Pastor’s Pen

Now comes the month of celebrating Thanksgiving Day. People approach that in

different ways, given their recent life experiences, their outlooks, their faith, and other

factors. Somehow, the Jews of the Old Testament found ways to thank God for his

many gifts and his place in their lives, no matter the situations they were in. The

Psalms are full of descriptions of troubled lives that still praise and magnify the God

of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob.

Maybe you are among those who have had such a rich experience of life lately that

you are not going to find it hard to thank God this Thanksgiving. Or, maybe you have

struggled a lot lately and giving thanks comes a bit more grudgingly than usual. After

a long life full of much to celebrate and much to cause distress, John Wesley died in

1791 with these words upon his lips: "The best of all is, God is with us." No matter

what, no matter the circumstances, Wesley knew that the Lord was never removed

from his life, that he would never be separated from the source of his existence. He

knew this because he knew the Christ of God, the one sent to deliver and reassure, to

walk with us and not faint, to accompany our every move.

As our church worships and meets this month, may the holiness of giving thanks

encompass us and feed our spirits. While you and yours make plans to gather together,

I will share with you a couple of prayers that John Wesley put into his prayer book for

use by Methodists in the new church in the newly-formed United States in the late

1700's. Let these touch your hearts and warm your souls as this month unfolds.

Blessings on all of you.

"O God, our refuge and strength, who art the author of all godliness; Be ready, we

beseech thee, to hear the devout prayers of thy Church; and grant that those things

which we ask faithfully we may obtain effectually; through Jesus Christ our

Lord. Amen"

"O Lord, we beseech thee to keep thy Church and household continually in thy true

religion; that they who do lean only upon the hope of thy heavenly grace may

evermore be defended by they mighty power; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen."

Missions Up Date

What a giving, gracious congregation you are!

Because of your generosity and compassion, we raised

$5,950.80 for Stop Hunger Now during the month of

October! On Saturday, October 17, approximately 50

adults and youth gathered from 8-11:30 a.m. and pack-

aged 20,520 meals. That isn't a misprint! Our church

packaged 20,520 meals for Stop Hunger Now because of

your giving. We will find out soon where these meals will

go and we will let you know. Thank you all very much!

With Thanksgiving right around the corner, the Missions Committee

is working with Caring & Sharing to provide meals for those in need in

our community. We will place containers in the FLC lobby starting on

Nov. 1st for you to place non-perishable items. Each week in November

we will collect a different item. Here are the items needed the most:

Nov. 1 - 7 gravy (packets or canned)

Nov. 8 - 14 canned green beans (or any other canned vegetable item)

Nov. 15 - 21 Stove Top Stuffing ( HOWEVER )

The following additional items are also needed for a Thanksgiving dinner:

Turkey/Ham, Potatoes (can or box), Cranberry Sauce, Yams,

Chicken Broth, Canned Peas, Canned Carrots, Canned Fruit, Desserts

Starting in mid-November, the Missions Committee will be working with Marri

Helen and the Children's Ministry to support Operation Christmas Child. For the

second year, PWUMC will serve as a drop-off location for OCC shoeboxes. We

will need lots of help with this wonderful opportunity to serve and we will be

asking for support soon.

Blessings & many many thanks for everything you all do!

Thank You!! The Missions Committee

PWUMC November 2015 Women’s Ministry News

November is a busy month in the life of our women’s ministry and we hope you will be a part

of every event! The first Tuesday, November 3rd will be our regular meeting time in the Ste-

phen Center at 9:30 am. We will get updates on the Angel Tree project, children’s home in

Milton, plans for Christmas decorations, the winter women’s retreat, and the status of other

committees work. When reflecting on our stewardship campaign’s theme, “Offering Faithful-

ness” is reflected in all the ways our women’s group is in service. This is an exciting time to

be involved in the many projects of our growing women’s ministry.

POINT WASHINGTON WOMEN’S MINISTRY RETREAT JANUARY 29th AND 30th 2016 AT THE

SAN DESTIN HILTON: All women of our church and community are invited to attend so make your

reservation early. The total cost is $140 per person which includes overnight lodging with two women in a

room and Friday evening dinner and Saturday breakfast. For those who don’t want to share a room, the

total cost is $210 for a single. Our theme this year is “FOOTPRINTS IN THE SAND” and the retreat will

include a guest speaker, music, games, entertainment and some helpful “in the know” segments for women

of all ages. Registration forms will be posted beginning November in the lobby of the FLC and throughout

the church areas and there will be a link to register on our Church’s Facebook page. A deposit of $40 is

requested by November 30th. . Please make checks payable to “PWUMWM” which stands for Point

Washington United Methodist Women’s Ministry. Checks may be placed in the offering plates but please

note “Women’s Retreat” in the memo line. For those who would like to attend, but may not have

the “extra” funds for this event, we are offering free scholarships again this year---please make your re-

quest through the church office. For more information, please contact Roxanne Thompson at 412 877 0111

or email her at [email protected] or Mary Lamb at 901 237 3298 or email her at

[email protected],

As we look at ways to grow this 2nd annual event, we are asking for donations and/or sponsorships for the

retreat. We are expecting 100 women to attend this year and we would appreciate donations for scholar-

ships for those women who cannot afford to pay for a reservation and to cover the general costs

involved in making it a success! Your personal or business information will be listed in the programs we

distribute with our registration packets making you an official sponsor of this year’s retreat! Please contact

Janice Helms at [email protected] or Ashley Plummer at [email protected] to

donate. Any amount would be appreciated!

As you celebrate Thanksgiving this month, may you and your family have a blessed time with your loved

ones and reflect on all the ways we are thankful as a church family!

The next monthly meeting of PWUMM will be NOVEMBER 7, 2015 at 8 AM

in the Stephens Center. Come and join us for breakfast, devotion and a short

business meeting. We will continue to discuss the organization of our outreach

focus programs and we will have a special presentation by one of our senior

youth, Lee Cox, who is organizing a community mission project.

This presentation has been delayed due to Lee’s pressing schedule but all is

ready now and confirmed. Other items of discussion will be the renewal of our charter,

Christmas decoration at the church and upcoming events through the holidays and next year.

2016 is just around the corner and the UMM will plan to be a part of the outreach program to

the community and beyond. The December meeting will be on the 5th assuming there are no

conflicts with seasonal activities.

Emmaus The next monthly meeting of the Emmaus Cluster at

PWUMC will be November 16, 2015 at 6:30 PM in the

Sanctuary. The leader for this meeting will be Malcolm

Flanagan. I am pleased to say the last Cluster meeting in

October saw a record turnout and Scott Provow’s presenta-

tion was most enlightening. It is important to make time to

attend these cluster meetings as it is the way in which the Emmaus program at

PWUMC is maintained strong and effective in our church and the programs

we sponsor are supported by your participation. There are many fom our

Emmaus Cluster serving at Blue Lake Emmaus Walk #245, November 12-

15th. Please mark your calendar for Saturday the 14th to join us for the

service that evening. For those wanting to carpool, we will meet at the

Walton County annex parking lot around 4:14. Please me a a “head up” if you

want to join us and would like to share a ride.

We will have an agape meeting on November 23rd at 6:30 PM in the Stephens

Center to prepare for the Men’s Walk #246. Remember to pray for the

pilgrims on the upcoming Women’s walk #245.
