Pollinator Week 2019

National Pollinator Week is a time to celebrate pollinators and spread the word about what you can do to protect them.

The Pollinator Partnership is proud to announce that June 17-23, 2019 has been designated National Pollinator Week. 6/17/2019 12:00:00 AM 423 Washington St San Francisco CA 94111

Twelve years ago the U.S. Senate’s unanimous approval and designation of a week in June as “National Pollinator Week” marked a necessary step toward addressing the urgent issue of declining pollinator populations. Pollinator Week has now grown into an international celebration of the valuable ecosystem services provided by bees, birds, butterflies, bats and beetles.

Lepidoptera and Pollinator Gardening

This event is focused primarily on a specific order of pollinators: Lepidoptera, a.k.a. butterflies and moths. The time will be split into three different activities – an interactive “butterfly house” featuring local lepidopterans, an informational tour/lesson about native pollinator gardening, and a guided butterfly & moth nature walk - each about 35-40 minutes long. With 180,000 described species of the total 1.74 million described species on Earth, Lepidoptera, a single order, comprises nearly 10% of the planet’s entire known biodiversity! Due to their sheer variety and numbers, getting to know your local lepidopterans is a great way to engage with nature and monitor the environment. 6/23/2019 11:00:00 AM 2214 Sunstone Dr Fort Collins CO 80525

This event is limited to about ten parties (1 party = an individual or a family group). If you’re interested, please email [email protected]. The first ten people to email get a spot. Children of all ages are welcome!

Keeping the Bees: The Importance of Pollinators

Opening Art Reception Keeping the Bees: The Importance of Pollinators

Did you know that over 75% of the flowering plants on earth rely on animals and insects for pollination, including nearly 75% of our food crops? Without these creatures such as hummingbirds, bats, bees, beetles, butterflies, and flies, these plants would not be able to produce fruits and seeds, which would be devastating to people and the planet. Join Brushwood Center at Ryerson Woods in bringing attention to the importance and plight of the pollinator in this group art exhibition.

Pollination Exploration!

For National Pollinator Week, kids can help Historic London Town and Gardens make pollinator hotels in the Sound & Sensory Garden.

They'll take a special pollination-inspired garden tour before constructing a pollinator hotel to take home. These "hotels" will help out the pollinators in their own backyards.

Staff and volunteers will demonstrate different techniques for the construction of a bee hotel with natural materials. You'll learn about maintenance of the hotel, the importance of providing homes for solitary bees and other insects, and at-home solutions to help further pollinator conservation efforts.

After the London Town hotel is complete, make your own miniature pollinator hotel to take home! Spend the rest of the day learning how to dance like a bee and other games to learn about the wonderful world of pollination. 6/22/2019 10:00:00 AM 839 Londontown Rd Edgewater MD 21037

The Secrets of Bees

A special traveling exhibit! THE SECRETS OF BEES June 1 - September 30, 2019

The Secrets of Bees is an informative and interactive exhibit that allows families to learn about the bee population at a time when bees are under serious threat. Through educational videos and hands-on activities, children and adults will discover the many different species of bees and how we can help them continue to coexist in our world.

In the exhibit, visitors can study a plexiglass-covered "observation hive" with a video of bees in action and learn about the production of honey by working in a giant bee hive. Children can dress up as actual honeybees and gather pollen, pack pollen into honey comb, clean the hive, and help care for the Queen bee! They can also wear real beekeeper protective gear and work real wooden hives. Beekeepers can then extract the "honey" and "sell" it at a roadside stand. 6/22/2019 1:00:00 PM 230 N Rose St Kalamazoo MI 49007 www.kalamazoomuseum.org

Pollinator Planting

Otsego Land Trust is teaming up with NYSEG to host a Pollinator Planting event to celebrate Pollinator Week.

NYSEG will be providing several pollinator and wildlife species to be planted in and around the power line right-of-way on the property, including common elderberry, black chokeberry, American hazelnut, Eastern redbud, tulip poplar, and swamp white oak. All are welcome to join in on the planting fun, from child to adult.

Trees are a leading cause of power outages and may present unsafe conditions when growing near electric wires. NYSEG has promoted the enhancement of pollinator habitat on its rights-of-way because not only do many of our native plants provide forage and nesting sites for pollinators such as butterflies, moths, bees, bats, and birds, but also because many of our native pollinator plants are low-growing, long-living, and desirable in the vicinity of our electric wires. And, without pollinators, we’d have no food, and without food, we’d have no need for 6/17/2019 6:00:00 PM 127 Parslow Rd Hartwick NY 13348

The Power of Pollinators

The increasing awareness about the decline in pollinators has led non-beekeepers to ask what they can do - this presentation will cover the value of pollinators and how to support them. Emphasis will be put on the importance of providing forage and habitat for different types of pollinators (honey bees, native bees, butterflies, etc.) and how to protect them once they are part of the landscape. The direct and indirect impacts of human behavior and management practices in pollinator populations will be discussed so attendees will gain practical insight as to how to have more positive effects on pollinators. Following the lecture presentation, participants can taste some varieties of honey and/or take a walk through the UT gardens. How to Save the Bees at the Northwest Stream Center!

How to Save the Bees with Demarus Tevuk Sandlin

Did you know that 600+ bee species call Washington State home? Did you know that the majority of them are native bee species? While none of our native bees make honey, or live in hives, native bees are the most important pollinators of wild plants, helping to maintain ecosystem diversity. In addition, bees help feed the world: On average, one out of every three bites of food we eat needs a pollinator to reproduce!

Join us on Thursday June 20th, 2019 at 7PM at the Northwest Stream Center in Snohomish County’s McCollum Park for a wonderful presentation by local environmental educator, Demarus Tevuk Sandlin. She will teach us about our local native bees, how they live, and what they need to thrive. You’ll be introduced to bee diversity, be shown how pollination effectiveness needs bee diversity, learn information about lifecycle and where bees live, along with useful land management tips. You’ll go home with practical knowledge for what you can do in your 6/20/2019 7:00:00 PM 600 128th St SE Everett WA 98208
