Farewell, Lily Grace Police Transport Command’s
Sgt Bill Green and his wife
Filomena felt so strongly about the
deceased newborn found in the
sand at South Maroubra Beach last
November, that they unofficially
adopted the child before giving her
a name and, with the approval of
the Coroner, a dignified farewell.
Lily Grace’s short life was
celebrated at a touching memorial
service earlier this year, where she
was farewelled by more than 100
people who had never met her
but will always remember her.
Eastern Beaches Commander,
Det Supt Gavin Dengate
commended the couple for their
generosity and overwhelming
gesture of love.
They were generously
supported by a number of
community members and
businesses, in particular Raine
& Horne Maroubra.
Investigations into the child’s
death are continuing.

From Coppers to Diggers The stories behind the names
listed on the Roll of Honour in
the SPC foyer are finally being
told. From Coppers to Diggers
outlines the military service of
police who served in WWI as well
as in other conflicts between
1885 and 1976.
This is a sequel to Service in
Two Uniforms, which featured
the military service of police
during WWII. Now in his early
80s, author Brian Inman started
working for the NSWPF in 1951
when he was 15 and worked
with a number of officers listed
on the Roll of Honour.
Copies of From Coppers to
Diggers are available for $15
plus postage by contacting Brian
Inman on ph: 9634 5398. All
proceeds will go to Legacy.

More drug tests in the West Traffic & Highway Patrol
Commander, Assistant
Commissioner John Hartley
toured the state’s west in June
to discuss drug driving and
road safety in the Mudgee and
Canobolas areas.
During random drug tests
over one June weekend, one in
every six drivers tested positive
in Mudgee, while one in three
tested positive in Orange – the
worst result in the state.
“Obviously people don’t think
they can get caught out here,
that central western NSW is
not getting attention,” Assistant
Commissioner Hartley said.
“We’ve increased our drug tests
from 30,000 to 65,000 a year, and
that will increase to 100,000.”
The drug tests detect whether
a driver has cannabis, ecstasy
or methylamphetamines in
their system.

Bravery in Binalong Almost 2000 people descended
on the village of Binalong earlier
this year as the local community
remembered the bravery of police
150 years ago, during the shootout
that killed bushranger Johnny
Gilbert in 1865.
The main street was abuzz with
street stalls, horses, stagecoaches,
period costumes, music and
poetry. There was also a street
parade, a re-enactment of the
shootout that ended the Hall
Gang’s reign of terror, a wild
colonial dance at the local hall and
‘Gilbert’s Wake’ at the Binalong
Hotel on Sunday morning.
Gilbert, who was buried in the

Ask GavCst Liz asks “I am in trouble for allegedly sending an email to another
officer. I was on that day but certainly didn’t send the email.
I can only guess that my access was open and I was away
from the computer.”
Gavin’s reply “The fact is, you are responsible for maintaining the security
of your access profile and everything that is generated on it.
You will have to account for this matter but learn from the
experience and never leave your access open for others
to use. A fast path to locking your computer is hitting the
Microsoft Windows key along with the ‘L’ key.”
Ask Gav questions are based on matters which have been raised in the field and are provided in this format for information. Any questions can be directed to #PSCMPU.
Murder charge for OMCG president The president of the Windsor
chapter of the Rebels OMCG has
been charged with murder.

Homicide Squad and Brisbane
Water LAC formed Strike Force
Zeitz to investigate.
Supported by the Tactical
Operations Unit, detectives
entered a home in Kingswood
at dawn on Friday 19 June 2015
and arrested the 35-year-old
Rebels president. They seized
steroids and other items from the
Kingswood home, as well as
from a home in Quakers Hill.
This followed the arrest earlier
this year of a 29-year-old man
at a property in South Windsor
who was also charged with
Mr Starling’s murder.

Fishing for the future Shoalhaven LAC recently gave a
number of local kids the chance
to wet a line with local police, as
part of the two-day program.
Funded by our Crime
Prevention Grants Program
under the Aboriginal Strategic
Direction, the event was primarily
open to Indigenous children aged
12 to 16 who show the potential
to be a young leader.
In the Welcome to Country,
Uncle Willy Dickson spoke
about the importance of fishing
to the Aboriginal way of life.
This was followed by talks
on leadership and respect.
More than 120 fish were
caught including snapper,
morwong and flathead. Program
Coordinator, Insp Steve Johnson
said one of the kids said the
fishing trip was the best day
of his life.
The program would not have
been possible without help from
the NSW Department of Primary
Industries, the Nowra Youth
Centre, Fishing World magazine,
South Nowra BCF, McGlashan
Media, Shimano Fishing Australia,
McCallum’s Tackleworld and
Escape Fishing Charters.
