What’s the
Point?
![Page 2: Poetry as art](https://reader034.vdocuments.site/reader034/viewer/2022052602/55a199851a28abe3748b46a1/html5/thumbnails/2.jpg)
Please take out a piece of paper.

Silently, please consider what the
following images have in common.
At the end of the sequence, please write
down your thoughts (try not to peek at other people’s ideas)

End of sequence..
![Page 17: Poetry as art](https://reader034.vdocuments.site/reader034/viewer/2022052602/55a199851a28abe3748b46a1/html5/thumbnails/17.jpg)
Now, in your quad, discuss quietly what
the images have in common.
![Page 18: Poetry as art](https://reader034.vdocuments.site/reader034/viewer/2022052602/55a199851a28abe3748b46a1/html5/thumbnails/18.jpg)
Ideas?
![Page 19: Poetry as art](https://reader034.vdocuments.site/reader034/viewer/2022052602/55a199851a28abe3748b46a1/html5/thumbnails/19.jpg)
Ideas
![Page 20: Poetry as art](https://reader034.vdocuments.site/reader034/viewer/2022052602/55a199851a28abe3748b46a1/html5/thumbnails/20.jpg)
What does fine art mean?
![Page 21: Poetry as art](https://reader034.vdocuments.site/reader034/viewer/2022052602/55a199851a28abe3748b46a1/html5/thumbnails/21.jpg)
Historically, the five greater fine arts were
painting, sculpture, architecture, music
and poetry, with minor arts including
drama and dancing.
![Page 22: Poetry as art](https://reader034.vdocuments.site/reader034/viewer/2022052602/55a199851a28abe3748b46a1/html5/thumbnails/22.jpg)
Today, the fine arts commonly include the
visual art and performing art forms, such as
painting, sculpture, collage/assemblage,
installation, calligraphy, music, dance,
theatre, architecture, film, photography,
conceptual art, and printmaking. However, in
some institutes of learning or in museums fine
art, and frequently the term fine arts (pl.) as
well, are associated exclusively with visual art
forms. * wikipedia

How does it differ from popular
art?
Just keep this question in the back of your
mind…
![Page 24: Poetry as art](https://reader034.vdocuments.site/reader034/viewer/2022052602/55a199851a28abe3748b46a1/html5/thumbnails/24.jpg)
What are some purposes of
art?
Ideas:
![Page 25: Poetry as art](https://reader034.vdocuments.site/reader034/viewer/2022052602/55a199851a28abe3748b46a1/html5/thumbnails/25.jpg)
Mrs. Albright’s sleepy ideas…
To connect people
To crystallize ideas in order to share them with others
To represent a driving force within an individual (or group?) such as an emotion or idea
To transcend time
To create metaphors that may become symbols
![Page 26: Poetry as art](https://reader034.vdocuments.site/reader034/viewer/2022052602/55a199851a28abe3748b46a1/html5/thumbnails/26.jpg)
Purposes of art
To connect people with what is present in
their lives while showing a continuity of
that idea
To entertain; to hold attention
![Page 27: Poetry as art](https://reader034.vdocuments.site/reader034/viewer/2022052602/55a199851a28abe3748b46a1/html5/thumbnails/27.jpg)
Other ideas?
![Page 28: Poetry as art](https://reader034.vdocuments.site/reader034/viewer/2022052602/55a199851a28abe3748b46a1/html5/thumbnails/28.jpg)
We could slice art – or at least
popular art down the middle
like this…
To divert us from life and its challenges.
(this could be called ―escapist‖ )
Or
To help us engage with life and meet its
challenges in creative ways. (This could be
called interpretive)
![Page 29: Poetry as art](https://reader034.vdocuments.site/reader034/viewer/2022052602/55a199851a28abe3748b46a1/html5/thumbnails/29.jpg)
Poetry as art…
One of les belles lettres…
![Page 30: Poetry as art](https://reader034.vdocuments.site/reader034/viewer/2022052602/55a199851a28abe3748b46a1/html5/thumbnails/30.jpg)
Les Belles Lettres
Literally, belles-lettres is a French
phrase meaning "beautiful" or "fine"
writing. In this sense, therefore, it
includes all literary works —
especially fiction, poetry, drama, or
essays — valued for their aesthetic
qualities and originality of style and
tone.
![Page 31: Poetry as art](https://reader034.vdocuments.site/reader034/viewer/2022052602/55a199851a28abe3748b46a1/html5/thumbnails/31.jpg)
Let’s take an example of
poetry…
![Page 32: Poetry as art](https://reader034.vdocuments.site/reader034/viewer/2022052602/55a199851a28abe3748b46a1/html5/thumbnails/32.jpg)
And see what it offered one
listener
The Mary Ellen Carter…

How does the gentleman’s
experience relate to the
song?
![Page 35: Poetry as art](https://reader034.vdocuments.site/reader034/viewer/2022052602/55a199851a28abe3748b46a1/html5/thumbnails/35.jpg)
How to eat a poem…
Eve Merriam says:
―Swallow it whole‖
![Page 36: Poetry as art](https://reader034.vdocuments.site/reader034/viewer/2022052602/55a199851a28abe3748b46a1/html5/thumbnails/36.jpg)
Perhaps…
But chewing is a good idea…
![Page 37: Poetry as art](https://reader034.vdocuments.site/reader034/viewer/2022052602/55a199851a28abe3748b46a1/html5/thumbnails/37.jpg)
Let’s think of chewing as analysis…the
second highest level of thinking on
Bloom’s Taxonomy…
(More about Mr. Bloom another time)
![Page 38: Poetry as art](https://reader034.vdocuments.site/reader034/viewer/2022052602/55a199851a28abe3748b46a1/html5/thumbnails/38.jpg)
Jargon, nomenclature etc.
It will help our understanding of a poem if
we understand all the words
![Page 39: Poetry as art](https://reader034.vdocuments.site/reader034/viewer/2022052602/55a199851a28abe3748b46a1/html5/thumbnails/39.jpg)
Run through T.M.E.C.
Underline all the jargon and words you
have vague or no ideas about
![Page 40: Poetry as art](https://reader034.vdocuments.site/reader034/viewer/2022052602/55a199851a28abe3748b46a1/html5/thumbnails/40.jpg)
Look them up tonight
![Page 41: Poetry as art](https://reader034.vdocuments.site/reader034/viewer/2022052602/55a199851a28abe3748b46a1/html5/thumbnails/41.jpg)
Now – let’s tackle this poem
Or eat it…
Or analyze it…
or… (insert your metaphor here)
![Page 42: Poetry as art](https://reader034.vdocuments.site/reader034/viewer/2022052602/55a199851a28abe3748b46a1/html5/thumbnails/42.jpg)
Question(s)
Who is saying what to whom,
under what circumstances, to
what end (why), and how are
they saying it?
![Page 43: Poetry as art](https://reader034.vdocuments.site/reader034/viewer/2022052602/55a199851a28abe3748b46a1/html5/thumbnails/43.jpg)
A thorough analysis results in a
full explication of the work.
Please look this word up tonight
![Page 44: Poetry as art](https://reader034.vdocuments.site/reader034/viewer/2022052602/55a199851a28abe3748b46a1/html5/thumbnails/44.jpg)
Who is saying what to whom
etc…
Well, let’s start by jotting down your initial
impressions of the song…
![Page 45: Poetry as art](https://reader034.vdocuments.site/reader034/viewer/2022052602/55a199851a28abe3748b46a1/html5/thumbnails/45.jpg)
And then think about the speaker…
Who is he?
![Page 46: Poetry as art](https://reader034.vdocuments.site/reader034/viewer/2022052602/55a199851a28abe3748b46a1/html5/thumbnails/46.jpg)
Who is he talking to?
![Page 47: Poetry as art](https://reader034.vdocuments.site/reader034/viewer/2022052602/55a199851a28abe3748b46a1/html5/thumbnails/47.jpg)
And under what conditions?
![Page 48: Poetry as art](https://reader034.vdocuments.site/reader034/viewer/2022052602/55a199851a28abe3748b46a1/html5/thumbnails/48.jpg)
And to what end?
![Page 49: Poetry as art](https://reader034.vdocuments.site/reader034/viewer/2022052602/55a199851a28abe3748b46a1/html5/thumbnails/49.jpg)
And how does he say it…?
Literary jargon:
1. Author versus speaker
2. Imagery
3. Rhyme scheme
4. Personification
5. Theme
Tomorrow
![Page 50: Poetry as art](https://reader034.vdocuments.site/reader034/viewer/2022052602/55a199851a28abe3748b46a1/html5/thumbnails/50.jpg)
Homework
What is the purpose of the poem?
How does the sailor exemplify the
purpose?
How can you explain this in writing?
![Page 51: Poetry as art](https://reader034.vdocuments.site/reader034/viewer/2022052602/55a199851a28abe3748b46a1/html5/thumbnails/51.jpg)
Write down your initial impressions
