Multimedia-casting   The idea of the article was to create a

space that would make available to all of the faculty an xml document formatted in RSS 2.0, essentially, and a location where

students could use that document's URL to subscribe to that particular course's

Podcast.  And as the technology progressed very fast the simple audio Podcast was quickly summoned to allow for video

capabilities as well as many others. This space still evolves today.

“The world of Podcasting is evolving rapidly.” – O’Toole

Personal Reflection

“Ah Ha!”

I think the use of podcasting in higher education is great. The fact that the educational technology department talked about in this

article really had a terrific idea. The quick, easy use of video and audio

on computers for students is wonderful.

1. The use podcasting to upload lectures online makes it easier for students to either watch classes they missed or go back and re-watch a previous lecture.

2. Expanding the application to iPods makes it easier for students to use.

3. This small feature can really improve the students knowledge and help improve grades! Author: Gregory O'Toole M. A.

The Power of PodcastingIn this article it talks about a Spanish teacher who, instead of having his class take written

notes, decided to use podcasts. Not shortly after his class seemed to come a live and participate

more than they were before.

Podcasting is spreading and becoming popular world wide and is a major hot topic dealing with

Higher Education.

Who is Using Podcasting• 29% of iPod/MP3 owners have downloaded podcasts, totaling more than 6 million people• Males and females are equally likely to download podcasts•Nearly half of 18- to 28-year-olds who own iPods/MP3 players have downloaded podcasts•About 20% of iPod/MP3 owners over the age of 29 have downloaded podcastsSOURCE: PEW INTERNET & AMERICAN LIFE PROJECT, APRIL 2005

“Digital or not, podcasts are still simply audio recordings. They pick up background noise like coughing or the scraping of chairs against the floor.” - Lum

Personal Reflection

“Ah Ha!”1. More men than women are using

podcasting2. Over 6 million people who own iPods

are using podcasting3. When students use podcasting they

become customers for these companies, such as Apple.

Until I read this article I did not realize how many people are actually using Podcasting! I had never even head of it until this class but now I see that is a growing worldwide application and is actually very useful

for the everyday classroom!

Abandoning Cassette TapesPurdue U. Will Podcast Lectures in Almost 50 Courses

Purdue University use to tape all of their lectures and store them in the Library. Now they use podcasts to show their lectures online which allows their students to sit in the comport of their own home and watch a class they missed! Students who visit the site can download individual lectures or subscribe to have a whole semester's lectures transferred to their portable MP3 players.

“The site has had a promising start. At the end of its first week, students had downloaded 533 class sessions” - Read

“PodPage”A “PodPage” is as web page students can go do to

download orientation materials or sign up to receive recordings from the education school's Distinguished

Lecture Series.

There have been many worries that Podcasting will leave out students who cannot afford the devices needed. But Purdue hopes to dodge that potential

problem by making its lectures available as streaming audio files that anyone with a computer

can listen to.

1. The use of podcasting could eventually replace going to class all together!

2. Podcasting saves room in Purdue’s library and in turn the student no longer has to pay for cassette tapes.

3. Podcasting gives students new options and allows them to be involved in class even if they are sick.

I think the idea of replacing cassette taped lectures with the use of podcasting is wonderful. I know that on days when I am sick I always worry about missing the lecture. If I knew that I could get online and get all of the same information I missed, it would take a lot of stress away!! It is a great idea.

In Conclusion…

After taking this class and reading these articles I truly do think that Podcasting is a wonderful new invention. I think here in the near future

we will see it in many classrooms and I’m sure I will be using some form of it when I become a teacher. Just as technology in the classroom is

growing, I believe this will grow too!
