Some Explanations

Last year I said I had a $4500 deficit. Why?

We saved an extra $1100 on the banquet. Got a few more full-fare non-ACM registrations! ACM is tax-exempt in Massachusetts!

It was close!

Page 10: PODC 2004 Business Meeting Mark Tuttle, HP Labs Steering Committee

Main Pitfalls• 132 registrations

51 students 69 full-fare

42 % at student rate! This percentage has been growing in the last

couple years. This is good for PODC but hard for the budget!

More of this in 2004.

Dijkstra Prize proposals

• ACM PODC and EATCS DISC as joint sponsors– DISC will match PODC’s contribution to endowment

– Cash value of prize will double to $2,000

– Advantages:

• Increase visibility in Europe via EATCS

• Increase interest by doubling the cash value

• Dijkstra Prize Lecture– A ceremony awarding the prize followed by…

– A lecture by the recipient(s) on the work and the future of the field (an invited lecture, not required)

Page 17: PODC 2004 Business Meeting Mark Tuttle, HP Labs Steering Committee

Registration fee proposals

• Deep student discounts are no longer practical– Students ratio grown from 1:3 in 2000 to 1:1 in 2004

– 1:3: to discount students $100, charge nonstudents $33

– 1:1: to discount students $100, charge nonstudents $100

• Student ratio uncertainty hamstrings organizers• Proposal: Fix some surcharge like 20%

– Nonstudents pay 120% of actual costs

– Students pay 40% (1:3) to 80% (1:1) depending on ratio

– 2004 fees would have been $291/183 vs $335/130

• Proposal: banquet optional? travel grants?

PODC/SPAA 2005July 17-20

• Main event is collocation with SPAA– Several joint sessions, probably no festival etc…

• Was to be in Santa Fe – Hotel rates turned out to be $150+ not $99

– Available dates were badly restricted by tourism season

• But we’re going to Vegas!

Alexis Park Resort

Page 20: PODC 2004 Business Meeting Mark Tuttle, HP Labs Steering Committee

Alexis Park Resort

• One mile off the strip!

• No casino in hotel!

• Near the university

• Near the airport

• Many restaurants within a short walk

• But it will be hot!

Page 21: PODC 2004 Business Meeting Mark Tuttle, HP Labs Steering Committee

Alexis Park Resort• “… the only reasonable choice in Las Vegas”

- Guy Blelloch, PLDI’97• “I used pretty much all the venues available … the

most satisfactory … arrangement I had was with the Alexis Park. It's a mile off the strip, … and within an easy walk of a half dozen great restaurants.”

-Hal Berghel, UNLV• “…the conference rooms were fine …the best option

…the location could not be better.”-Wolf Bein, UNLV

• Some easily found airline fares for July 2004– Boston $221

– New York $221

– Pittsburgh $198

– Seattle $192

– Atlanta $222

– Toronto $350

– London $1159

– Paris $1116

– Tel Aviv $1107

Page 23: PODC 2004 Business Meeting Mark Tuttle, HP Labs Steering Committee

Alexis Park Resort

• Cheap rooms, expensive food (ACM says “normal”)– Hotel: $79/night

– Registration: perhaps $475 full, $325 student

• From Boston: registration + five nights + airfare:– Saint John: $335 + 5*125 + 404 = $1364

– Las Vegas: $475 + 5*79 + 221 = $1091

• How important is it to keep registration <$400?– Cut food? Cut reception? Cut banquet? Cut proceedings?

Page 24: PODC 2004 Business Meeting Mark Tuttle, HP Labs Steering Committee
