This year Poble Espanyol is celebrating its 90th anniversary. Come celebrate it with us!

Located in Montjuïc, Barcelona’s main green lung, and within walking distance of the Magic Fountain and other emblematic cultural facilities, Poble Espanyol is one of the city’s major tourist attractions.

The enclosure was built in 1929 for the International Exhibition of Barcelona. It was designed by the renowned Catalan architect Puig i Cadafalch and carried out by the architects Francesc Folguera and Ramon Reventós, with participation from the art critic Miquel Utrillo and the painter Xavier Nogués. Its objective was to represent the essence of the culture of the peoples of Spain in a single space, including a synthesis of popular architecture and the typical craftsmanship of the country.

Over time, Poble Espanyol has incorporated other manifestations of culture such as contemporary art, with the Fran Daurel Museum, the Sculpture Garden and the Guinovart Space. It has also been modernised with the new Feeling Spain spaces and the Fiesta multimedia installation, where visitors will experience first-hand some of the most representative celebrations in Spain.

We propose a unique trip during which you will have the opportunity to carry out an educational activity and combine it with leisure time to enjoy your stay in Barcelona.

Gastronomic workshops to learn about the country’s typical recipes, craft workshops to create a personalised piece, guided and dramatised tours, are some of the things we have prepared for you to celebrate Poble Espanyol’s 90th anniversary with us.

On the occasion of the inauguration of the new ceramic kiln, we propose a ceramic painting workshop where you will learn the dry brush technique.

The potters will demonstrate their craft, show you how the lathe works and how a ceramic piece is created. Afterwards, you can choose a piece (already fired) to

paint and decorate using the dry brush technique. This technique allows to combine different layers and colours to create several textures as a relief.

The pieces will measure between 12 and 15 cm and you can take it home with you the same day.

We propose a manual skill activity where you will combine materials of animal and plant origin. In particular, you will work with different leather threads to create a key ring and the cotton thread will serve as its closure.

A facilitator will explain and show you two different braiding techniques. You will make the different braids combining them with originality until you get a long

braid that closes on itself. Then you will practice making the braid closure with the help of a 100% natural cotton thread and then you will add the metal ring to hang the keys on.

Once the activity is over, we invite you to discover the craft workshops that are located in the enclosure which you can visit for free.

Barcelona is known for being a modernist city with many buildings decorated with stained glass windows. Casa Batlló, the Sagrada Familia and Park Güell are examples of this architectural style.

We propose a workshop to bring out the artist in you, let your imagination fly and create a painted glass piece. You will design a drawing by hand, then you will transfer

the design to the piece of glass and, with several special paintings, you will colour the piece, playing with the different luminosities and textures of this old and decorative material.

After the workshop you can visit the glass collection in the Fran Daurel Museum.

You will choose different dyes, some with letters, others with numbers to personalise the bracelet, you can engrave your name on it, another person’s if you prefer

to give someone a present, or your favourite number... there are endless possibilities!

You will finish the workshop by experimenting with the sewing technique and you will sew using a leather thread to decorate the bracelet. And then... it’s time to show off your bacelet!

Hot enamel is a technique used in jewellery to give colour and texture to rings, pendants, bracelets and all kinds of metal accessories made from gold, silver and copper.

It is glass powder that is placed on metal, combining different colours, recreating drawings, creating shapes, etc. When the design is ready, the piece is baked through a cooking process that varies depending on the metal, the glazes and the size of the piece, to melt

and stick to the piece that is vitrifying.

You should have a think about what design to make on a square copper base. You can combine different glazes and even draw. Afterwards, the pieces will be baked for 5 minutes and allowed to cool. Finally, you will polish them and you will pass the thread as a pendant ... and then it is ready!

One of the pillars of the Poble Espanyol is contemporary art, thanks to the Fran Daurel Museum, the Guinovart Space and the Sculpture Garden, located within the enclosure and that include more than 300 works of art by artists from very diverse disciplines. Specifically, the Sculptural Garden offers 36 sculptures by 27 contemporary artists made with different techniques, styles and materials.

Accompanied by a facilitator, you will make a visit to learn the secrets of some of the sculptures, while you will learn to contemplate and interpret them, appreciating their details.

Later, in the workshop, you will make a small sculpture, experiencing the pleasure and the courage needed to express emotions and feelings.

Try chocolate with churros! This is perhaps one of the most traditional breakfast or snack options in Spain. It is a typical combination of Spanish cuisine native to Madrid that emerged at the beginning of the 19th century.

Churros are a flour paste, which is fried and powdered with sugar. The tradition is to bathe them in melted

chocolate, which results in a delicious combination of flavours. That’s why we suggest enjoying a good cup of hot chocolate with churros, before or after your visit and/or activity at Poble Espanyol... Because food is also culture!
