…then the LITTLE HOOP LOOP is just for you!The Little Hoops Loop is an annual fun run for children. It will take place at 6pm on Friday 14th June at Darley Abbey Park.

Last year, over 100 children ran the course, which starts at Darley Abbey Cricket Club and laps the meadow twice. The fun run is part of an evening organised by Derwent Runners, who also stage an over 13s and adult relay race “The Hairy Helmet Relay Race” which is a 4 leg relay race, each runner covering just over 2miles.

The evening is a fantastic family event, and all entrants are invited to stay in the park, enjoy the evening, bring a picnic, enjoy some of the real ales that are available and have a great family evening.

Last year the organisers raised over £1200 for Rainbows hospice for children and this year they hope to raise even more for the Charity.

For details of how to enter a relay team or the children’s race please visit: www.hairyhelmetrelay.co.uk www.derwentrunners.co.uk

Are you aged under 13 and love a good run?

Polly’s List will be sponsoring the Little Hoops Loop and provide all the children who finish the

race with a free refreshment.

I was having a little chuckle to myself the other day when reading a report from Legal & General’s 2013 “Cost of a Parent” report.

They research how much the unpaid domestic work is worth if you were to pay someone to do those tasks. Can you believe that the value of a mum is a whopping £31,627 and the cost of dad is £23,971?

So why was I chuckling? Well, these figures are before we’ve even been to work. Which means that, actually, I’m doing pretty well when it comes to juggling everything that life demands of us mums!

Where do they get these figures from and how are they able to put a value on a parent? They look at a variety of activities; such as childcare, cooking, tidying up, washing, ironing, cleaning, driving to activities, food shopping and other general household tasks and then look at the time spent on these activities (I say activities loosely here…some are definitely chores!) and place a value on them based on what you would pay someone do to them for you.

What is interesting is that many parents really underestimate what they are worth. In fact, most surveyed thought their tasks were worth about half that of the figures reported.

So, if you’re a stay at home parent and need some ammunition - here it is! If you’re a working mum, here’s a little more to put in the pot.

Why do L&G do this? They are concerned that people just don’t realise what they’re worth - which is only ever really bought home if the worst happens and that person is not around any more. Most families are under-insured and this report is meant to help you understand what you might need in terms of protection insurance, like family life insurance.

It might be that the main wage earner in your house has life insurance to repay the mortgage or replace their income. This is easy to understand because you can see the money that they bring in each month.

These L&G figures help those that don’t work realise how much cover they might need & help those working parents realise that; actually, you might not have as much cover as you need if you’re just covering the essential bills.

Best Wishes

Fiona

Derby Theatre Tuesday 2 - Saturday 6 July

Here’s a real ‘peach’ of a show all your family will love! Roald Dahl’s very first children’s book and one of his most popular stories, James and the Giant Peach, is coming soon to Derby Theatre from Tuesday 2 until Saturday 6 July.

This classic book has been adapted for the stage and tells the story of James, a lonely young boy who lives with Aunt Sponge and Aunt Spiker, the most revolting Aunts in England. They make him work and slave and never let him play with other children. Then one day he meets a mystical old man who gives him a bag that contains the strongest magic the world has ever known. When James spills the bag near an old peach tree,

the most incredible things start to happen and James embarks on the adventure of a lifetime with the most amazing group of characters you could ever meet!

Birmingham Stage Company is best known for their acclaimed productions of Roald Dahl stories. In their twenty year history they have staged six Roald Dahl books and many other children’s stories including The Jungle Book and Horrible Histories. All have been loved and praised by audiences and critics alike:

“A heart-warming mix of fun, fruit and nuts” The Times

James and the Giant Peach is wonderful entertainment for kids aged 4+ and all the family. If you’re looking for fruit-filled fun and wizzpopping wonders, then don’t miss this great Dahl show!

Lots of family fun to be had at Calke AbbeyWith peeling paintwork and overgrown courtyards, Calke Abbey tells the story of the dramatic decline of a country house estate. The house and stables are little restored, with many abandoned areas vividly portraying a period in the 20th century when numerous country houses did not survive to tell their story.

Discover the tales of an eccentric family who amassed a vast collection of hidden treasures. Visit the beautiful, yet faded, walled gardens and explore the orangery, auricular theatre and the kitchen gardens. Escape into the ancient and fragile habitats of Calke Park and its National Nature Reserve.

There’s lots of family fun to be had at Calke. Explore the house and find the secret spaces of the brew house tunnels. Get your wellies on and have a muddy good time in our parkland and see our red and fallow deer. Don’t forget to pop in to Squirt’s Stables for family activities every weekend from March - October 11.30 - 3.30pm. Explore the Stable yards with our detective trail and afterwards go wild in our play area.

The team behind last Easter’s sell-out tour of The Wizard of Oz are returning to Derby LIVE’s Assembly Rooms this March with another family treat, a lavish professional pantomime version of Rapunzel - the girl with the magical, golden hair.

There will be 4 action-packed performances of Rapunzel at the Assembly Rooms on Saturday 30th and Easter Sunday 31st March. The cast will include Jenny Jones from ‘CITV’s Hi-5’ as Rapunzel, Jon Moses from ‘ITV’s Superstar’ as the Prince, Kay Purcell from ‘CBBC’s Tracy Beaker Returns and The Dumping Ground’ as Gothel the Enchantress, Blue Peter legend’s Peter Duncan as Muddles.

Join Rapunzel and her Prince in this wonderful production, packed with great songs, amazing dance routines and plenty of laughter for all the family!

If you’re looking for something to occupy the children during the Easter holidays then Michaela Strachan’s Really Wild Adventures will take families on a delightful journey through an alphabet jungle of animal rhymes. From Antelopes to Zebras, from Orphaned Orangutans to Polar bear dentistry, it will be a whistle stop interactive show full of poetry, puppetry, music and lots of fascinating wildlife facts. On at the Guildhall Theatre on Thursday 4th April, the show is inclusive, educational and lots of fun - perfect for those aged 3 and over.

Mid-way through the Easter school holidays is Babbling Vagabonds performance of The Brothers Grimm . Perfect for those aged 4 and upwards, the show is a spell binding tale told using storytelling, shadow play and pop ups and is on at the Guildhall Theatre on Sunday 7th April. Who’s afraid of the big bad wolf?

There’s plenty for the whole family to see and experience with

this Easter & Spring

Rounding off the last week of the Easter break is the ever-popular musical Joseph and His Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat . On at the Assembly Rooms from Tuesday 9th until Saturday 13th April, it retells the Biblical story of Joseph, his eleven brothers and the coat of many colours. This show is full of unforgettable songs including Those Canaan Days, Any Dream Will Do and Close Every Door To Me.

Tickets for all of the above shows, as well as a full programme of events are available at www.derbylive.co.uk or through the Derby LIVE Box Office on 01332 255800.

The vision… Derby College have of a creative, nurturing, busy Saturday School for children and young people is gradually coming to fruition.

Their LIPA 4:19 Academy for children and young people aged between 4 - 19 years is growing every term.It offers fun and engaging performing arts classes for children aged 7 years and older through three hour long workshops; one in each of the performing arts disciplines - singing, dancing and drama. The LIPA 4:19 tutors are all highly qualified and engaging individuals who have experienced performance at a professional level. Early Start Workshops for children aged 4-6 years are 90 minutes long and combine dance, drama and song in a fun, creative and engaging way. Each LIPA 4:19 term is 12 weeks long and the fee is £285 per term for 7-19 year olds and £150 per term for early start students. The groups are all working very well together; they support and encourage one another, respect each other’s viewpoints and contributions and welcome all new comers with open arms. The end of term show in December showcased the progression they had made in one short term and parents were thrilled to see what their young people had achieved since they began in September. The tutors are all really pleased with how it’s going and very proud of what they have achieved together. Plans are now afoot for their end of year show when older ones will be performing excerpts from ‘Little Shop of Horrors’ and younger ones will be singing and dancing along to numbers

from ‘The Jungle Book’. The older groups have visited a local production of ‘Little Shop of Horrors’ to get a feel of how it should look and feel including a back stage tour to see how a show works on a technical level.

Performing Arts isn’t everyone’s cup of tea, of course and Derby College are keen to offer opportunities to nurture the interests and talent of all young people, so they have developed Excite to address that need. Last year, Derby College delivered a few courses in visual art as part of their Excite Saturday School for children and young people aged between 7 - 16. All those who came along had the chance to experiment with printing techniques, collage, paint and fabrics. The children who joined our Christmas Excite Course made presents and cards for their family and friends.

At the moment, a games development course is running for 11-16 year olds. They are working with a tutor who works in the games industry to find out how games have developed since their invention, what makes a good game, how to design characters and environments and how they can create their own unique game. The atmosphere in the room is exciting and animated.

So, Excite is now ready to try something new; after Easter from 27th April - 18th May, they will be delivering five short courses. We will be introducing a media course - an exciting new course looking at the many aspects of the media. Find out what it’s like to be a

journalist, carry out interviews, write a story, create a headline and design advertisements to be published.

Music Technology is something else than many young people experiment with at home and Derby College has some excellent equipment and resources that young people could use to develop their ideas and create original tracks and songs. During the four week Excite Music technology Course, they will be introduced to Apple Mac computer software, music production equipment and ways of using live instruments alongside technology to create unique and original music tracks.

In addition to Music Technology and Media, Excite will be delivering four week courses in games development, both for beginners and as a progression for those on the present course and a visual art course. The theme for the Art Course will be ‘Time’. This year there are plans for a themed festival in Derby to celebrate the 300th Anniversary of the birth of John Whitehurst, clockmaker, geologist, scientist and general polymath, and we would like participants in the course to produce art work that might contribute to the festival.

If you are interested in Excite or LIPA 4:19, please email [email protected] or call LIPA 4:19 Principal and Excite co-ordinator, Maria Banks on 07966 099949

AT DERBY COLLEGE

Derby College has teamed up with the Liverpool Institute for Performing Arts (LIPA), co-founded by Sir Paul McCartney, to open the academy, which is aimed at young people aged between 4 and 19 years.

For all age groups, classes are fun and stimulating and are carefully designed to reflect the correct stage of performing arts development. So, for the younger age groups, our unique classes stretch imaginations, build self-confidence and bring the magic of performing arts activities to life. While for older ages classes are designed to offer a more focused approach with an eye to progressing further within the performing arts.

Classes run on a Saturday, usually over three terms to coincide as much as possible with the school year.

gifts & shopping

After almost 4 and a half years trading from its home in a converted cottage on Mickleover’s Station Road, The Alphabet Gift Shop has undergone a complete refurbishment to refresh the look of the shop and to accommodate new stock and personalisation services. The project began with a need to replace the old drainage system that ran under the shop which involved digging up the floor. It ended up as a complete refurbishment of the entire premises!

“We needed to close the shop to do the drainage work and it seemed like the ideal opportunity to do some improvements. We have always wished that our counter area was a bit bigger, so that was our first job. We now have a lovely big counter which means we have more room to wrap for our customers.” Said Sue Dorling, shop owner.

The shop’s baby gift department has always been popular with customers so this has been expanded to become a Baby Boutique with its own room decorated in nursery colours. The range of gifts is being expanded to include new suppliers and new ranges which will include gifts for new mums, baby clothes, changing bags and nursery accessories.

Jewellery is another area of the shop that has undergone a redesign with bags and scarves included in this section. Beautiful gift ideas for your home can now be found in its own room at the side of the shop.

Lots of new stock arrived earlier this month in time for the opening and we have a number of new suppliers and designers in response to customer requests - Gisela Graham, Emma Bridgewater, Parlane, Ruby & Ginger to name just a few.

“We’re really pleased with the final look - it feels like a new shop again!” said Sue “ The outside has been completely re-painted (it’s

still pink!) and we have new shop signs to match the ones at our Interiors shop with an updated logo style. I love the inside too - it’s a little more sophisticated but still has a really friendly feel”

Jack Rabbits - Just some of our most frequently asked questions…

I’ve heard you now open on Sundays?

Indeed we are! We’ve listened to the pleas from our loyal customers, and now

open our doors from 10.00am - 2.00pm, offering our extensive breakfast menu,

which includes our legendary Full English offering, perfect for lazy grazing on a

Sunday, with no urgency to spring from your beds!

You recently provided the food for my neighbours birthday party, is this a regular service you provide?Yes, we have various menus available to suit all budgets and provide a wide service in outside catering, from cold fork buffets to hot suppers, along with a delightful range of canapés and sharing platters.

My sister is Gluten intolerant, if we

were to come and dine with you, would

there be choices within your menu to

accommodate this?We recognise that there are many dietary needs amongst our customers, which

can often make it difficult to find somewhere to dine out, and with this in mind not

only have a number of dishes within our menu that would be suitable, including

gluten free crackers to accompany our platters, and a range of cakes. We have

a number of vegetarian offerings, and dishes suitable for those who are lactose

intolerant.

It’s my husbands birthday next month, and we’re looking for somewhere to meet up with family for lunch, is it possible to book a table? We are deliberate in not taking bookings for our tables, ensuring that our customers can always drop by with the confidence that any wait for a table will only be for a short time. Even during our busiest periods, we encourage you to peruse the menu and place your order, to enable our kitchen team to start preparing your meal, and we guarantee you’ll be seated ahead of your food being served. It might seem like an unorthodox approach, but it works!

I’ve heard that you provide 10 meals to take away and pop in my freezer for just £45. Can you tell me more about this? Our smaller store next door but one to our Dining Hall offers a range of meals daily, all cooked and ready to take away and reheat at your convenience. The extensive menu is deliberate in offering dishes that are time consuming, laborious in their preparation and that re –heat without marring the flavour of the dish, all cooked in the shop on our beautiful Aga. Our Freezer Meal deal provides you with 5 varieties of dishes, 2 of each, designed for you to pop in your freezer and keep on standby for those evenings when time is prohibitive, or for when cooking is simply not on the agenda.

I was recently lucky enough to win a

beautiful hamper donated by yourselves

to our school fundraising event, and

wanted to give one to my father in law

for his birthday, are they available in

Our enviable hampers are available from our Food Hall, located within our larger

store. You can determine exactly what items are included, giving you control

over both the cost and ensuring that they will be agreeable with the recipients

tastes, and they can include a selection of cheeses from our deli, Fresh Artisan

Breads, Ales and Wines, chutneys and pickles, Oils and Vinegars, Chocolates and

Biscuits, Jams and Preserves, Table Condiments, our Jack Rabbits Cookbook,

and cooked meats and antipasti...the list is endless. The hampers themselves are

built within recycled wooden wine boxes, and we encourage them to be planted

up after to transform them into a herb garden, using packs of seeds we include

in the hamper.

My children, aged 5 and 7 really enjoy all the foods I eat, but their appetites are much smaller...do you have a childrens menu that doesn’t just offer nuggets and beans? We recognise that many children enjoy the same food as their parents, and want a similar offering, and with this in mind we have a menu prepared for our younger audience which is based around our main menu, and we also have handmade artisan pizzas available daily. 50 Queen Street, Derby

I’m regularly asked to organise food

for business lunches at the office where

I work, and am struggling to find

somewhere that offers good quality

freshly made cold platters, is this

something you are able to provide?

We have a number of choices available to support business lunches, from

simple filled ciabatta cobs served alongside handmade pastries and cakes

through to buffet style offerings of carved meats, delicious tarts, various salads,

cheeseboards and desserts. For more details, please telephone our store on

01332 349966.

I walked by your shop the other evening on my way back from the theatre and noticed that you were busy with guests dining, are you open every night? We are open until 6.00pm in the evenings; however, we do host many events on a Thursday evening between 7.00pm and 10.00pm,from our ever popular Bistro nights to Wine Tasting events, Tapas evenings, and other seasonal events. All the details of these can be found in store; alternatively you can sign up to our newsletter by emailing us at [email protected]

I’m trying to shop more local for my kitchen ingredients, avoiding the supermarkets, and a friend mentioned that your cafe housed a Food Hall which encompasses large counters of cheeses and meats, and all manner of store cupboard essentials; can you tell me more about what you stock please? Our Food Hall has been alikened to an Aladdin’s cave! Our deli counters are bursting with a huge selection of hand produced cheeses from both the British Isles and the continent, and we offer a wide range of fresh antipasti produce including cured meats and olives. We have fresh fruit and vegetables available, and shelves piled high with non perishable produce, such as chutneys and jams, biscuits, flour and baking ingredients, fresh free range eggs, table sauces and dried ingredients. We drive daily to The Loaf in Crich to bring their incredible artisan breads to the city, which include a range of Sourdoughs, Spelt and Rye breads, alongside the traditional batch loaves and bloomers, all of which sell out during the course of a day, such is the demand for fresh bread.

My mother recently confided that she’d dropped her empty casserole dishes into you to fill with various dishes that she’d chosen from your menu, which took all the stress away when she had friends for dinner last weekend. It sounds like an easy route to a great dinner party; can you explain more about the service? Its the perfect way to enjoy your own dinner party without all the hours slaving over the stove! We need to know at least 48 hours in advance of exactly what foods you would like us to prepare from our menu, and you can drop your own dishes in for use to use, or alternatively we can use our own dishes which you simply return to us after the event. We can assist with menu ideas, help compile a menu to take into account any dietary needs, and have it available for collection on the day required.

I’m struggling to find a gift for my friends

birthday, but know how much she loves

coming into your store; is it possible to

buy a gift voucher for her?

We have gift vouchers available in store, which can be produced to any amount,

and can be redeemed in part or full across both our stores. A great gift for that

hard to buy for friend or relative, they can shop in our food hall, enjoy a dining

experience with us, invest in our merchandise such as our oak and walnut

chopping and serving boards, or treat themselves to some of our takeaway meals.
