FOR RELEASE: APRIL 13, 2010
CUOMO STOMPS LITTLE-KNOWN REPUBLICANS 2-1,
QUINNIPIAC UNIVERSITY NEW YORK STATE POLL FINDS;
PATAKI WOULD TOP GOP FIELD, LEAD GILLIBRAND
New York State Attorney General Andrew Cuomo has a 74 14 percent job approval rating and
commanding leads of 2-1 or more against the little-known Republican contenders in the race for
Governor, according to a Quinnipiac University poll released today.
With 40 percent of Republican voters undecided, former U.S. Senate candidate Rick
Lazio leads in a primary for Governor with 34 percent, followed by Buffalo businessman Carl
Paladino and Suffolk County Executive Steve Levy, each with 11 percent, the independent
Quinnipiac (KWIN-uh-pe-ack) University poll finds.
Cuomo leads in possible general election:
5526 percent over Lazio;
6024 percent over Paladino;
5724 percent over Levy.
In each matchup, Cuomo gets at least 80 percent of the Democratic vote, plus 20 percent
or more of the Republican vote and 50 percent or more of the independent vote.
Cuomos 74 percent job approval, continuing a nine-month string of plus 70 scores,
includes a 6424 percent approval among Republicans.
None of the Republican wannabes draws more than the generic Republican vote against
Attorney General Andrew Cuomo, but lets see what happens when we have a campaign, said
Maurice Carroll, director of the Quinnipiac University Polling Institute.
Besides burying the opposition, Cuomo continues to score high on job-performance.
Who are those guys? Steve Levy and Carl Paladino dont register at this stage. But
neither of them is a shrinking violet. As they start to make noise, well see if they can cut into
Rick Lazios leadfor the questionable reward of facing Cuomo.

New York State voters give Cuomo a 5919 percent favorability rating. For Lazio,
Paladino and Levy, 56 to 79 percent of voters say they dont know enough about each candidate to
form an opinion.
U.S. Senate Race
If former Gov. George Pataki jumps into the U.S. Senate race, he would get 45 percent toSen. Kirsten Gillibrands 40 percent. In a Republican primary, Pataki leads announced candidate
Bruce Blakeman 6415 percent. Gillibrand tops Blakeman 4725 percent.
New York State voters approve 4725 percent of the job Gillibrand is doing and give her
a 3723 percent favorability, as 39 percent dont know enough about her to form an opinion.
This is her highest approval and best favorability score since she was named Senator last year.
Pataki gets a 5233 percent favorability while 87 percent of voters dont know enough
about Blakeman to form an opinion.
The threat to Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand always has been from the Democratic left, but that
seems to have evaporated, Carroll said. On the Republican side, former Gov. George Pataki
could give her a run. IF he decides to run, that is. Bruce Blakeman remains anonymous.
New York State voters disapprove 6525 percent of the job Gov. David Paterson is doing,
but say 6233 percent that he should serve his full term rather than resign. This ties Gov.
Patersons worst approval score since he became Governor in 2008.
New York State voters approve 6126 percent of the job U.S. Sen. Charles Schumer is
doing and say 5332 percent that he should be reelected.
Sen. Chuck Schumer is back over 60 percent on his job approval, defying the
conventional wisdom that this is a bad year for incumbents, Carroll said.
President Barack Obama gets a 6233 percent approval, up from 5738 percent February
3 and reversing a slide that began last fall.
From April 611, Quinnipiac University surveyed 1,381 New York State registered
voters, with a margin of error of +/- 2.6 percentage points. The survey includes 411 Republicans
with a margin of error of +/- 4.8 percentage points.
The Quinnipiac University Poll, directed by Douglas Schwartz, Ph.D., conducts public
opinion surveys in New York, New Jersey, Connecticut, Pennsylvania, Florida, Ohio and
nationwide as a public service and for research.
