OMAN• Oman is a gulf country that is growing in prominence. • Not formally part of the British Empire but has strong British

influences• Hindu is the native language but English is widely spoken,

particularly in the hospitals and is taught at school from an early age.

• Oman offers a rich Arabic culture • 75% of Omanis are Muslims; a real awareness and sensitivity to the

Muslim culture is necessary but there is a long established ex-patriot community where western culture is evident.

• HCARE (Nursing) has a strong collaboration with the Ministry of Health and the Oman Specialised Nursing Institute (OSNI)

• HCARE collaboratively delivers a BSc (Hons) in Nursing Studies & BSc (Hons) in Community Health Nursing Practice

Hospital Profiles: - Muscat Oman 1. Khoula Hospital

 • 463-bed tertiary hospital • Oman’s National Centre for-

– Trauma Neurosurgery, – Orthopaedics, – Plastic and Reconstructive – Surgery, – and is the Nation’s providers – of Orthotic and Prosthetic services also

• maternity, gynaecology and physiotherapy departments.

2. The Royal Hospital

• A large, tertiary-level, acute-care hospital, which provides state-of-the-art services in the specialties and sub-specialties of medicine, surgery, paediatrics, obstetrics & gynaecology,

• The National Oncology Centre has been built as an extension block and a new 139-bed Cardiac Centre is being built adjacent to the Oncology Centre. A state-of-the-art facility for paediatric and adult Cardiology and Cardiothoracic Surgery with an extensive outpatient department.

3. Sultan Qaboos University Hospital (SQUH)

The 500-bed SQUH is one of the Sultanate of Oman's leading hospitals providing acute care and specialties and sub-specialties of medicine, surgery, paediatrics, obstetrics & gynaecology, oncology

4. Al Massara Hospital –mental health(formerly Known as Ibn Sina)

• Only opened in 2012 • Approximately 20 mins drive from Muscat • OSNI provide transport • A 204 bedded national MH referral training & Research Centre • A large Day Care Department focusing on rehabilitation includes;

Occupational therapy, Physiotherapy, Speech therapy and Vocational training units.

• General Psychiatric Outpatient Department, Psychology Department, Psychiatric casualty that functions round the clock, Radiology and Electroencephalogram (E.E.G.) Department,

• Many gardens and activity facilities

Food and Hospitality

• A very important part of Omani culture is hospitality.

• If invited into an Omani house, a visitor is likely to be greeted with a bowl of dates, qahwa (coffee with cardamom and fruit.

• The coffee is served fairly weak in a small cup, which should be shaken after three servings to show that you have finished.

• Halwa and other sweets are often given at celebrations such as Eids.

Omani People

• Traditional clothing is worn by most Omani men. • Ankle-length, collarless robe called a dishdasha

that buttons at the neck with a tassel hanging down.

• Traditionally the tassel is dipped in perfume.

• Women wear hijab and abaya.

• Some women cover their faces and hands, but most do not.

• On holidays, such as Eid, women often wear brightly coloured outfits consisting of a mid-calf length tunic over pants.

Oman is famous for its khanjar knives, which are curved daggers worn during holidays as part of

ceremonial dress
