Poems Like This
What kind of heart is it
That cannot feel pain Knowing 12 year old life
Should not just end in vain?
What heart would not be moved
That could witness a man
Knowing he can’t stop bullets
Doing all that he can
To save his young soldier
But despite all his best
Cannot stop the bullets
From ripping his chest
Not an army around
Not a weapon at all
Only concrete and mortar
Pinned like mice on a wall
Like a black and white movie
With a theme of sheer violence
Where you see victims scream
But you only hear silence
Not a savior around
And no way to defend
Who is part of your blood
From a murderous end
Did you stop to imagine
If that father was you
With your son clinging tightly
Not a thing could you do?
Do you think you would pray
To Allah the Most High
Or would you only muster
The strength to ask why

Why your brethren abroad
Who claim hold you so dear
Seem to not pay attention
Or perhaps they can’t hear?
Not until there is crisis
And spilling of blood
Does the world seem to notice
Feelings rise like a flood
We then stir up in protest
And write poems like this
Is it not very clear
That there’s something amiss?
When we fight with each other
And just point and accuse
While our enemies continue
To freely abuse
Our brethren in Quds
In Kashmirs and Sheeshaans
In too many places
In so many lands
There are others like Ramy
Indeed by the score
And until we awaken
There will surely be more
It will take more than sorrow
To change our condition
Until we commit
Ourselves to the mission
The legacy left
By the prophets of old
Including Muhammad
Of whom we are told
Would never abandon
His hurt Muslim brother To leave him alone
