2. Introduction

The purpose of the PoCoG Concept Development Workshop (CDW) for Nurses and Social Workers was to bring together nursing and social work clinicians who are interested in psychosocial research in the cancer care setting.

Concept development workshops are a significant part of PoCoG’s efforts to foster the development of large-scale, multi-centre psycho-oncology studies of clinical relevance and importance and to educate and mentor early career researchers in the development of research projects.

The workshop aimed to address the problems nurses and social workers face when trying to develop and conduct research in the clinical setting and to provide the participants with a basic understanding of research project planning, design and administration.

3. Development of the workshop

The idea of the workshop was brought before the PoCoG Executive Committee in March 2010 by Professor Kate White who advocated for educational opportunities for cancer nursing professionals. It was decided that PoCoG would organise a concept development workshop aimed at nursing and social work clinicians who typically have little research training or experience and that the program content would have to be adjusted accordingly.

3.1. Establishment of the working group/faculty PoCoG Executive Office approached experienced nursing and social work researcher-clinicians to form a working group and act as workshop faculty. Members of the working group were (discipline/function indicated in parentheses):

Professor Kate White (Nursing)

Ms Kim Hobbs (Social Work)

Professor Patsy Yates (Nursing)

Dr Carrie Lethborg (Social Work)

Dr Melanie Price (Ex officio)

Ms Monika Dzidowska (Ex officio)

The working group was later joined by two additional faculty members:

Dr Rosalie Pockett (Social Work)

Dr Mary Ryan (Nursing)

3.2. Call for Expressions of Interest and selection process The working group decided to initiate the process of selecting workshop attendees by calling for an expression of interest (EOI). The EOI asked for brief information about the applicant’s professional background and research experience as well as a short overview of their research idea (appendix A). The call for EOI was released on Thursday 1 April 2010 and was distributed to the memberships of PoCoG, Cancer Nurses Society of Australia (CNSA) and Oncology Social Work Australia (OSWA). The call for EOI closed on 23 April 2010. Twenty-six EOIs were received.

The working group selected workshop attendees on the basis of their need for mentoring and their project’s relevance to psycho-oncology. Twenty EOIs were successful and further five were shortlisted.

3.3. The workshop program Prior to the workshop successful applicants were asked provide feedback regarding the expected outcomes for the workshop. Based on this feedback it was decided that the main aim of the working sessions of the CDW would be to refine the participants’ research question. Since the submitted research concepts were in different stages of development it was decided that each of the small groups would have a different focus to enable the participants to choose the level at which they would like to work. The following groups were proposed for self-selection:

Refining the research question – for a developed idea with a pre-formulated research question (developed aim which includes at least some of the following: problem, population, intervention, comparison, outcome)

Developing the research question – for a basic research idea/concept with no formulated research question

Focus on developing methodology – qualitative vs. quantitative research methodology (suitable for a concept with a pre-formulated research question)

The workshop program consisted of a morning and afternoon session. The morning session comprised of presentations from the workshop faculty about developing a research project as well as career development issues of clinician-researchers (detailed program contained in appendix B). The afternoon session focused on practical aspects of developing the participants’ research ideas.

The small group discussion work was conducted in 5 small discussion groups to which participants self-selected as described above. The faculty and the participants worked together on refining the research questions and benefited from each others’ clinical and research experience. The majority of the participants made substantial progress in developing their research idea.

4. Summary of outcomes

Of the 20 successful and 5 shortlisted candidates 17 attended the workshop. Two-thirds of the attendees were Social Work professionals and one-third was Nursing professionals. They represented a wide spectrum of both professional and research experience.

The workshop’s two main outcomes were:

· Successfully providing the opportunity for Social Work and Nursing clinicians to access expert advice, practical tips and mentoring in developing a research idea and conducting research in the clinical setting

· Successfully providing a networking opportunity for Social Work and Nursing clinicians who are interested in research

One member of the faculty commented that “the small group nature of the afternoon (after the morning set the tone of the day - i.e. that the presenters had all experienced practice issues, the sharp learning curve and were 'just like them' in the early days of their research career) was of great benefit. It allowed participants to toss around aspects of their practice that they could investigate with enough time. It was a real joy to participate in this section of the day in particular. Our group all left stating how excited they felt and happy that they could envisage completing a project - for the first time”.

4.1. Workshop evaluation An electronic evaluation questionnaire was sent to all registered workshop participants. Of the 17 who attended the workshop 14 completed the questionnaire. Five participants reported hearing about the workshop thought the PoCoG mailout and three though the OSWA mailout. Five reported having the message forwarded to them by their manager or colleague.

All the participants expressed a high level of overall satisfaction with the workshop, with 100% participants strongly agreeing that the workshop was a good use of their time. This result was supported by the very positive comments offered by the participants. Specifically, they valued the opportunity to network with like-minded people, opportunity to access research expertise from faculty

members who appreciated the participants’ situation as a clinician and being able to work on their own research ideas in a non-threatening environment. The participants felt supported and welcomed by both the workshop faculty and PoCoG staff.

The participants were also asked to rate the workshop sessions in terms of their relevance, enjoyment and usefulness of content, the presenter and the resources they presented, by indicating how strongly they agreed with each of the statements. The four morning presentations as well as the small group discussion sessions were very highly valued with 81% or more participants marking “strongly agree to all aspects of the sessions rated by the survey. There was a slight preference for the more clinically oriented sessions and for those more directly relevant to Social Work, a reflection of a higher proportionof Social Work participants. The lowest scoring aspect of the small discussion group sessions was the sufficiency of time allocated to them (1 3/4hrs).

The two most prominent areas of criticism from the participants were the time constrains and a lack of a clear, planned follow-up. Participants felt that more time should have been allocated to the workshop overall but especially to the small discussion group sessions in order to obtain more help with their concepts. The participants also commented that they would have liked a follow-up workshop in order to continue working on their concepts.

5. Next steps

PoCoG has taken steps to continue working with Social Work clinicians on developing research projects and support networks:

· PoCoG has called for expressions of interest from the workshop attendees to participate in a possible audit study of Oncology Social Work practice and is in the process of preparing a literature review

· PoCoG plans to initiate a Social Work forum discussion group on the PoCoG website

Although, due to budgetary constraints, there are at present no plans to conduct a follow-up workshop specifically targeting nurses and social workers, PoCoG conducts regular Concept Development Workshops and will in the future explore ways of increasing participation from these professional groups.

6. Acknowledgements

PoCoG would like to thank the working group and faculty members for their enthusiastic work on developing and presenting the workshop: Prof. Kate White, Ms Kim Hobbs, Prof. Patsy Yates, Dr Carrie Lethborg, and Dr Mary Ryan.
