Victorian Premiers’ Reading Challenge The Victorian Premiers’ Reading Challenge is now open and California Gully Primary School is excited to be par ticipating. The Challenge is open to all Victorian children from birth to Year 10 in recognition of the importance of reading for literacy development. It is not a competition; but a personal challenge for children to read a set number of books by 6 September 2019. Children from Prep to Year 2 are encouraged to read or ‘experience’ 30 books with their parents and teachers. Children from Year 3 to Year 10 are challenged to read 15 books. All children who meet the Challenge will receive a certificate of achievement signed by the Victorian Premier and former Premiers. To read the Premier’s letter to parents, view the booklists and for more information about the Victorian Premiers’ Reading Challenge, visit: www.education.vic.gov.au/prc

1. READ ALOUD WITH PASSION! When a child is read to by a loved adult, they are hearing the rhythm and flow of the language, building a rich and diverse network of words and seeing a love of reading modelled.

2. KEEP BUYING BOOKS Continue to build up a home library full of adored books. School reading material is designed for teaching the school of reading whereas recreational reading is all important.

3. TALK ABOUT BOOK CHOICES Talk with your child about why they have chose books from their school library, the classroom or the bookstore in order to develop an idea of your child’s read-ing interests.

4. READ THE RAINBOW! Embrace any book or series your child is keen to read, while gently encouraging them to expand their reading horizons. A balance reading diet is the healthiest by far.

5. BRING BOOKS TO LIFE Research author visits via your local bookstores and libraries. Meeting an author helps for a bond between the child and their favourite books as they gain insight into the ‘story behind the story’. These tips are from Megan Daley’s new book ‘Raising Readers: How to nurture a child’s love of books’ - to be release April 2nd 2019

This past week, in After School Care, we have been quite busy working on new art projects and trying new activities. We started our week by playing with the circus equipment in the shed. All the children tried the different activities and everybody had achieved some success by the time we left. We also made some fruit kebabs, with each child selecting their favourite fruit to put on their kebab, even the oranges which were quite tricky to put on our skewers. One of the particularly pleasing things that has happened this past week, was that all children have played and cooperated well together, whether that was on the oval, on the playground or in our room playing board games. We finished our week by watching a movie and constructing some reading boxes given to us by Miss Ennor. These reading boxes were rather popular and some children took it upon themselves to decorate them with textas, highlighters and glitter paint. Many of the children have also continued their art projects which they started last week. They have been

using cardboard boxes that they have been decorating and turning into dog kennels for our toy dogs, complete with food and water. These kennels are getting bigger and bigger and more impressive and many of the older children have taken it upon themselves to help the

younger children with their kennels.

Have a great week, Josh

GREAT TIPS FOR HEALTHY KIDS TIP 43 FOOD IS NOT A REWARD Most people give lollies or other sweet things to children as a ‘special treat’ or as a reward for being good. But giving kids these things can set up a lifetime of bad health. If kids receive sweets for being good, they will associated good behaviour with sugary and fatty foods, which have poor nutritional value. It can also give them the idea that these types of foods are more desirable than fresh nutritious foods. Kids need to know that there are everyday foods which provide the nutrition they need to grow and develop; and occasional foods which might contain higher levels of sugar and fat.

What you can do NOW Give your kids a hug when they do well. Listen carefully to your kids for ideas for very special treats

e.g. a visit to the aquarium. Plan a special, nutritious meal together to celebrate an event.

Good Idea!

If you want to give kids something as a reward, keep it simple and inexpensive. Examples are: stick-ers, some bits and pieces for craft activities, a small joke book.

Top Tip

Inviting a friend around to play or say the night can be a reward.

HEALTHY

GUIDELINES FOR

KIDS...

Ensure kids have good eating habits by

providing them with a variety of healthy meals and snacks.

Influencing your child’s food selection is

not an easy task, as kids are naturally reluctant to try new foods, that is they

dislike new foods. Be patient; it may take up to 10 exposures before a new food is

accepted by a child, and it is during a child’s development when their palate and tastebuds are most influential.

Kids are grazers and its best that they eat according to

their appetite. Ensure that healthy options are available

for them to snack on such as cut up vegetable sticks or fruit pieces.

Your child has a small stomach with high nutrient

requirements so their foods eaten will vary every meal.

The best help you can offer your kids is

making sure that there is always an

abundance of breads, cereals, vegetables

and fruits available; incorporate lean

meats and dairy foods in their diet;

encourage drinking of plenty of water;

choose low salt foods; and most

importantly follow these

yourself to be a good

role model.

WANT TO GET RID OF YOUR PLASTIC GROCERY BAGS??? Do you have lots of plastic grocery bags taking up valuable storage space in your home? A member of our school community is collecting plastic grocery bags to make sleeping mats for the homeless. If you have excess plastic grocery bags (I’m sure many of us do) they can be brought to the school office for collection to make more sleeping mats. Not only are we providing a soft place for a homeless person to sleep—we are also recycling those unwanted plastic grocery bags!!
