Auditions Notice

Auditions for new members for both the PYSO and PJSO will be heldagain in January 2019 at the Stroudsburg Area Junior High School.Openings are anticipated in the PYSO for high school musicians playingbassoon, horn, trumpet, and percussion in particular. All students inhigh school are eligible to audition. In the PJSO, performing opportunitiesexist for all accomplished young string instrumentalists in elementaryand middle school. Minimum requirements are at least two years ofprivate instruction and strong music reading ability. Auditions, whichlast about ten minutes, will be scheduled by appointment. Students willbe asked to perform a prepared solo piece of their choice, and to sightread appropriate music for their instrument.

Both orchestras rehearse weekly throughout the school year onMonday evenings. They perform four concerts per year as well as otherperformance opportunities. Each year orchestra members also attend aNew York Youth Symphony concert at Carnegie Hall.

Dear Families and Friends,

Welcome to the first concert of the 31st season of the PoconoYouth Orchestra!

We are very pleased to present this group of talented youngmusicians under the new music directorship of Maestro JosephChoi. The students have been working hard and enthusiastically tomaster some challenging music, and they are excited to show offtheir accomplishments.

On behalf of the Board of Directors, I would like to thank you allfor attending, and for your continuing support of the Pocono YouthOrchestra. Support from families and friends comes in manyforms, and the success of the orchestra depends on it.Volunteering to help out at rehearsals and concerts, makingmonetary donations, encouraging your children to practice,transporting them to rehearsal each week, saving and turning inWeis Market receipts, and shopping through Amazon Smile are justsome of the many ways that you can all support the orchestra.

Mr. Joseph Choi, Music Director of PoconoYouth Orchestras is originally from SouthKorea and for over 31 years now he has beenliving in the US. Concurrently he is alsoserving as conductor of Loudoun SymphonyYouth Orchestra in Leesburg, VA, serving asOrchestra Director with Grace Academy(Hagerstown, MD), and is currently working on

finishing his DMA (Doctor of Musical Arts) in OrchestralConducting at the Shenandoah Conservatory of Music inWinchester, VA.

Currently he is also Music Director of Calvary UnitedMethodist Church in Mt. Airy, Maryland and Artistic Director &Conductor of the Maryland Chamber Orchestra. In the past, Mr.Choi has conducted Phoenix Symphony (AZ), East TexasSymphony (TX), Astoria Symphony (NYC), Bohuslav MartinuPhilharmonic (Czech Republic), Beethoven Chamber Orchestra(Czech Republic), Scottsdale Symphony (AZ), University ofMaryland Symphony (MD), Hartt Symphony Orchestra (CT), andMaranatha Chamber Orchestra, and served as AssociateConductor of Owensboro Symphony (KY) and AssistantConductor of Evansville Philharmonic Orchestra (IN) andAsheville Symphony (NC). In the past, Maestro Choi also servedas Music Director of Owensboro Symphony Youth Orchestra (KY)and Evansville Philharmonic Youth Orchestra (IN). WithOwensboro Symphony Youth Orchestra, Mr. Choi led manyorchestra tours to Louisville, Indianapolis, and a 10-day eastcoast tour to Pittsburgh, Philadelphia, New York, and theWashington DC area. Mr. Choi also led a 10-day InternationalMusic Tour to Brazil with Highland View Academy “Highlanders”and had over 20 concerts.

In October 2015, Mr. Choi made his Conducting Debut at theCarnegie Hall Concert Hall conducting to a nearly sold-outconcert. In 2003, Mr. Choi made his conducting debut at theKennedy Center Concert Hall where his performance with PrinceGeorge’s All-County High School Orchestra performance wasbroadcast to Prince George’s County (MD) residents for severalmonths after the performance. In the past, Mr. Choi has alsoparticipated in many international conducting competitions suchas Pedrotti International Conducting Competition (Italy),Besançon International Conducting Competition (France),Fundação Oriente International Conducting Competition(Semifinalist), and as winner of Macon International ConductingInstitute in Georgia. Due to his winning title, he was invited toattend St. Petersburg (Russia) Conducting Workshop to studywith Yuri Temirkanov and conduct the world famous St.Petersburg “Congress” Orchestra (Russia). Mr. Choi is equallycomfortable with the band and choral world where he continuesto attend US Army Band Conducting workshops annually inWashington DC working with US “Pershing’s Own” Army Band. In2003, he was named one of two finalists with US Army BandConducting Auditions; also that same year, he was named one of7 finalists for the US Air Force Band Conducting Audition.

In the past, he served as Assistant Conductor and DoctoralGraduate Choral Conducting major at the University of Marylandwhere he conducted University of Maryland Chorus and Choraleon a regular basis. He also sang “Vespers of Confessore” as atenor soloist with University of Maryland Chorus and withAnnapolis Symphony Orchestra. He also served as paid tenorsection member with Baltimore Choral Arts & BaltimoreSymphony Chorus for the Beethoven Symphony No. 9performance with the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra, and asTenor Section member with CONCORA (Professional Chorus inCT) at the Bard Festival and with American Symphony Orchestrain NYC. Along with his wife Angela, and their son Nathaniel, heresides in Falling Waters, West Virginia.

POCONO YOUTH ORCHESTRASErica Peel, Soloist

Erica Peel (Piccoloist of thePhiladelphia Orchestra) enjoys an excitingcareer as an orchestral player, chambermusician, soloist, composer and teacher.A versatile flutist and piccoloist, she ispraised for her effortless and authenticperformances.

Erica began her orchestral career as Principal Flute of theDebut Orchestra in Los Angeles at the age of 21. She went on tohold positions with the Honolulu Symphony, Omaha Symphony,and the San Diego Symphony and has been seen in performanceswith the Los Angeles Philharmonic, Chicago Symphony, andHouston Symphony.

Erica has been a soloist with the Omaha Symphonyperforming the Vivaldi Piccolo Concerto in C Major and has beena first place prizewinner in several competitions including theNational Flute Association's Orchestral Audition Competition, theFlorida Flute Association’s Young Artist competition, and theFlute Society of Kentucky's Young Artist Competition. She hasbeen invited to perform and judge at the National FluteAssociation’s Annual Conventions in 2009, 2010, 2011, 2013 &2016. As a chamber musician, Erica has performed for theOmaha Chamber Music Society, the Philadelphia Chamber MusicSociety, and Art of Elan.

As a Guest Artist, Erica has held recitals and masterclasses inNew York, New Jersey, California, Texas, Iowa, Nebraska,Wisconsin, Missouri, Illinois, Michigan, Tennessee, Florida, SouthCarolina, North Carolina, Virginia and Pennsylvania. She wasalso the featured artist and cover girl for the leading flutemagazine Flute Talk (Jan 2018), as well as the online flutemagazine The Flute View (Oct 2017).

Celebrated for her fearless and innovative approach to musicmaking, Erica has found a truly unique voice outside of theclassical world. As a founding member and composer of theinternationally recognized pop-fusion flute duo In Sterio, Ericadiscovered a passion for composition that draws influences fromrock, folk, funk, latin, world, electro and jazz styles. Performingin these genres, and with audio-visual elements, she has gaineda sense of freedom in her playing that has lead her to produceconcerts for thousands of people across the country. Although nolonger active, In Sterio released two albums of her works,“Frequency” and “Awake” (CD/DVD), available on iTunes andCDbaby.

Erica’s primary studies have been with Jill Felber (ZAWA!),Christine Nield-Capote at the University of Miami, and MaryAnnArcher, formerly of the Metropolitan Opera Orchestra. Ericaperforms on a Muramastu flute with McKenna headjoint and aHammig piccolo with a Mancke headjoint. She lives inHaddonfield, NJ with her husband, oboist Jason Sudduth, andtheir 7 year old daughter, Avery.

The Music Study Club of Stroudsburg offers two scholarships annually through theSuzanne E. Anderson Scholarship Fund. A college scholarship in the amount of $1000is available to graduating seniors planning to major or minor in music with a focus in

the following areas of music: education, musical theater, music therapy, music business,and/or performance. A summer music camp scholarship in the amount of $300 is also

available to students ages 14-18.

Both scholarships are available to students who live in or study with a private music instructor in Monroe County.

Please contact your teacher or the chairperson of these scholarships (Jenny Collins,[email protected]) for more information and applications. All application materials are

due March 1 of each year. We look forward to hearing from you!
