality of life.

Pony Bird is the only private non-for-profit organization in the Metropolitan Area specializing in supports for medically fragile individu-als of all ages and has been recognized by the State of Missouri Department of Mental Health for our outstanding level of care. Every individual is treated with dignity, love and respect. For many, Pony Bird is the only place that can provide the intense level of day-time and overnight respite to families with a non-ambulatory child or adult requiring specialized care. Day-time respite can be scheduled for just a few hours. Overnight respite is also available, not to exceed two weeks during any one visit. During either respite stay, personal care is provided (24/7), including medical care, dietary management and participation in daily pro-grams and activities.

Pony Bird provides a warm empowering support system where abilities are celebrated. Individuals are given a chance to explore their own unique skillsets, while actively engaging in the community.

Individuals who call Pony Bird home are active members of their community. Volunteering allows them to maximize their abilities as active participants in activities such as Special Olympics, canine therapy programs, Meals on Wheels, disability awareness week at local schools or donating artwork to other charities. It gives the individuals an outlet to feel connected and fulfilled. These community integration activities give the residents the chance to become full partici-pants in their community.

Pony Bird’s new Individualized Supported Living (ISL) program is going strong. Three young men are supported in their independence through a partnership with Rainbow Village. Pony Bird staff provide 24-hour care including nursing support so that they are living their best lives possible. Through this new program, the brothers participate in community and volunteer activities, are learning life skills, and are supported in their independence.
