A word from the Administrator…
Fairview is committed to providing compassionate care to our residents, employing a caring and knowledgeable staff, and adhering to the highest pro-fessional standards. Our mission goes beyond that however; we strive to con-stantly improve the services we offer, look for new and innovative ways to give residents more choice in their daily lives, and to reach out to the entire com-munity by exercising responsible stew-ardship. This hard work and dedication is reflective in our Five Star Rating by The Center for Medicare and Medicaid Services.
During the upcoming holiday season, we are especially aware of our impor-tant connection with and gratitude for our employees and all of those who support us in the community.
Therefore, on behalf of the Board of Di-rectors and our entire staff I would like to take this opportunity to express my sincere thanks to all of you and best wishes to you and your families for a happy, healthy and safe holiday season.
James K. Malloy, Administrator

FAIRVIEW DEVELOPMENT REPORT
Fairview has been blessed over the past several months with a tremendous outpouring of support. Individuals, corporations, foundations, and community groups have all chosen to help us in a financial way. We are most grateful. A list of donors to our auction and our other various fundraising programs can be found on pages 4 and 5.
Although the economy has not been the best, we have experienced a surge in giving over the past year. For that we are quite thankful.
We realize that our donors have many philanthropic choices. With no increase in Medicaid reimbursement over the next two years Fairview will be more challenged than ever to operate in the black. It is only through the generosity of our constituents that we will be able to continue to provide the finest quality of care to our residents.
Our annual fund will be closing on December 31. A donation request letter is enclosed in this issue along with a response envelope. If you have already made an annual fund gift we thank you. If you would like to in-crease that gift, or make a first-time gift, we would be most grateful.

Fairview Antiques & Collectibles Auction 2009 Photos...
FAIRVIEW AUCTION SURPASSES GOAL
The 7th annual antiques and collectibles auction was held on November 7 at Fairview. We want to thank the many sponsorship donors as well as everyone who donated an auction item or dessert for making this year’s event the most successful yet. Special thanks go to David and Janet Reindel who made a $7,500.00 donation as the lead sponsors for this year’s auction. Our net profit was $60,280.48. All proceeds will be used to pay for the continued implementation of our electronic medical records system. The total revenue that has been generated from all of the auctions is just over $310,000.00. This money has been used to refurbish the recrea-tion room, renovate the first floor sun room, for the building fund, for new furniture for residents’ rooms, to renovate the lobby and Thames Room, and for computer upgrades. If you would like to make a donation to the 2010 auction please contact David Brown at [email protected].

GROTON – LEDYARD ROTARY MAKESDONATION FOR THERAPY GYM…
FAIRVIEW NURSE IS ONE OFTHE FIRST BENEFICIARIES
The Therapy Department at Fairview realized one of its dreams this fall when the Groton – Ledyard Ro-tary Club made a $500.00 donation to Fairview. This gift was used to purchase a 40” widescreen television for the therapy gym. Residents both long and short-term will now be able to utilize the Wii fitness game in conjunction with the new television as part of their ongoing therapy treatment. Pictured employ-ing the W i i therapy game is F a i r -v i e w n i g h t n u r s e D o n n a S c o t t w h o recently had hip replacement surgery. Choosing a facility to receive post surgical care and rehabilita-tion can be somewhat daunting. However, when you have worked in a facility such as Fairview it makes the decision just a little bit easier. Donna chose Fairview because she needed to practice ac-tivities of daily living within the limitations set by her surgeon. What she required from us was a way to prepare for everything she would need to do at
home such as work-ing in the kitchen, managing stairs with confidence, and using the lavatory. Achiev-ing all of her goals in just a few short days allowed Donna to re-turn home quicker than she expected. We were glad to be able to help ‘one of our own’ on her road to recovery.

RESIDENT TURNS 100 YEARS OLD
Another Fair-view resident celebrated a milestone birth-day in October. Elsie Milfort joins three other Fairview resi-dents who are 100. They are Dorothy Maxson, Julie Sprafke and Lois Taylor. The recreation department planned a special party for Elsie that included cake and flowers. Other resi-dents joined in the celebration as well. Pictured with Elsie are members of the recreation department staff along with friends.
CHELSEA GROTON BANK
MAKESSIZEABLE
GRANTDONATION
The Chelsea Groton Bank Foundation recently made a $2,000.00 donation to Fairview to help defray the cost of making one of our courtyard doors open and close automatically. This will greatly benefit all of our residents who use the courtyard. Pictured is Fairview resident Frances Vera with Chelsea Groton Bank CEO, Duncan Stoddard. Mrs. Vera is the President of the Residents’ Council. She initiated the idea of making the door automatic. The Chelsea Groton Bank continues to be a generous supporter ofFairview.FAIRVIEW
RECEIVES NEW KEY-
BOARD
Resident Alice Martin loves to sing and play the piano. She is well known for singing
“Happy Birthday” to staff members. She often teams up with other residents to sing songs of the season, especially around the holidays. Although a piano is available in the first floor dining room, Al-ice thought it would be a good idea to have one in the recreation room as well. So, she decided to do-nate the funds required to purchase a keyboard. She spends many hours practicing on the keyboard and singing. Alice is also a member of the Osprey Re-bekah Lodge #20 which meets the second Wednes-day of each month in Fairview’s auditorium.

T w e n t y -eight cadets from the U.S. Coast G u a r d A c a d e m y volunteered s e v e r a l hours of their time on Sunday, September 13 to visit with Fairview residents. The special occasion was Grandparents Day. The cadets have made several visits to Fairview over the years. Each time they come they have made a tremendous difference in the
quality of the lives of our r e s i d e n t s . Fairview is grateful to the cadets and the Academy for their contin-

VFW OFFICIALS VISIT FAIRVIEW
Dignitaries from the Connecticut VFW visited Fair-view on October 24 to thank all residents in person who have served in the armed forces. During their visit they met resident George Soloweyko, an Air Force veteran of World War II. George served from 1941-45 with two of these years in the thick of the Pacific battle for the Mariana Islands. Pictured with George is (L-R) Richard Denoyer, National Junior Vice Commander-in-Chief, Fred Schluntz, Chief of Staff of the Connecticut VFW, and Bill Hornok, Connecticut VFW Commander.
BREAKFAST IN THE BISTRO
The dietary department has been hard at work along with several staff members to bring a brand new quality-of-life program to Fairview residents. In Oc-tober, the Fairview bistro began offering a restaurant style breakfast every Tuesday from 7:30am to 8:30am to residents with no dietary restrictions. Pictured serving one of the tables is Christine Mal-com, a physical therapist at Fairview. Residents at the table above are: (L-R) Margaret Gerlipp, Kathe-rine Muller, Frances Vera, and Mary McNeil. Fresh
e g g s ( a n y style), home fries, bacon, fruit, pastries, juice and coffee are served by volunteer staff members. This is one more way that Fair-view can pro-
vide its residents increased choices in how they lead t h e i r d a i l y l i v e s . I n -creased choices t r a n s -late into a higher qual i ty of life.
VETERANS DAY RECOGNITION
The Fairview Recreation Department held a Veter-ans Day celebration on November 11 in the first floor dining room. Several of Fairview’s residents are veterans. Cake, cookies and fruit drinks were served. Pictured is resident Bill Jacobsen with his
wife Shirley and daughter Lee. Bill is a 36 year Navy veteran. He served in WWII, the Korean War, and the Viet-nam War where he
earned the Bronze Star. Volunteer clowns April Britt and her granddaughter Kelsey Forde also par-ticipated in the celebration.

TESTIMONIAL FROM THE RUBEGA FAMILY
November 4, 2009
Mr. James MalloyFairview Administrator
Jim,
I wish to express my (and my entire family’s) sincerest thanks for the excellent professional care which was ex-tended to my dear wife over the past 18 month or so. I note that almost universally the staff expressed genuine concern and affection for her. As her constant compan-ion, I had the opportunity to at first console her when she was being changed and washed when she was in pain with arthritis to at times actually helping and participat-ing in her care. Since I was caring for her for 2 ½ years before she was admitted I had some experience with the procedures and she felt secure when I was present.
I have had occasion to have visited 5 different nursing homes where my father, sister, mother-in-law, and friends were patients, and none held a candle to the pro-fessional conduct of the entire staff and the cleanliness standards which are found at Fairview.
There were very few instances where I thought some im-provement might have been made, but then I don’t have the experience or background to understand all the un-tended consequences which might arise to negate the pos-sible changes required to correct the perceived deficien-cies.
In summary I commend you for running a first-class in-stitution.
Robert A. Rubega PhD
