Principal: Mrs M Crelley Issue No: 17 Term: 4 Monday 4th November, 2019

On Friday night, staff and families farewelled Year 12 2019 with a special Graduation Dinner held at the MIA Club. This group of young people have been a wonderful asset to school over the course of the last six years and have always held themselves to the highest standard. This group has left a lasting legacy with staff and fellow students as exceptional young people, genuinely well thought of by all with a very bright future. We will miss them enormously and wish them all the best for the future.

Targeted Programs

Our Compact Leap (Years 9 and 10) and Compact Legends (Years 7 and 8) programs have been a great success for our

participating students exploring many relevant topics and issues to help empower our young ladies to be their best. A Graduation

Ceremony will be held on 25th November to recognise the participation and achievements of our girls. Invitations have been sent

to parents and carers to attend the Graduation Ceremony. A huge thanks to Dana and Ruby from Compact for providing this

unique opportunity for our girls.

Our Links to Learning program continues to strengthen through the great support and expertise offered by our community. The

boys are working with several local businesses and the Leeton Shire Council to learn new skills, taking on responsibilities and the

importance of reliability. Regular updates on our Links to Learning Thursday program are on our Facebook site.

Leeton High School is only the fourth school in NSW to deliver the Hands on Learning program to students who wish to

experience learning in a different context. We have had fantastic feedback from students and our supervising staff and look

forward to really cementing this program in our school, Again, more updates are on our Facebook page regarding these programs.

Schools Spectacular 2019

Our first group of students have departed for Sydney to commence preparing for the 2019 Schools Spectacular. Best wishes to

Skye, Marni, Jordi and Sophie, our Aboriginal Dance Ensemble, and to the entire 40 strong contingent who will perform at Qudos

Arena at the end of the week. Thanks to teachers and parents/carers for the hard work and commitment needed to get to this level

and to all our students for their efforts and preparation. We are looking forward to hearing about this exceptional experience.

Current PBL Focus

Over the course of this fortnight students will be learning about restorative practice and the benefits of restoring relationships for a

productive outcome. Students will also learn about the importance and power of student voice to create a fair and respectful

platform to discuss issues of importance as individuals and groups. Our PBL Prize Draw will take place Friday this week.

Respectful, responsible, learners can put their PBL tickets in for a chance at the prize draw or hand them into the office to

contribute to our merit award system with the ultimate goal of achieving platinum level.

Dangers of Energy Drinks

Students have been reminded that energy drinks such as Mother, Monster and Red Bull are not allowed at school. Energy drinks pose concerning risks for those who consume them. A growing body of scientific evidence shows that energy drinks can have serious health effects, particularly in children, teenagers, and young adults. Large amounts of caffeine may cause serious heart and blood vessel problems such as heart rhythm disturbances and increases in heart rate and blood pressure. Caffeine also may harm children’s still-developing cardiovascular and nervous systems. Excessive energy drink consumption may disrupt teens’ sleep patterns and may be associated with increased risk-taking behaviour. Caffeine use may also be associated with anxiety, sleep problems, digestive problems, and dehydration. Please discuss the consumption of these concerning drinks with your children.

Breakfast Club and Homework Centre @ Leeton High School Breakfast Club is on every Tuesday and Friday morning. Toast and a variety of spreads and fresh fruit is available. A huge thank you to the Golden Apple for supporting us with this great start to the day. Our Homework Centre will run on Tuesday and Thursday afternoons from 3.30pm – 4.30pm in the Library. Teachers will be available to support students with homework, assignments and assessment tasks. Students are welcome to access the internet for educational purposes via the computers in the library. Leeton High School recognises and values the importance of communication between home and school. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to call the school on 69532122. Stay in touch with the happenings at Leeton High School via the School Website http://www.leeton-h.schools.nsw.edu.au/ or our Facebook page - https://www.facebook.com/LeetonHS .

~~ SCHOOL NEWS~~ Extension Science Class Attend SciX Workshop at Sydney University On the 7th November the Science Extension class consisting of Amelie Sachs, Lakaya Flew, and Taylor Moore, travelled to Sydney with Miss Kenton to attend a day long Science Extension Workshop at Sydney University. We spent the day attending lectures at the university talking about the HSC Science Extension course, exploring best scientific practices, experimental design, and research techniques and reviewing statistical analysis of data. We also got the opportunity to talk to current and recently graduated PhD students specialising in certain areas of science about our scientific research project. Highlights of our trip included finding our way around Sydney and making Miss Kenton’s ears bleed with our singing in the car and asking the mentors questions. The trip was amazing, giving all of us a greater insight into what is ahead of us in this course. A big thank you to Miss Kenton for putting up with all of us and giving up her time to take us to this amazing opportunity. By Amelie Sachs

SCHOOL SPEC STUDENTS Best of luck to the 35 students who will be in Sydney this week performing in the 2019 Schools Spectacular. Students learnt about the knowledge, traits and skills they need to possess when in a leadership position, through a range of activities and discussions; including designing an app and presenting their pitch to the other groups and designing and making a costume out of newspaper. Thank you to Mrs Crelley, Mr S Brown, Mr Morschel and Braith for cooking the BBQ, Mrs Camm, Mrs Bailey, Mrs Wilesmith, canteen staff, Ms Seabrook and Mr Killen for their assistance. Also a big thankyou to all the Year 10 students who participated; they should be very proud of themselves for their respectful and responsible behaviour over the 2 days. They were also complimented by the Lake Talbot manager on their exemplary behaviour. Miss Michelle Litchfield Peer Support Coordinator

Women In STEM and Riverina STEM Awards Tuesday 12th November a group of Leeton High students attended a Women in STEM event in Griffith. Students heard from some inspiring female speakers about their careers in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics. Every student was given a free Splat drawing tool and learnt how to use it to draw 3D shapes and objects. The highlight of the event was a live Science show with fun experiments involving skateboards, whistles and dry ice. As part of the day the Riverina STEM Awards were announced. Leeton High School was successful in several categories. Congratulations to the following students for receiving awards for their outstanding Science projects this year; Isabella Franz, Michael Wang, Abbey Snell, Sarah Allen, Jessica Eldridge, Seth McBroom, Shallan Stockton, Adele Thompson, Madeline Sachs and William Gray-Mills.

WIN Program 2020 It’s time for year 9 students to start thinking about work experience in Year 10. During Terms 1 and 2, we offer students the opportunity to participate in work experience 1 day per week for the whole term. This is an excellent opportunity to build workplace skills, develop networks and determine if the industry is a career you would like to pursue.

Work Experience We wish all students involved in Group 1 Work Experience well for their placement. Work hard and enjoy the week.

First Aid Course A First Aid Course will run on Wednesday 11th December. This is a great opportunity to gain a worthwhile and life saving credential. The cost will be $90 which is hugely discounted. This is open to all students. Please come and see us in Careers Central for a permission note. Notes and payment are due back no later than Friday 6th December.

WIN Presentation This year the 2019 WIN Program has been very successful. To celebrate the achievements of our students there will be a presentation at the school assembly on Friday 29th November at 11am in the Multi-Purpose Hall. This will be followed by a morning tea in the school Library for parents and carers, employers, students involved and guests. Invitations were forwarded this week to parents and carers for those students involved in the WIN Program earlier this year. We would be pleased to receive your RSVP by Monday 25th November 2019.
