A few notes of welcome.... All are welcome!

We’re glad to be together in God’s service today.

Ask a host/usher if you need help with anything. Hearing assistance devices are available at the sound booth. Our freewill offering supports the general operating budget or may be

designated for special projects. All are invited to receive Jesus in the bread and wine of communion. There is

both a common cup and intinction available. If you do not wish to partake in communion today, we hope you will come forward for a blessing with your hands crossed/or folded.

If you wish, a prayer minister will pray with you during communion time. Most songs are in the “ELW”- the red hymnal book—which you’ve been

handed as you entered today. The page numbers or hymn number are listed by the songs.

To help follow along and participate in worship today, there are arrows indicating when to stand as you are able.

Readings and responses are in light print and/or bold print. The assembly’s parts are in bold face type.

The “Count Me In” form is a place for everyone to share their presence in worship. Let us know you were here and share any feedback/suggestions or prayer requests. These forms are collected later in the service during the freewill Offering.

+ Pointe of Grace Cross +

Connie Lewis designed the open cross to hold a cruciform that reflects the crucifixion of Good Friday. The top of the cross is open to remind us that

Christ rose and the story didn’t end with his death. The Cruciform is placed in the wooden cross on Good Friday and removed before Easter morning. Other

times of the year, there will be a dove in its center to remind us the Holy Spirit is always present and guiding us.

Words of Welcome

Confession and Forgiveness

Blessed be the holy Trinity, ☩ one God, healer of our every ill, source of

unending mercy. Amen.

Embraced in enduring grace and good hope, let us turn again to God,

confessing the truth about ourselves.

Silence is kept for reflection.

Merciful God, we come before you, beloved but broken. We have not always treated

others as we would want them to treat us. We have not always called

out injustice and abuse. We have not always been kind to ourselves.

We have not always taken care of the world we share with other living creatures. Remind us of who we are, beloved children bathed in your

love. Renew us by your Spirit to live as your holy people, bringing

healing to the brokenness around us.

Amen.

At every moment you are held in existence by the love of God, renewed by

the Spirit within and among you, and made alive again in Christ. Receive

this assurance in Jesus’ name: you are ☩ forgiven and freed to live for the

healing of the world. Amen.

The assembly turns to follow the cross as it processes through the

assembly. You may bow as the cross passes to reverence the mystery of Christ with us.

Gathering Hymn Rejoice, for Christ Is King ELW 430

We begin worship with the “Gathering.”

A time of welcome, song, and greeting. It’s our

way of turning towards God in worship, opening

our hearts and ears to hear the Word, and to prepare ourselves to partake in the Meal.

Please turn to the back of the sanctuary where the baptismal font is located to start the

Confession and Forgiveness.

Apostolic Greeting The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, the love of God, and the communion of the Holy Spirit be with you all. And also with you.

Prayer of the Day O God, our true life, to serve you is freedom, and to know you is unending joy. We worship you, we glorify you, we give thanks to you for your great glory. Abide with us, reign in us, and make this world into a fit habitation for your divine majesty, through Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen.

The assembly is seated after the prayer.

First Reading Jeremiah 23:1-6

A reading from Jeremiah

1Woe to the shepherds who destroy and scatter the sheep of my pasture! says the Lord. 2Therefore thus says the Lord, the God of Israel, concerning the shepherds who shepherd my people: It is you who have scattered my flock, and have driven them away, and you have not attended to them. So I will attend to you for your evil doings, says the Lord. 3Then I myself will gather the remnant of my flock out of all the lands where I have driven them, and I will bring them back to their fold, and they shall be fruitful and multiply. 4I will raise up shepherds over them who will shepherd them, and they shall not fear any longer, or be dismayed, nor shall any be missing, says the Lord. 5The days are surely coming, says the Lord, when I will raise up for David a righteous Branch, and he shall reign as king and deal wisely, and shall execute justice and righteousness in the land. 6In his days Judah will be saved and Israel will live in safety. And this is the name by which he will be called: “The Lord is our righteousness.”

The reading concludes:

Holy Wisdom, Holy Word. Thanks be to God. Page 2

+ Word +

Today’s reading builds on the common ancient Near Eastern metaphor of the king as shepherd.

Judah’s unjust rulers have caused their

people, their “flock,” to be scattered.

Nevertheless, the Lord will raise up a new and righteous shepherd who

will rule a restored Judah.

Psalm 46 1God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble. 2Therefore we will not fear, though the earth be moved, and though the mountains shake in the depths of the sea; 3though its waters rage and foam, and though the mountains tremble with its tumult. 4There is a river whose streams make glad the city of God, the holy habitation of the Most High. 5God is in the midst of the city; it shall not be shaken; God shall help it at the break of day. 6The nations rage, and the kingdoms shake; God speaks, and the earth melts away. 7The Lord of hosts is with us; the God of Jacob is our stronghold. 8Come now, regard the works of the Lord, what desolations God has brought upon the earth; 9behold the one who makes war to cease in all the world; who breaks the bow, and shatters the spear, and burns the shields with fire. 10“Be still, then, and know that I am God; I will be exalted among the nations; I will be exalted in the earth.” 11The Lord of hosts is with us; the God of Jacob is our stronghold. Second Reading Colossians 1:11-20

11May you be made strong with all the strength that comes from his glorious power, and may you be prepared to endure everything with patience, while joyfully 12giving thanks to the Father, who has enabled you to share in the inheritance of the saints in the light. 13He has rescued us from the power of darkness and transferred us into the kingdom of his beloved Son, 14in whom we have redemption, the forgiveness of sins. 15He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of all creation; 16for in him all things in heaven and on earth were created, things visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or powers—all things have been created through him and for him. 17He himself is before all things, and in him all things hold together. 18He is the head of the body, the church; he is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead, so that he might come to have first place in everything. 19For in him all the fullness of God was pleased to dwell, 20and through him God was pleased to reconcile to himself all things, whether on earth or in heaven, by making peace through the blood of his cross.

The reading concludes: Holy Wisdom, Holy Word. Thanks be to God.

I will be exalted among the nations. (Ps. 46:10)

An early Christian hymn praises the mystery of the political, personal, and mystical Christ, the one who was present at creation and is eternally

reigning with God.

Gospel Acclamation ELW page 151

Gospel Luke 23:33-43 The gospel is announced:

The Holy Gospel according to St. Luke. Glory to you, O Lord. 33When they came to the place that is called The Skull, they crucified Jesus there with the criminals, one on his right and one on his left. 34

[Then Jesus said, “Father, forgive them; for they do not know what they are doing.”] And they cast lots to divide his clothing. 35And the people stood by, watching; but the leaders scoffed at him, saying, “He saved others; let him save himself if he is the Messiah of God, his chosen one!” 36The soldiers also mocked him, coming up and offering him sour wine, 37and saying, “If you are the King of the Jews, save your-self!” 38There was also an inscription over him, “This is the King of the Jews.”

39One of the criminals who were hanged there kept deriding him and saying, “Are you not the Messiah? Save yourself and us!” 40But the other rebuked him, saying, “Do you not fear God, since you are under the same sentence of condemnation? 41And we indeed have been condemned justly, for we are getting what we deserve for our deeds, but this man has done nothing wrong.” 42Then he said, “Jesus, remember me when you come into your kingdom.” 43He replied, “Truly I tell you, today you will be with me in Paradise.”

The gospel concludes:

The Gospel of the Lord. Praise to you, O Christ.

Page 4

The assembly stands to welcome the Gospel.

Amid scoffing and slander from those who sarcastically call him

Messiah and king, Jesus reveals that to be

Messiah and king is to give one’s life for others. Here he uses his power to welcome a despised sinner to paradise but puts his own death into

God’s hands.

A Time for the Children

All children are invited to come forward, with their parents/guardians as desired, for a personal message on our scriptural readings of the day.

Sermon Pastor Pam Gompf Silence for reflection follows the sermon.

Hymn of the Day Of the Father’s Love Begotten ELW 295

Confession of Faith: Apostles’ Creed With the whole church, let us confess our faith together: I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth. I believe in Jesus Christ, God’s only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried; he descended to the dead. On the third day he rose again; he ascended into heaven, he is seated at the right hand of the Father, and he will come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.

The assembly is seated.

The Apostles’ Creed, written in 4th CE, is one of the oldest

professions of faith and is confessed by nearly all Christians around

the world.

Prayers of Intercession The assembly stands as able.

United with the saints of every time and place, let us pray for the church, those in need, and all of God’s creation. A brief silence. God, you are our righteousness. Fill us with the hope of steadfast love and shine light on places that were invisible to us, so that we see your kingdom made visible on earth. Hear us, O God. Your mercy is great. God, your reign extends from the black holes of the universe to a single grain of sand. Guide us to sustain and restore all of your creation, and to live in peace with this planet. Hear us, O God. Your mercy is great. God, you are exalted among nations. Protect the people in countries ravaged by violence, warfare, and hatred, and raise up wise and generous leaders to find their strength in you. Hear us, O God. Your mercy is great. God, you are our help in times of trouble. Like a shepherd who guards the sheep, watch over your flock: those who are sick and hurting in body, mind, or spirit, those who are mocked, and those who are lonely, especially... Hear us, O God. Your mercy is great. God, you call us forth from this place to lives of service. Equip the out-reach ministries of this congregation (especially). Use our hands and feet, sharing Christ’s love with neighbors in need. Hear us, O God. Your mercy is great. For what else do the people of God pray for today? Hear us, O God. Your mercy is great. (for petitions) Praise God; From whom all blessings flow. (for thanks) Almighty God, the beginning and the end, we rejoice that one day we will share in the inheritance of the saints. In thanksgiving, we remember those who have gone before us. Hear us, O God. Your mercy is great. Rejoicing in hope, we lift our prayers to you, most gracious Lord, trust-ing that you have received them in your care. Amen.

Offering As the Grains of Wheat ELW 465

Presentation of Gifts The assembly stands as able as the gifts are brought forward Offering Prayer

God our creator, you give us all we are, all we have, all we bring, and all we need. Draw us together around your table with all your saints on earth and in your eternal home. Let us eat and drink your promise of new life, that we might be your promise to the world, spoken in Jesus’ name. Amen.

The Great Thanksgiving

The Lord be with you. And also with you. Lift up your hearts. We lift them to the Lord. Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. It is right to give our thanks and praise. It is indeed right, our duty and our joy, that we should at all times and in all places give thanks and praise to you, almighty and merciful God, through our Savior Jesus Christ; who on this day overcame death and the grave, and by his glorious resurrection opened to us the way of everlast-ing life. And so, with all the choirs of angels, with the church on earth and the hosts of heaven, we praise your name and join their unending hymn:

prepare our hearts to receive Christ through

song/music.)

We offer our gifts for the service of God.

Our gifts of time, talent, and treasure are used to proclaim God’s love in

the world.

Included in our gifts are the bread and wine, which will

become the body and blood of Christ.

Through these simple elements, God comes

among us each time we share in this heavenly

feast and reincorporates us into

the Body of Christ.

Communion will be served at the front of the

sanctuary. Come

Holy, Holy, Holy ELW 190

Holy, mighty, and merciful Lord, heaven and earth are full of your glory. In great love you sent to us Jesus, your Son, who reached out to heal the sick and suffering, who preached good news to the poor, and who, on the cross, opened his arms to all.

In the night in which he was betrayed, our Lord Jesus took bread, and gave thanks; broke it, and gave it to his disciples, saying: Take and eat; this is my body, given for you. Do this for the remembrance of me.

Again, after supper, he took the cup, gave thanks, and gave it for all to drink, saying: This cup is the new covenant in my blood, shed for you and for all people for the forgiveness of sin. Do this for the remembrance of me. Remembering, therefore, his death, resurrection, and ascension, we await his coming in glory.

Pour out upon us the Spirit of your love, O Lord, and unite the wills of all who share this heavenly food, the body and blood of Jesus Christ, our Lord; to whom, with you and the Holy Spirit, be all honor and glory, now and forever. Amen.

By singing the Sanctus (“Holy, holy, holy…”) we join the song of all creation. We add our voices with their song

along with all the saints who have died before us and now sit around the throne of

God.

The presiding minister recounts God’s

unconditional gift of love through Jesus

Christ and the ministry given to all the world, of

love and forgiveness, culminating in this meal and in this place we are

rejoined into God’s saving work in the

world.

The Lord’s Table is open to ALL people

without exception. You do not have to be a

Lutheran to commune here - this is Christ’s

Table without barriers. Children are most certainly welcome.

Christ invites each of us to join in this feast

of life and love.

Page 11: Pointe of Grace Lutheran Church · 11/24/2019  · O God, our true life, to serve you is freedom, and to know you is unending joy. We worship you, we glorify you, we give thanks to

All are invited to pray the Lord’s prayer in the

form and language which speaks to them.

The bread is broken, and all are invited to the

Lord’s Supper.

Communion will be served at the front of the

sanctuary. Come forward to receive the

bread and cup - the body and blood of Christ - or

inform the ushers if you need communion brought to your seat.

If you choose not to commune, you are welcome to come

forward with arms crossed over your chest and receive a blessing.

To receive communion, hold out your hand for

the bread. You may consume the bread and then drink directly from

the Common Cup, or hold onto the bread until the second cup (chalice) is offered. Dip (intinct) the bread in the wine (red) or grape juice

(white).

After communing, please return to your seat by the side aisle.

Gluten-free wafers are available by request.

Page 9

Gathered into one by the Holy Spirit, let us pray as Jesus taught us:

Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us. Save us from the time of trial and deliver us from evil. For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours, now and forever. Amen.

Invitation God keeps adding places to the table. Come to the banquet that has no end! Communion Instructions are given. Prayer Ministers are available. Communion The assembly is seated. Agnus Dei Lamb of God ELW pg 154

placed across your chest. The minister will place a hand on your

head or heads and bless you.

There are prayer ministers available to pray with you in the

back of the sanctuary if you’d like today.

Having witnessed the

goodness of God in the Eucharistic Feast, we are sent into the world to proclaim the good news through word

and deed.

The assembly is seated for announcements.

The assembly stands for the Sending Prayer.

Please turn to face the cross as it recesses.

You may bow as it passes, reverencing the

mystery of Christ among us as the
