Some info about Mandurah and surrounds.

Only an hour south of Perth, the Peel Region

offers everything from beautiful coastlines

to Jarrah forests, all within a short drive.

Page 3: Police Sport Newsletter Two 2018policesport.org.nz/wp-content/uploads/2018/03/Newsletter...Police Sport Newsletter Two 2018 As always, the beginning of the year is very busy. Lots

This diverse region is Perth’s natural

adventure playground made up of the City

of Mandurah, and surrounding Shires of

Serpentine Jarrahdale, Murray, Waroona

and Boddington.

The experiences range from fun at the coast

to experiences in the bush. Zip along the

estuary or take to the open ocean on a jet

ski, go fishing, board a dolphin cruise, tee off

at world-class golf courses, go mountain

biking or hiking through Jarrah forests,

treetop climbing or wine tasting. The

opportunities are endless.

Meaning ‘meeting place of the heart’,

Mandurah was originally known as

‘Mandjoogoordap’ and is a dream location

for people who love being on, in or near the

water.

Western Australia’s fastest growing regional

city enjoys some of the most spectacular

waterways in the country, often compared

to a modern Venice and is known for its

natural beauty, pristine beaches, blue

manna crabs and wild dolphins.

The Peel-Harvey Estuary, Mandurah’s jewel

in the crown, is twice the size of Sydney

Harbour and ideal for canoeing, kayaking,

jet-skiing, boating, houseboating, dolphin

cruises, fishing and crabbing.

You’ll also love discovering amazing

adventures of the palate all over this tasty

region. Enjoy dining with a view at

Mandurah’s waterfront cafés and award-

winning restaurants along the Eastern

Foreshore and at Dolphin Quay or head out

into the countryside to find fantastic

wineries, breweries and genuine local

produce.

With plenty of accommodation options on

offer Mandurah is the perfect place to base

yourself and take daytrips out to explore the

region and its nature-based attractions.

The Murray area, with its historic towns

Pinjarra and Dwellingup, is a wonderland of

natural attractions and heritage sites.

Enjoy native wildlife and reconnect with

nature at the 50,000 hectares Lane Poole

Reserve near Dwellingup. There’s also an

extensive network of bushwalking tracks

along the Murray River and numerous

opportunities for mountain biking,

swimming, fishing and canoeing with hire

equipment and organised tours available in

Dwellingup.

Dwellingup is where trails meet. Traversing

1,000 kilometres, the Bibbulmun Track

meanders through towering jarrah and marri

forests of Dwellingup. Follow the triangular

markers symbolising the Waugal, the

rainbow serpent of Aboriginal dreaming. Or

check out the Munda Biddi Trail, meaning

“path through the forest”, and enjoy over

1,000 kilometres of cycling heaven. As well

as passing through magnificent Lane Poole

Reserve with its swimming, camping and

canoeing opportunities, the trail also takes

cyclists through the historic timber towns of

Jarrahdale and Dwellingup in the Peel

Region.

The Baldwin’s Bluff Nature Track at

Serpentine Falls National Park requires

hikers to be reasonably fit as it climbs up

gravel tracks to Baldwin’s Bluff. You will pass

through jarrah and marri woodlands,

eventually coming to wandoo woodland and

then finally over exposed granite. But it’s

worth the effort. When you get up to the

top, you will enjoy a view to die for.

From September to November wildflower

hunters can find incredible colour and

variety across the region on bush walks

through Jarrahdale and Serpentine National

Park, around Oakley Dam in Dwellingup and

the coastal areas of Yalgorup National Park

which is home to the ancient thrombolite

reef. These circular rock-like formations

provide a window into what our world

looked like hundreds of millions of years

ago.

About 50 kilometres east of Dwellingup, you

find Boddington. Half of the shire is state

forest and the area is popular for camping

and fishing and ideal for hiking, picnics and

bird-watching. Enjoy a picnic by the Hotham

River and soak up the view. About 35

kilometres south-west of Dwellingup, Lake

Navarino, also known as Waroona Dam, in

the town of Waroona is a popular spot for

bush walking, mountain biking, 4WDing and

camping.

NZPA Tennis Champs.

The Police tennis championships where held in

Tauranga over 2 days. The sunny BOP lived up to

it name with 2 scorching days and some good

and bad tennis played.

As usual the social grade was highly competitive

with the usual core of players from Rotorua and

Gisborne making the trip.

umbers were down in the open grades with a

solitary 2 woman in the woman’s grade so they

had to enter the social Men’s doubles grade.

The Men’s open singles represented a changing

of the guard, with a different name on the

singles trophy, first time in 30 years that Jeff

Sowter hasn’t attend and won the tournament.

The winner was Nigel Allen (Auckland) who beat

Mark Osbourne (Auckland) in the final, the

Men’s doubles winners were Mike Owen and

Grant Carpenter (Tauranga).

Woman’s Singles winner was Jo O’Connor

(Waitemata) who beat Wendy Wrigley

(Rotorua).

Thanks to Wendy Wrigley and Mark Osbourne

for organising the tournament this year, after a

discussion it has been decided to move the

tournament to Whangaparaoa tennis club for

next year to try to boost playing numbers, so all

Police tennis players (especially woman) get

involved and enter the tournament next year.

Open Sprints Taranaki Open Marathon Taranaki

Overall Points Winners Counties-Manukau It was a great turnout for the NZPA Waka Ama Nationals 2018 held Sunday 11 to Tuesday 13 March. 66 paddlers arrived on Sunday from Canterbury, Wellington, Taranaki, Counties-Manukau and Te Tai Tokerau and were welcomed to a Powhiri at Te Tii Marae, Waitangi.

Racing started on Monday where a shortened sprints day was held due to Cyclone Hola hitting us. However, this didn’t dampen the enthusiasm and paddlers soldiered on. Each grade had heat then a final on a 500m course on the Waitangi River. There was some close racing with only seconds separating some teams. On completion of sprint racing in true Northland style everyone enjoyed tuatua fritters, smoked marlin courtesy of Constable Doug Te Puni and his whanau.

Tuesday the long-distance marathon racing was held. Once Cyclone Hola cleared we were able to get out on the harbour and enjoy our racing. The novice teams completed a 10km course and the opens paddled a 15km course. Once again spirits were high and once again some close battles were had out on the water between teams and Districts.

Page 7: Police Sport Newsletter Two 2018policesport.org.nz/wp-content/uploads/2018/03/Newsletter...Police Sport Newsletter Two 2018 As always, the beginning of the year is very busy. Lots

Our racing was finished by a great prize giving evening, lamb on a spit meal and a seafood feast. This was finished off by a night of Kareoke.

Te Tai Tokerau would like to thank all the paddlers and supporters who travelled from afar to attended the Nationals. We would also like to thank the NZ Police Association and Police Sport for their support. Thank you and much appreciated.

Inter Services Softball

The NZ Police Men’s Team competed for the

Inter Services trophy in Palmerston North 13-

15th March. This is the 9th time the Police have

competed for this trophy and the 8th Win. Last

year we were beaten by Army in the final and

left us smarting as we had built up a good

rivalry.

We gathered at the Palmerston North Motel the

day before the tournament kicked off and in

true Police sports fashion some of us met for the

first time, introductions all round and some war

stories told. Good catch up with some long term

team mates and the stage was set.

Day 1

Game 1 Here we go, with our wounds still raw

from last year’s loss in the final our first game

was against Army. Their young pitcher and Hutt

Valley representative was throwing them down

hard. Our men were disciplined in the batter’s

box drawing some early walks and a few hits but

not enough to score. Army scored a run in the

second innings, our turn to bat and up stepped

Greg FOSTER, affectionately known as Fozzie to

his team mates and smacked one over centre

field fence to level the score. Army batted again

but couldn’t capitalise on the mixture of pitches

Fozz had in his battery arsenal. Police bat again

and Grunta Christian hits a double and he’s on

2nd base. Scotty ‘the Guru’ Dixon into the box

hits a line drive to right field, Army’s right field

runs in too early and lets the ball go by in a

diving attempt at the ball, after burners turned

on running at a speed close to Mach 5 with his

hair on fire gets sent home by Coach Love and

it’s an infield home run scoring two and it’s 3-1

things are looking good. Up steps AJ Dyason and

smacks one over centre right field fence and it’s

4-1. Army rallied a little to score 1 further run in

a close game not really reflected in the score

Police win 4-2. This was just the start we needed

after having lost both games to Army last year.

Game 2 Up next Airforce, thinking if we beat the

reigning champs Army then surely Airforce

would be no problem, right? Wrong, after failing

to capitalise on good scoring opportunities and

leaving a host of runners on base we went down

4 -3 to a very fired up Airforce.

Page 9: Police Sport Newsletter Two 2018policesport.org.nz/wp-content/uploads/2018/03/Newsletter...Police Sport Newsletter Two 2018 As always, the beginning of the year is very busy. Lots

Day 2 - We played Navy twice with 2 wins. A

solid 11 – 1 win in the morning saw us off to a

good start shaking off the previous days loss to

Airforce. Everyone was hitting, everyone got

some game time and the composite bats were

woken from their slumber. In our second game

Navy made a pitching change to someone who

was a little faster and resting on our laurels a bit

it was a very different story. Again failing to

capitalise and moving runners around at crucial

times saw a very close 4-2 win to Police.

Day3 (Finals)

Page 11: Police Sport Newsletter Two 2018policesport.org.nz/wp-content/uploads/2018/03/Newsletter...Police Sport Newsletter Two 2018 As always, the beginning of the year is very busy. Lots

With the games between Police, Army and

Airforce close we played Airforce first up.

Airforce played exceptionally well, with few

errors and slowly adding runs per innings. Next

thing we know we’re trailing 3 -0 and going into

our final innings meaning Airforce needs to get 3

of us out and the game is theirs putting us out of

the final. Digging deep we finally woke up and

strung a series of hits together to score 4 runs in

an epic come from behind win to take the game

4-3 breaking the hearts of the Airforce team who

were so close. There was even mention of a

conflict of interest against Police for stealing the

game from Airforce. With our resolve and

winners never quit attitude anything can happen

if you don’t give up.

The final was just as tough with the team struck

down by injures we rallied well to score 4 runs in

the 2nd innings. This was enough to hold on until

Army hit 2 home runs late in the game, but it

was too late, and we ran out 4 -2 winners in the

final.

Scott Dixon was player of game one against

Army and Thomie DAVIS was awarded player of

the games against Airforce and Army in the final.

Special mention goes to our Captain Senior

Sergeant Greg FOSTER who after 22 odd years in

the Police has retired and went out on a high.

Thanks for all your efforts Fozz you will be sorely

missed. Also, a big thank you to Police Sport for

your continued loyalty and assistance in making

this tournament possible for us. To Senior

Constable Brendon Smith for his administrative

contribution in organising accommodation,

travel, uniforms, funding the list goes on. Kia

ora.

NZPA Triathlon Champs

An excellent day in Dunedin for the NZ Police

Triathlon championship’s. A total of 11

competitors from Canterbury, Otago and

Southland took part on the stunning Otago

Harbour course consisting of a brisk swim at

MacAndrew Bay, fast cycling conditions taking in

the spectacular views as cyclists headed towards

the albatross colony, followed by an equally fast

run beside the harbour. The Tri was held in

conjunction with the Dunedin Triathlon Club’s

Otago Champs. Dunedin is hoping to host a NZ

Police South Island Triathlon in 2019 using the

same venue. Congratulations to all that took

part and thank you for your support!
