Produced only in exceptional vintage years and intended as the ultimate expression of the Taittinger style, this wine iscomposed entirely of Chardonnay grapes grown in the top vineyards of the prestigious Côte des Blancs. Only the first pressjuice is used. A small proportion (5%) of the blend spends three to four months in new oak barrels, enhancing the intrinsicqualities of the final blend. Prior to disgorgement, the Blanc de Blancs is aged for 10 years on the lees in 13th-century chalkcellars that were once the property of Saint Nicaise abbey.

From the ambition of Marchese Mario Incisa della Rocchetta to plant Bordeaux varieties in Tuscany in the1940s to the arrival of acclaimed consulting oenologist Giacomo Tachis to the introduction of two additional wines to thebrand, Tenuta San Guido has vaulted from success to success.

BORDEAUX IN TUSCANY

Just as the Graves region of Bordeaux is named for its gravelly soil, so Sassicaia is an area of Bolgheri, in coastal Tuscany,named for its many stones. Mario Incisa della Rocchetta had enjoyed the fine wines of Bordeaux as a young man in the1920s and dreamed of planting his own vineyard one day. This plan came to pass after 1930, when he married MarchesaClarice della Gherardesca, whose dowry included the 7,500-acre estate of Tenuta San Guido that her family had owned forcenturies, in the province of Livorno on the western outskirts of Tuscany, near the village of Bolgheri. Mario Incisa noticed asimilarity between this land and the Bordeaux vineyards he was familiar with.

In 1944, Mario Incisa acquired a number of Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc vine cuttings from a vineyard near Pisaand planted them on a sloping hillsideoverlooking the San Guido estate, called Castiglioncello after the small, 11th-centurycastle of the same name, used as a hunting lodge, at the vineyard's upper edge.Intense black fruit aromas and flavors aswell as the vanilla and spice of oak in a full-bodied wine with supple tannins.

In 1994, while looking to expand holdings for Tenuta dell'Ornellaia, Marchese Lodovico Antinori discovered Tenuta di Biserno.Located near Bibbona in Tuscany's Alta Maremma subappellation, Lodovico and his brother Piero, bought the property in2001 and set about reviving this historic estate. The estate is loosely divided into three, 50-acre parcels, Fonit Intarlate, SanGiovanni and Le Vallette which are planted to Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot and Syrah. Decisionsregarding where to plant varietals are based on slope, soil composition, exposure and relative proximity to the coast. HelenaLindberg is the winemaker, Michel Rolland consulting winemaker and Ranieri Orsini is the vineyard manager. Currently, thewines are vinified in a nearby village until the new state-ofthe- art, gravity-flow winery is completed.James Suckling noted in the Wine Spectator in October 2007 - “I find the style of the property's wines already to be afascinating combination of Ornellaia's and Sassicaia's, emphasizing the generosity of the former and the firmness andbackbone of the latter.” The nose is intense with cherries, blueberries, chocolate and spicy oak. On the palate there is a good ripe fruit and spicyflavors supported by silky tannins. Concentrated yet elegant, with a medium to long finish.

35% Cabernet Franc/35%Cabernet Sauvignon/20% Merlot/10% Petit Verdot). The fruit for Il Pino is grown in two vineyardparcels surrounding the estate. The upper area is noted for its Bolgheri conglomerate soil, which is well drained and ideal forgrowing Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. The lower area consists of mainly clay soil ideal for growingMerlot. Grapes were sorted, destemmed and gently crushed. Fermentation took place in stainless steel tanks for three-fourweeks.Malolactic fermentation was divided evenly between French oak barrels and stainless-steel tanks. Sixty-five percent of thewine was aged for 12 months in new and 1-year-old French oak barrels, with the remaining 35 percent aged in stainlesssteeltanks. The wine was aged for six months in bottle prior to release.

Lodovico Antinori, based in Geneva, has been head of Lamson International for the last 25 years, a marketing companyspecializing in developing brands in emerging markets, such as Asia. In the mid 1980s, MLA founded Tenuta dell' Ornellaia,the avant-garde winery located in Bolgheri in the Upper Maremma, producing the world-acclaimed wines, Masseto andPoggio alle Gazze. After the company was sold at the beginning of the 21st century, Lodovico, together with his brother,Piero, decided to establish a new wine project, Tenuta di Biserno, having discovered a new terroir with great potential in theneighboring commune of Bibbona.
